My husband built me a new computer for my birthday, and I'm looking for things to play. I'm like 10 years behind on PC gaming, so I've been looking at best of lists online, but not really finding anything that sticks out. I'm looking for games that are PC exclusives or significantly better on PC that I don't already own (or can be bought for super-cheap) for another console. I would have gotten Fallout 3 & Left 4 Dead if I hadn't gotten them for 360 already. (I'm too cheap ass to buy a second copy of L4D :\ ) No MMOs, please.

So far, I've got The Orange Box and The Witcher Enhanced Edition, but other than that, I'm just waiting for StarCraft 2... Warhammer 40k: DoW has also been recommended to me.

Buy him a year's subscription to GameTap for $60. 1000 games, he'll find something.

I also do write-ups for cheap games on my website (sig). You can find a list there. Most of it is on Steam, all under $20.

Steam also has a WH40K bundle for... $60? I think. Comes with everything. Too bad you just missed the Christmas sale, it was $30.

Mass Effect is only $20 now on Steam.

Check GOG.com for $10 and under older games that are guaranteed to run on XP/Vista and are DRM free. Fallout, Fallout 2 and Tactics are $6 a piece. I'd still recommend you get Fallout 3 PC if he enjoys that. The mod community is wonderful. You'll hardly even care about the $10 DLC they're coming out with this month if you experience user mods.

Over winter break I played a lot of Spore and Fallout 3, both great experiences.

I played like 10 min of Witcher and hated it. :\

I think maybe you misread..

Get Civilization IV

It's still expensive ($50 for the complete pack on Steam) but it's digital crack.

Also look into the Peggle series.
I played like 10 min of Witcher and hated it. :\
I'm playing it at the moment because it's newest game I have available (husband got it for free, thankfully). I'm not sure if it's just me, but all the NPCs who talk to me really freak me out with their scary ventriloquist-dummy-like motions, probably more so with all the graphics settings set high. And the sex thing is ridiculous. The Zero Punctuation review of it is totally accurate. I'm still playing it tho, cuz I have nothing else to play...

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I should probably check out Spore. I borrowed Civ4 before, and it was like digital crack, but it was painfully-slow digital crack on my old computer. I'll yoink it from my friend again.

Well like what kind of games do you like?

I have a few suggestions off the cuff:

STALKER: Clear Sky
Company of Heroes
Deus Ex (Oldie, but a goodie)
Crysis (If you have a really powerful PC)

Darthburge just wants you to buy stuff he is already playing. At least you can't go wrong.
Well like what kind of games do you like?
On PC, I've generally liked RPGs (Fallout 1's my favorite game of all time), strategy games (SC, Civ), and FPSs with good single player (HL, NOLF). I'll play whatever tho.

I think I may be able to run Crysis? It's not totally clear to me after reading tech reviews. My computer has an AMD Phenom II X4 940 3Ghz CPU and an ATI Radeon 4870 GPU, if that helps.

lol yes. you can run crysis and run it well.

Suggestions:
F.E.A.R. (good fps, jumpy bits)
Indigo Prophecy (adventure game, sucks at the end but the rest is a good tale)
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (adventure game, much

I'm playing The Witcher right now and I really like it a lot. It is a different type of RPG for sure, small confined levels the main difference from most RPG's. But I have had very few problems with it so far personally.

As for games to play.....Deus Ex should go straight to the top. It is my favorite PC game of all-time barely edging out both Half-Life's. I just can't stress enough how great that game is.

 • Crayon Physics Deluxe
 • World of Goo
 • Peggle Deluxe/Peggle Nights
 • Aquaria
After your post last night, I downloaded demos for World of Goo and Peggle Deluxe off Steam. World of Goo is intriguing; I might get that one. Peggle feels like I'm gambling!

op-

you can run crysis with that rig, but don't take my word for it, d/l the demo
do you literally mean 10 years? because there are some great games like system shock 2 and planescape torment that hold up among countless others
I also recommend oblivion on the pc vs the 360, but download the poop (mega mod) before playing
play portal off the orange box, if you haven't already
king's bounty has fallen under the radar, but I've found it to be quite an addicting strategy game- also galactic civilizations 2

So you know, several of the games in Crystalklear's list are on GameTap and included in the $60 annual subscription :) Civilization IV, Titan Quest, HoMM and Disciples.

They also have a very good selection of adventure games (recently added Syberia; the sequel is hitting this week). Also Myst I - III, URU, Zork games, Sam & Max seasons 1 & 2, American McGee's Grimm, Penumbra, Jack Keane.

Even games other people have mentioned like Deus Ex 1 & 2, Planescape Torment (all Black Isle RPGs, actually - Baldur's Gate 1&2, Icewind Dale 1&2, Fallout 1&2 + Tactics), STALKER, Dawn of War.

I really can't stress enough how great a value the service is.

No, I don't work for them ;)

edit: I should also mention that 1 account can have sub-accounts created under it for other people to use. Up to two people can be logged in at the same time, so if you have two computers, you guys could co-op stuff.

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet or not.

Warhammer Dawn of War is a pretty amazing RTS if your into them.
Standard collect your resources, build your base/army, obliterate the other players but with it's own unique traits. In my opinion, it's the best RTS I have played, a little better than warcraft III :D

Off the RTS love, Left 4 Dead is pretty damn amazing on 360, should be even better on PC seeing as you can access player made levels and content.
