Pandora One or Last.fm?

First off, apologies if I posted this in the wrong forum. I'm thinking this is the best place to do so, so please forgive my ignorance.

I've been listening to Pandora for a while and I occassionally use Last on my xbox (took it off my iPhone since there's a sub required now) and I was thinking of getting a sub for one of them. Three questions:

1) Is there any way to get a discounted sub for either?

2) If not, which is a better value if I buy a sub? I Pandora seems to play more of what I like, but has seemingly FAR less variety than Last and Pandora seems to repeat an awful lot of the same couple of songs.

3) Any recommended stations for new rock on Pandora? I haven't heard anything really new in I don't know how long.

1. So far, none of us know of discounts. I do know with Pandora you HAVE to shell $36 upfront for a year. With Last.fm, the minimum to pay is $3 and you can decide not to pay next month, no automatic billing. I'm sure you knew that of course.

2. This is a matter of opinion and experience. I have spent time with both and I pick Last.fm. It's easy and I can always mix and match station. I listen to Uplifting Trance and Trance stations regularly, so I know how it works. Last.fm tends to change up its order due to the number of songs being uploaded, the tags and the constant updating (check the forums). I can't speak for Pandora because I dont' know what their progress is.
Bottom line: If there is a song in Pandora, IT IS in Last.fm. So I pick Last.fm

3)I used to listen to rock long ago (so dont' take my suggestions heavily) but if you want to try some new rock listen to Industrial Rock and Metal (NOT Heavy Metal), and Pop Rock.

You're welcome =)

MOD: Feel free to move this discussion as needed. Don't bash me for helping the guy though haha.

Thanks for the reply.

I was kinda hoping that since you can buy Pandora One subs for others that there might be a way to get a discount on them.

I'm into all kinds of metal and rock so I have similar stations on my lists now but again. Not really finding a whole lot of new stuff there.

I used to subscribe to Sirius before they merged with XM (huge mistake) and was able to get my new rock fix through them. Their sub rates are outrageous by today's standards though so I have no intention of going back.

I'm still on the fence as to who is going to get my sub. Neither one has won me over as they both have kinda annoying issues. Anyone else care to chime in?

I'm a Pandora One subscriber. Have been for about 2 years now. I can't see myself ever getting rid of it. I can't say I have much of an issue with repeating songs, but that's likely because I have something like 15 custom stations that I've created, and I've just got them all linked into the Quickmix, so I get a huge variety. I subscribed because I have it playing pretty much constantly every day, so I needed to pay up. I probably listen to a good 300-400 hours per month.

I HATE the Last.FM UI. I don't know why. I just hated it from the start. I use it off and on, on my Xbox 360, but not often. I just don't really like the way it does things. But I think a lot of that is personal preference.

One thing I really like about Pandora One, that I don't know if Last.FM has, is the desktop player. It's a little Adobe Air powered app that runs separately. It's nice not needing to keep a browser open to listen to music.

Another indirect rock genre could be Experimental (I believe that'swhat its called.)

No problem. Good luck in finding new tastes. I'm the same way with trance now, I try to find all genres of trance.

Also, don't be afraid of trying out Slacker Radio, which they had a major overhaul in the premium subscription. They've really stepped up their radio recently.

And Grooveshark, which is on demand music plus they have a radio (not as good as Last.fm's though, in my opinion). The subscription is about $90 per year (yikes!) but if you go to their store and buy a Panda T-shirt (t shirt + shipping= about $26) you'll get a one a year subscription of Grooveshark Anywhere, which is the highest subscription. Yeah, it doesnt make sense but that's how Grooveshark rolls, ha

Hope I help. PS. Just experimenting here, try and see if Pandora/last.fm has Trance Rock. haha, that would be interesting.

I dunno if they have it on iphone but I use grooveshark on my android. I think it's like 9 a month with the ability to make play lists and skip as many songs as you want.
No grooveshark that I can find but there is a slacker radio app. This may be far more fruitful than I had anticipated. :)
Just looked it up Apple won't approve their app for some reason. Sucks for iphone users.

That is very disappointing to hear. More music stations is more variety. I listen to music 8 hours a day at work so I CRAVE new music whenever I can get it. I have listened to the new Foo Fighters CD 35 times according to my iTunes. I wish the new Seether was better-haven't even made it all the way through it yet. Hoping the Egypt Central album coming is as good as the first one.

You have to download Grooveshark straight from their website as they no longer have it in the Android Market. You need Grooveshark Anywhere to use it ($26 per year, if you buy the Panda T shirt).

Another on demand service would be MOG. They are pretty neat but not the best. They are up there though. Last time I checked, you can get a week free trial with them, no credit card needed.
