Paying 'too much' for shipping on ebay

It is very easy to break down shipping costs. We can classify them so lets do it.
Everything is described is talking about Movies, games, Cd's, and books.

Type 1. BIN 99 cents. Shipping 8 bucks and up. These people paid close to retail for this item and they are trying to make as much as possible off the item. They think they can get people who see the 99 cent price tag Buy it now and then deal with the shipping cost after buying it.

Type 2. Honest to goodness people like us selling our games. Auctions start at a one dollar and shipping at max is $5. I charge 2.25 for first class and 4.35 for priority mail both shipped with DC

Type 3. Power seller BIN for $9.99 and shipping is $5-$7.50. Which usually kills the deal.

Type 4. Bootlegger from Asia somewhere. Selling item at half of retail price and shipping is $9 bucks to USA via airmail. GBA carts are notorious of this.

Type 5. Either cheap auction starting price .01 or BIN for 99. cents. Then they have a shipping calculator that has the weight of the item set at 25lbs. so you get a price of 18 bucks and up to ship an item.

Congrats ebay. I really don't think it's the seller's fault. I blame ebay when you pick the shipping options when listing an item it should have more drop down menus asking what the item is and what shipping options. That way the buyer pays the true shipping price. That would IMO get rid of the Type 1,3,4, and 5.
If you don't want your items selling for fifty cents, man up, set a reserve and pay the fee.

And you're berating us for whining over a dollar or two?

Cheapskate.
Ha, that paints a new picture of this thread.

I envision a buyer and seller (hypothetically, of course) playing a mighty game of tug-o-war.

"That's MY dollar twenty-five!"

"NO, that's MY dollar twenty-five!"

The absolute funniest part is each accusing the other of being cheapskates (and, despite that I side with the buyers, it's still damned funny).

personally, i don't think it's unreasonable to try and recoup all of one's costs in s&h

while i don't include time or gas, i really have no problem recovering paypal fees and ebay fees

for an expensive game, i usually set s&h at 5.90

for a cheap game, 3.40

really, the only listing s&h things that bother me are those sellers that put absurdly high s&h fees in the hopes of finding ignorant buyers who bid first and read about shipping costs later

I hate when people bitch about shipping. They have someone else do all the work to have the idea show up on their doorstep. For me to ship like one game would be about $3.50. But I put about $3.00 on one game. If they order more then 2 I will make shipping the normal cost.
What drives me nuts is that, after paying $5, and I get media mail (which is the absolute worst of shipping methods)
What's wrong with media mail? I routinely ship (and receive) media mail, and nothing's ever been lost. As my postmaster explained it to me, media mail is basically discounted 1st class..... designed to boost mail-order business.

$1.00 envelope
$2.00 postage
$2.00 for my gasoline

$5.00 is a reasonable rate imho

So you drive one item at a time to your post office that is 30 miles away?

Are you a seller? I hear you often whine in this thread about sellers, but are you? Or are you simply a buyer? Alot of times for me the buyers that whine are the ones who have never sold, therefore know nothing about what goes on. They see to think its a normal transaction like buying bread from the store.

I just sold 9 items the other week. My feedback's around 140, and I suppose I've sold 40 or so items. Am I a 'power seller'? Nope. But do I have experience selling? Yes.

I'd much rather you try to discuss the points and arguments that I've brought up (the part you referring to as my 'whining'), rather than simply attack me. It's pretty uncouth, as well as poor debate technique, to ignore what I'm saying and tell me that I have never sold anything (which isn't true to begin with).
I thought people under the age of 18 weren't even allowed to use eBay.
They aren't. Two of my friends found out a 17 year old student from out school that they don't like had an ebay account, so they created an account for the sole purpose of getting the kid banned. He had to wait until he turned 18 before he could start buying stuff on ebay.
It was a good thing they banned him, because he was being really stupid on ebay. He would bid on cars that he had no intention of buying.
I remember that we were all really hoping he be the top bidder on one of those cars, and have to pay for it.
Can someone please explain to me why we need another one of these threads?
Why don't you just ask Gizmo? He started it.

The shipping price is shipping AND handling. You are paying for their time to send it, package it, and what not. If you don't like the price do not bid. The only time I agree with you is where they are obviously trying to rip you off. Like they will have a.......... game for like $24.99 and then the shipping is another $24.99 now thats annoying. Then they are just hoping you don't check the shipping fees so they get to rip you off... plus ebay doesnt take any of that money, only off the bidded amount.

Personally, we were discussing (although without certain niceties, I'll admit) the legitimacy of including eBay listing fees, final value fees, and PayPal fees into S&H. That discussion did not end in the last board b/c it had been closed. ;)

At any rate, despite any of my pleas for rational discussion, with the exception of troy and a few others, the conversation seems to constantly be jerking back to "IMO it's okay to charge extra, if you don't like it, don't bid," which is completely ignoring anything I've been trying to say. I no longer see the purpose of trying to make an argument if people are going to still make the same points that we've gone over before on page 3 of the last thread.

myke.

Wow, the 5 year old's response.

See, that makes much more sense to me. A rational explanation that isn't "he started it". The reason I was asking is that it seems that every week, there's another one of these threads that ends up devolving into the same name calling, complaining and generally nasty arguments back and forth.

I closed the last one for the reasons I stated, turning into nothing but a flamefest. This one isn't suffering the same fate, so it's still open.

Just keep it civil is all I ask for, people.
