Concerned about giving out your credit or debit card number online? Wish you could use PayPal in more places?

The answer is here: Download the new PayPal Virtual Debit Card. It generates a virtual card number every time you shop, everywhere you shop – so you never have to give out your credit or debit card number again!

This could be very useful for a lot of people.

This isn't working for me. I get the following message when I try to download the software:

You have requested an outdated version of PayPal. This error often results from the use of bookmarks. To enter the PayPal website please click on the Welcome tab.
If you are already logged in, please click on the My Account tab to continue.

Anybody else having this problem?

yeah I'm having the same problem.

EDIT: It looks like you have to have a premier account to use it

I have a Premier account and I still get that message.

Yep, my account is premier too, and it is a no go.

I wonder if maybe you need to have a PayPal Credit Card to enroll. I am contemplating testing this, but I have too many credit cards as it is.

You do not need a paypal credit card for this, It should install an applicationa and go. I used to use the Debit Bar all the time, this is a step down for me as the Debit Bar worked just peachy keen on the Macintosh OS. It's not that I can't use this as I have Parallels Desktop and Boot Camp, and I did test it out but I won't use it on the principle that they had a version that worked fine with the Macintosh OS just fine for years and now they have removed functionality. Plus it sits in the damn taskbar all day long asking if you want to pay with everything with this damn virtual number. No thanks. Bring back the plain jane white vanilla debit bar please.

Yeah but that's only for receiving payments not sending a payment or paying for something online and using your account to pay for it
Premier account fees... 3% on everything!
on top of the $0.30.
I don't have a problem with them charging a fee on credit card payments,
but to charge a fee when accepting money from a banking/paypal account?
That is bullshit.
(Why does premier members have to pay a fee when it is free to basic members?!)

Paypal sucks!
(yea..yea... I know there has been a gazillion of these posts, but I want to vent).
PAYPAL SUCKS!
fuck Paypal!
fuck fuck fuck fuck
(that is better)

Which is why i was curious why the payments i started getting from a online survey place have been $5 with no fees at all....

I've not been charged a fee when accepting a payment via bank account. Only when someone pays via credit card. I have had a premier account for many moons.

ahhh.........
Are you sure your paypal account is a Premier Account and not a Personal Account?
I'm pretty sure your one is a Personal account unless there is some sort of glitch.
Anyone else wants to comment on this. Is there some sort of secret I'm not in on?

I have had my Premier account since Jun. 10, 2000 and they have charge a fee on every single transaction.
The only exception is when I get cashback from Fatwallet. There is no fee on that for some reason.

Yes I've had a premier account since 2001, I only get charged transaction fees when receiving money via credit card. There is never a fee for me sending money be it via the virtual debit card(used it 6 times) or other methods. I also have the paypal buyer credit I use sometimes. Never a fee for sending that either. I don't think you get hit with fees when you send money regardless of the method. Only when receiving money via credit card. At least thats how my account has always worked. I also have a business paypal account that functions the same way.

Quote direct from paypal's website. If you are getting transaction fees on everything I suggest you contact paypal ASAP because there is something wrong with your account.

Sending Money - Send Money

Are there any fees associated with sending money?

There are no fees to send money.

They do say there is supposed to be fees when receiving money and yet I looked and I've gotten several payments from a site that have been in full with no transaction fee taken out. Those are the only payments in I have gotten for some time otherwise I've only used it to spend money, I wonder how they are funded if they don't have fees taken out?
Yes I've had a premier account since 2001, I only get charged transaction fees when receiving money via credit card.
I'm pretty sure you're mistaken or you have a happy-time glitch. Premier accounts (I've had one since 2002 I think) get charged fees on everything. Bank transfers, Credit Cards, eChecks. You name it, there's a fee off the top.

ahh...
There is nothing wrong with our paypal accounts.
I hate to break it to you.
BUT
The one who is confused is YOU!
There is a big difference between SENDING money and RECIEVING money.
Paypal doesn't charge you a fee for sending money
(All of us here are well aware of that),
BUT they charge you a fee for recieving money regardless of the source if you have a Premier Account.

If you want to prove us WRONG, then please post a screen shot of your paypal account showing that you have recieved payment and that the fee is ZERO.

I'm not sure why your $5 from the survey (my cashback from fatwallet, not sure what else) are fee-free
BUT, that is just an isolated incident, right?
Are you getting hit with fees on pretty much everything else when receiving payment?

PS:
what resolution are you running on your monitor?
what size is your monitor?
that image you posted is 1,492 pixels wide.
(on top of that I'm guessing you have already truncated the excessive space on the left and right side)

I've gotten more than 1 of those $5 payments and all of them are fee-free
It is just on the survey payments, right?
macdude22's claim that paypal is only charging him a fee when receiving money from credit cards
(not on anything else, ie money from paypal/banking).

First, it was asked if there are any fees in using the virtual debit card. As someone who as used it there is not, then it was stated there are 3% fees on all transactions, also not the case. I never said you didn't get charged a fee for receiving money, in-fact I stated that it seems you should, only stated that I have not been charged fees for receiving money from any sources other than credit card payments. wbc1228 please hone your reading skills before our next encounter. Maybe I have a happytime glitch who knows, but I've gotten a lot of payments fee free. I haven't gotten a payment from a bank account in some time so I can't say if my account gets charged for them or not.

And wbc1228......I was just pushing your buttons about the reading comment. I'm as confused as everyone else. ;)

I never even batted an eye about not getting fees on various payments, but it sure seems like I should be getting hit. Is it possible these organizations have some sort of account that lets people they send money to not get hit with fees? If there is such a thing I haven't found it on paypal's site yet. But it does seem payments from various organizations are not getting hit with fees on users with premier accounts. Which seems to counter to what paypal's documentation indicates.
So does anyone know how to get the Paypal VDC working?
Well I guess you need a bank account attached to the PP account, which for me makes the point of it useless.

I take it sign-ups for the Virtual Debit card are over?

I would've loved to get on this, would've been perfect for the $10 off $10 GCO offer.

Jeah.

Thats the whole reason why I wanted it.

i don't think its over or anything, i signed up today, downloaded the software, and used it at deepdiscount.

I get charged on every penny I recieve too.

I can't get this thing to work. Everytime I click download it just takes me to the account settings page :(. I did it in IE7 aswell so that wasn't the issue.
I downloaded the software now. Looks good
any idea what I may have been doing wrong? I click the download button and it takes me to the account settings page.

Same here

edit: think I found the problem

"- Have a confirmed address on file with your paypal account.

I dont have a confirmed address since I dont have a credit/debit card

grr

Oy, i had an error where they had to manually confirm my address; since the postcard never came. When i look at my address information it says i am confirmed; but on the main page, the "confirm your address" link is still there.

So i try to click on that link, and it asks me for the 6 digit code from the postcard >

I think they had it out for beta but retracted it maybe because of bugs. Thats what it seems like to me anyway when I went about trying to get it.

If the sender uses the mass payment feature of PayPal then the receiver does not pay any fees regardless of their account type.
