This is bs, I have been a member of Ebay for over 2 years, with no issues to my account. Today I try to purchase a laptop only to be told I cannot pay because I have reached my sending limit and need to verify my bank info or setup a credit card with them!

This is totally bs as they just want to cut out the credit transaction fee they are paying when taking funds from my credit card. I have called paypal customer service only to be told that I must sign-up to buy what I want.

I am ready to have a friend buy me the damn thing at this point, and stop my ebay consumption unless someone knows how I can get this rectified.

UPDATE: Earlier in the day after making this posting and getting frustrated by the fact I would have to open up a "firewall" bank account for paypal(I really don't have the time). I checked out consumerist and found a long list of paypal phone numbers. After calling a lot of them to get disconnects or messages I called one of them and left a message stating what I wanted.

Surprisingly on my way home from work I'm called by an Escalations Executive who is very attentive and listens to my points and then asks for a few minutes to check something; returns to the call and says it has been changed, he even said to call him directly if I have issues in the future! When I asked him if I was correct to think calling the general paypal support line, that they would be unable to adhere to my request he agreed.

At the beginning of this post I was furious, why are you giving me the customer a hard time for spending my money! In the end by doing my research, and speaking to the right people I was able to achieve my goal.

dunno the value of the item but it sounds like they would like to protect the seller just in case you were somehow a flake or from nigeria.
i think its their right to do so and if you dont want to shop with them so be it.

verify your identity, or set up a bank account. At the worst go to a local bank, open a new account and use it strictly for paypal.

otherwise they limit what you can spend and what you can withdrawl a month.

I've searched around the net and what your saying seems like the only option to continue if I want to use their service, but is a bs strategy to me.

It is a hassle nonetheless and it does not help them verify who I am, it instead gives them a way to charge me without them paying a processing fee from credit cards.

You can still use your credit card once you verify your account. Just because your bank account is attached to your Paypal account doesn't mean you have to use it.

Also, you can start a new Paypal account if you use an e-mail address and credit card that wasn't attached to your first account. You can then use the new account without having to verify it until it reaches the sending limit. (I think you can still do this, unless things have changed in the past couple years)

I've heard of horror stories of paypal auto-used peoples bank accounts without asking permission. Also the company that touts themselves as being such a protector of my personal information is digging too deep to prove this verification; snail mail to my house requiring my signature would be acceptable verification to me.

It's not exactly a horror story, lol. I have been verified and used Paypal for years, its not exactly a scam either. Just because you never signed up and gotten yourself properly verified doesnt mean they are trying to screw you over. If it is really that much of an issue, just don't use Paypal or eBay anymore.

Not sure why youre making such a big deal over this of all things. I have had a lot of other eBay/Paypal crap that is 100 times worse than this, and dont see me posting about it. And I have been a member for 5 years. If you are going to use eBay, be ready to get screwed by Paypal sometimes, otherwise don't use the service.

Verifying bank info with them doesn't mean you have to use that bank account to pay from then on. They put 2 small deposits in your account, and you tell them the exact penny amount of those deposits. Then they list your bank account as an option to pay. Usually the default option.

Every time you use Paypal, you can change the payment to take it from your Credit Card instead of your bank account.

I been on paypal since day 1, I remember getting my free $10 for signing up and the referral bonus of $5 for each person I referred.. I have never had a issue with paypal and they have my bank account and creditcard info..
Yes, I've come to the resolution I was hoping for with this issue!
Gratz, now stop trying to create propaganda where there isnt any! But yeah, gratz on working it out. Paypal is normally pretty good at working things out. Not sure why you even needed to get that upset over something so stupid though, which is why most people responded with angry responses. This is not a "scam", more or less just a policy disagreement. It happens.

^very true, but I have been ripped off on ebay with a pair of fake shoes but paypal didn't do anything to mitigate in addition to a few smaller things.
I agree it is a policy disagreement but I was looking at it from the business side of them not needing more info. Then the CSR's were making it like what I wanted was impossible so it felt like I was being scammed.
