Is it required that my paypal account be upgraded to a "business" account for me to receive payments through Paypal? I'm about to sell my first item on ebay and i am not sure if i have to upgrade my paypal account. Anybody know?

Could someone just explain paypal for me? I do nto understand how people have paypal dollars?

Can you have money directly deposited to your bank account? I read some stuff on their site but still am confused?

BTW sorry to hijack your thread but I figured someone could probably anwser both of our questions without me having to create another thread
 
You do not have to have a business account... Just use a personal account.. Im pretty sure on this cause I dont think I have a buisness but I get money..

To get paypal $$ u must deposite money or sell items.. I do not know how to deposite.. >_
 
This is how it works:

You open a paypal accout and give them your bank info.
When you pay with paypal, it takes the money out of your account.

Thats it in a nutshell

A business account allows you to accecpt credit card payments. There is a 3% fee on all deposits for this.

You only need a business acount if you want to accecpt credit cards. Beware that you will get charged a 3% fee on all money that comes into your business account.

People like to use credit cards, so it is your call.

I have 2 paypal accounts, one that takes credit cards and one that doesnt.

You can transfer money from paypal to your bank anytime you want.
 
So if you do not want to take credit cards they can just pull it out of their bank account and wire it to yours right for free.

Sorry if I seem a little slow it is just a little confusing for me.
 
i think what u have to do to accept money is to register a crdit card on ur paypal account and verify it. to verify the card u have to spot 2 deposits they make into ur account (free money :) ) and enter it in the field where they ask u. dont get too excited though, their both well under a dollar.

Through Paypal can send you an instant transfer from their bank account or send you an eCheck which takes a few days to clear

That's what I hate about having a premire account. Even if the buyer pays with an eCheck or transfer, you still get charged. I can understand them charging a fee for credit card payments but charging for non credit card payments is horrible.

I consider accepting Paypal to be a neccessity of Ebay. I also accept Money Orders because not everyone likes to use Paypal but I would say 90%-95% of my buyers pay with Paypal.

Yes. But let buyers know in advance you do not take credit cards.
 
What makes it difficult is on Ebay, if you click that you accept Paypal when you list your auction, when your auction shows the Paypal logo, it will also have credit card logos which will confuse buyers because it looks like they can pay with a credit card even if you don't accept them

Thats why in the auction and in the shipping and payment section write:

I DO NOT ACCECPT CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS. People will try then you have to reject payment, it is a hassle.

no u dont need a buisness account, u just need a premiere accnt, its what i have and ive been accepting money from it for a while. if u have a credit card registered on paypal make sure u have verified it.

They could have paid with a credit card, or their payment was too high, or you had received their $500 limit for the month.

Open another account. Go to your bank and get a savings account or three. Then give that info to paypal.
 
Thanks for your help everyone. So it seems best to have two paypal accounts like BigNick; one that can accept transfers with no cost and one that can accept credit card payments. Can I open two paypal accounts with the same checking account?

Probably not. It is so easy to open another one, at most banks they are free.
 
Also, this is up to you but I would reccomend to only accept payment from buyers with confirmed addresses. If you ship to a buyer without a confirmed address (to be confirmed, you have to have a credit card on file), Paypal offers you no seller protection.

And also, on EVERY package, use delivery confirmation or some kind of tracking. All a buyer has to do is claim that they never received the merchandise and if you can't provide Paypal with proof that the item was delivered, the money is taken out of your account, no questions asked.

Butter!! If you ship priority a lot, sign up at usps.com and use click and ship, as you get free priority delivery confirmation. I always transfer all money when i get it so paypal can never take money from!
 
I usually ship 1st class (maybe I should start shipping prioirty to get free delivery confirmation) because 1st class costs less so I charge less for shipping which I hope entices the buyer to bid rather than have them not bid because of a higher shipping fee.

I transfer the money the second I get it as well. With all the talks of chargebacks, I don't want to take any chances.

Something else I hate is it takes 3 - 4 days to transfer the money to the bank account yet they can instantly take money out of the bank account

How do i make sure that I only ship to buyers with a confirmed address? Is this why in the main list for items i see other items offering Paypal protection and mine doesn't have it? Is it better to get delivery confirmation, a tracking number, or both? About how much would it cost to ship an average sized item 1st class with delivery confirmation or tracking number? Thanks again.
 
Ok heres the deal if you just buy from ebay don't get the bussiness. If you are as eller it is a must eventhough the 3% sucks but heyits easier to use credit/debit easy cost money. The easier some thing is for you the more it cost. Ex choped fruit in a pop top can 5.00 or fruit fressh from the produce department. .50 But yes paypal is a must on ebay.
 
You can set it to accept only payments from people with confirmed addresses. For me, if I receive a payment for an unconfirmed address, it gives me the option to accept or deny the payment (on cheap items under $10, I'll sometimes accept an unconfirmed address)

Delivery confirmation should be enough.

To mail a DVD based game 1st class costs me $1.52 - $1.75 plus $0.55 for delivery confirmation, and I pay $0.29 for a bubble envelope so my total cost to ship a game is $2.36 - $2.59. I charge $3 for shipping so I don't overcharge on shipping that much.

So i was to set my Paypal account to not accept payments from unconfirmed addresses then would the Paypal protection automatically begin? What exactly is the problem with unconfirmed adresses?
 
In order to be eligible for protection, you just accept confirmed addresses and use tracking or delivery confirmation.

The problem with unconfirmed addresses is they have no credit card on file.

Someone with an unconfirmed address could be using a stolen credit card for example (not that all unconfirmed buyers do that, I'm just using it as an example)

And because of that, if you choose to accept their payments, Paypal doesn't want the responsibility for any fraudlent problems so basically they say if you accept unconfirmed addresses and there's a problem, tough luck, we are reversing the funds.
 
Plus with priority you get free tape and boxes. Go to USPS.com and go to supplies. they ship it all for free to your front door!
 
Are you guys also aware that Delivery Confirmation is only $0.13 on all non priority class items if you do it electronically just the same as the free elctronic priority DC.

Although the section that has the non priority DC is hidden on the site somewhere.
I will try to find it and post the link for everyone.

holy crap!!!.........you can get free packages for your items?!?........why didn't someone tell me this before........i've been wasting money all this time buying boxes and envelopes at the post office?!?......i had no idea the post office would just give you these things for free.......why do they have a store then in the post office that sells packaging items.......i think they are misleading people into thinking you have to purchase these items

oh but wait, i just looked and you can only get free packages for express or priority mail, and i use first class most of the time

here's my question: what would be cheaper, getting a free priority shipping envelope and mailing it priority, or paying for a first-class envelope and mailing it first-class........i usually mail things under one pound
 
Depends on how much you overcharge for shipping.

I work the price on the bubble envelope into my shipping cost so it doesn't make a difference for me.

true, i do the same thing......though sometimes i will take a loss of a couple of cents just to entice the buyer with lower shipping......guess i will continue to purchase my shipping supplies because i want to mail first class, not priority......3-4 dollar shipping for a video game or music cd usually covers most if not all of my shipping expenses
 
If you want to save some money, you can get bubble/padded envelopes off of EBay. I contacted a supplier on the phone and they wanted $0.45 shipped for each envelope (8 1/2" by 12 1/2") and I went on Ebay, and found the same size envelope and bought them for $0.29 each shipped (quantity of 100).

If you don't sell a lot, that may be too many though.

You have to download the USPS Shipping Assistant, just click the link in the little box that says download.
Register( it will ask for a business name but just put something in it), follow the instructions sign in and begin.


Edit: Once you begin filling out the label be sure to click the service tab to change shipping class to whatever class you plan to ship.
 
Don't hate on ALL of the unconfirmed addresseson paypal! I moved over three years ago, got a different bank account with the local bank but still have the same email address...and they REFUSE to confirm my mailing address for Paypal. It will just say "This email address is linked to another account" and be stupid....even my wife's email address didn't get it to work.

This is technically illegal, however [to use a Priority Mail box for anything other than Priority.]
I ordered a bunch of Priority supplies, and usually charge a flat 4 or 5 bucks Priority shipping on ebay [except of course for big, heavy, bulky things]. For Half.com I just got a box of bubblewrap, some kraft paper, and some packing tape. About 20 bucks total, and I've been working on the same supplies for about a year.

yeah i know......i have an unconfirmed address but still am an honest ebay and paypal user.........i think looking at feedback is more important than whether the person is confirmed or not
 
Okay, I am about to ship my first item. What is the best way to ship out a shirt? Bubble wrap wouldn't be necessary right? How would any of you ship out a shirt?

Fold it up put it in a large zip-lock or plastic bag then use a priority flate rate envelope($3.85 no matter what the weight is).

If I upgrade my account to receive credit card payments, will I be charged fees for EVERY payment I receive from then on, including balance transfers?

i dunno if it's illegal, but i know it's frowned upon. i once used a priority sticker (i cut off the part that said priority on it) for a regular package and the postmaster behind the counter said i wasn't allowed to do that. she let me send the package though. :oops:
 
It technically is illegal, if you go through the process of ordering supplies via the USPS website or if read the fine print on the boxes.
Re Paypal: if you are a business or premier account, sending money is still free, but they charge you to receive payments, regardless of how it is paid. The rate begins at 2.9% plus 30 cents, I believe, on any payment you receive [which is reasonable, considering you can now accept credit cards, and it costs a lot more than that to get a credit card machine and merchant account with Visa or MC]. Also there can be charges on getting your money out, depending on how you do it--bank transfer, using Paypal debit card, or sending money from your PP balance isfree; getting a check sent to you costs 1.50, I think.

The last time I sent out a shirt, I took one of the bigger priority envelopes from the post office (I couldn't get it to fit in the flat rate envelope) and since it was under 1 lb, it was $4.30 postage ($3.85 plus delivery confirmation).
