PC Setups (Post yours here!)
Listen peeps, future-proofing is no good. Just get a computer that'll be good for now, and get a new one/upgrade when it gets too out of date. Which'll take a while.

Anyways, I may be 13, but selling stuff here and on Ebay is good for getting Mother's Day Presents. Oh, but after that day, I SHALL start saving to build my own...$500-$600 dollar computer. ;)

I know computers pretty well, and I can take them apart and put them back together.
I disagree with this. If you buy parts that can be upgraded you will be able to stretch your pc out with out spending an arm and a leg for newer parts.

Exactly a nice sturdy case and a very efficient psu can go a long way. I have had case and psu's last three or more upgrades before.

If you go with AMD normally you can upgrade your cpu without getting a new motherboard. Intel typically like coming out with new chip sets so normally you can't count on being able just stick a new cpu in your old board with your old ram.

The people who bought a core I7 cpu for gaming only will not need to upgrade that for a very long time. I believe the only game that really used a quad core was GTA IV. Currently, duel cores work just fine for games.

My current system - with the exception of the graphics card, 1tb drive, and heat sink, it is all close to 4 years old.

Are what I have already, or are in transit to my house.

I still need to pick up a i7-2600k and mobo when the revised designs come out. A blu-ray burner, secondary hdd, GTX 570, and a few extra case fans.

I de-riveted the case and tore it down to paint the internals. I have the inside of the side panels left to paint black, and that is done. Already have it back together. Pretty happy with how it turned out so far, as I have always wanted to paint the bare steel looking internals and back plate.

Pic of slide out mobo tray:
IMAG0050.jpg

And two shots of the case. Like I said, still need to paint the side panel behind everything black. And perhaps the card slot covers blue. Also going to pick up a sleeving kit to sleeve the wire mess from the front panel. The two unpainted drive bays in the bottom are going to be popped out and replaced with fans.

That's my sff setup. My BFG GTX 280 OC2 just died, and now that BFG is no longer around my lifetime warranty is meaningless. Hopefully since I bought it with my AMEX it will be covered under their warranty extension. Currently using my old X800XL ATI card until I get a replacement, probably going to get an EVGA GTX 270 Superclocked.

Also changing to Windows 7 Ultimate soon, I already have it, just need to take the time to do a brand new install.

well it looks like I definitely have the least powerful pc here, but I'm pretty happy with what I got for what I paid for. ( I spent a total of $40 on it. It's technically not my computer but I use it more than anyone else in the house and have access it 95% of the time I am home and awake)

It's a store bought emachine from 2006 I think.
The only specs that I can name are these:

cpu: Pentium 4 3.20 GHz
Ram-2gb
video card-geforce gt 240
hard drive space-140 gb

Monitor- I dunno exactly how big, pretty small. Either 17 or 19 inches. Max resolution is 1280 x 1024.

I said I spent $40 total on it, but that was to split the cost of the graphics card. Besides that cost, I didn't pay anything for it.

I was close to buying a new gaming computer this past January, but that's when I just decided to get the card instead. I only wanted something that would let me play some games that I had already purchased on sale (STALKER, the Witcher, Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines, Titan Quest, episodic Monkey Island). I also now have the opportunity to play a bunch of other games that I wasn't able to before ( I was pretty much limited to pc games released before 2005)

Next year is when I'll make a real upgrade. It's not like I don't have enough games to last a year

The thing kind of grew since I got it. I started with everything but the SSD and the 1TB drive and added them later on. The SSD is just awesome, too.

It glows.

But I built it way back in the summer of 2009, so I'm planning on a nice 2011 build with a Sandy Bridge setup and a 5000 (or potentially 6000) series card. Should cost me around 1300 to 1400, though I am porting over a lot of the stuff from my current build besides the obvious parts. And I've got a few people lined up to buy my current build for $500 to $600, so I should be pretty good.

I'm also possibly going with Antec's Lanboy Air case, which should be very nice. Though I am interested in swinging with a less... noisy build as well.
Nice builds here. I really need to build a new pc
Cool, let us know what are your plans in building one, im sure we have some knowledgable CAGrs here that are willing to offer tips or ideas if you want any.

Good to hear I was going to use one of the builds from the PC build thread but its been awhile since they been updated.

Besides just getting build specs from other CAGrs here. I can recommend two sites that might help you also.

1)Toms hardware they can almost tell you anything you need for abuild on a computer. http://www.tomshardware.com/us/#redir. If u look on the left side on their website they even tell you whats the best gaming cpu to get for 2011 budget wise. [good for must have computer internal parts]

2)if your not sure if your product is good, go to http://www.testfreaks.com/ they rate almost every eletronic product. I usually get my reviews on products before i buy them. besides using newegg and amazon. [good for accessory computer parts like Monitors or speakers.]

Happy hunting.

P.S. Some people build computer specs to the games they play the most. like world of warcraft for an example. No point dishing out extra money to build a comptuer that is over kill if the only game u play is WoW. Others like to play games coming up in the future and build high end gaming ones, and of course, a person can be both.

I guess I'll list mine too. My rig is about 2 years old, I upgraded/added more parts over the years. The most recent upgrades is the cpu cooler and video card. Here is the latest setup...

Found this thread today and thought it would be fun to contribute. I started putting this setup together the day the i5 2500k hit Newegg:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i5 2500k @ stock 3.3GHz
CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ with extra fan for push/pull
Motherboard: Asus P8P67 Pro
RAM: 8gb (4 x 2gb) G.Skill RipJaws DDR3 1600
Case: CoolerMaster CM 690 II Advanced

Keyboard: Ducky 9008 mechanical keyboard with Cherry-MX brown switches
Mouse: Logitech MX518
Sound: A couple of Polk bookshelfs and a Polk PSW10 subwoofer

For a desk I just have a 6-foot utility table with a tablecloth to stop the static, so the wires are a little messy. These pictures aren't the best, I'm using a phone camera:

You know about the Sata port issues on P67 motherboards, right? The Sata II ports will degrade your hard drive over time (only work-around is to use the Sata III ports). Depending on when you ordered your parts, Newegg should've sent you an email regarding an advanced RMA.

Well, my P67 motherboard for the sandy build I am doing will finally be here tomorrow. Tonight I finally got around to sleeving the Power Supply to match the paint job I did on the case internals.

Pic : http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f115/mudshovel98/newcomp1.jpg

I still need to sleeve the control panel wires and put the top back on the case, and sleeve/install the case fans I purchased. Motherboard should be here tomorrow, and I have the ram and SSD ready to go. Leaves me with the 2600k processor, graphics card (leaning towards a GTX560 ti to overclock) blu-ray drive/burner, CPU cooler, and a monitor yet to purchase.

The long delay in being able to get a revised board did get me to spend some time and money updating a few components in my 4-year-old gaming rig (which will be passed on to the wife when I get the new up and going). Bought 4GB of used ram from Shrike and another set to match to bring it up to 8GB. Ditched the old nasty rats nest PSU and got a shiny new modular one. Threw in a 64GB SSD to run windows/programs off of. Replaced all the fans in the case; 4 years of being on nonstop took its toll on the old fans. Overclocked the old 2.4ghz e6600 to 3.2 and its been stable for weeks now. So its all pretty snappy again, all things considered.

Also what started as a disassemble and deep clean before the components were added ended up being a weekend project to paint the internals, sleeve a few wires, etc. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

Didn't have the used ram in when the pic was taken (its all blue now), and added a PCI USB card since 4 ports on the back were not cutting it. Covered up the empty PCI slots with some vented black covers as well.

Man after reading\seeing some of these builds I feel like a cheapass...

Athlon II X4 640Propus 3.0GHZ
Biostar AMD Motherboard A880G+
1TB WD Green Hard Drive (Leftover from another machine)
4GB G.SKILL DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
Cooler Master 341 m-ATX case
Seasonic 520W 80Plus Power Supply S12II 520 BRONZE
Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1 GB DDR5
Monitor - Westinghouse 19 inch LCD TV\monitor combo
(kind of old but nice for hooking up consoles as well)

I built this after getting a really good deal on an M11x laptop (to compliment it) and seeing those great Steam deals over and over. I guess it's somewhat low end compared to some of the builds out there but my single monitor only pushes 1440X900 max so it plays everything really well although Windows 7, 4GB RAM, and the quad core are no slouches. I wouldn't mind getting two really slick monitors for a dual setup but maybe at some later point.

I think after deals, having some parts, and getting the 5770 as a Christmas gift I probably spent around $250 to $300. It's pretty crazy the options you have when building a new machine...in price, parts, etc.

Didn't have the used ram in when the pic was taken (its all blue now), and added a PCI USB card since 4 ports on the back were not cutting it. Covered up the empty PCI slots with some vented black covers as well.
VERY nice. I've got those same Xigmatek fans. They look gorgeous in the dark.

Good golly that's a lot of pRon =P

I've made a few changes to my PC since I last posted.

I added a second EAH5850 for CrossFire and a Noctua NH-D14 for cooling with a Gentle Typhoon (AP-15) and Scythe Kaze Maru 2 (1700rpm) to cool it. I've also overclocked my i7-950 to 4.0Ghz and it's nice and stable. Overall I'm pretty pleased.

So I just copied the specs from my invoice when I had this baby built since I don't feel like looking =)

Once again, Just copied this from my invoice and removed the useless stuff since I am being lazy

i just found out what the intel 2500k and 2600k is. kinda wish i waited alittle longer before i build my computer. Still, im happy with my setup.

I can't believe I built my rig 3 years ago. It's still running strong though and I'm able to run Portal 2 at 1080p so that makes me happy. Originally, I was using a Coolermaster Centurion case, but I wanted a smaller case to fit in my TV stand.

I was using this as my office PC, but after we moved, my office went to the third floor and I was too lazy to go up there. Plus, we got an imac for the second floor office, a macbook for the couch, and I did all my gaming on the PS3 on the big screen so I really had no reason to go upstairs. We recently got rid of cable though and I wanted to be able to watch TV shows from my computer so I bought the Apevia case and did a transplant. The computer does get hot since it’s a small case in the enclosed TV stand, but so far, it hasn’t gotten out of hand.

Here’s my current config:

Windows XP Home (It works fine for what I need and I don’t want to go through the trouble of reinstalling everything)
Intel Q6600 w/stock cooling
Corsair 550VX PSU
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
MSI 8800GT OC edition
Corsair DDR2 PC2-6400 2x1GB RAM
Seagate 320gb SATA
LiteOn DVD Burner IDE (Too cheap to change this out)
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS (I’ve had this card since I bought my Dell 4600 8 or so years ago.)
Apevia X-Master Media Center Case

Is the Soundblaster card still worth it or will my motherboard sound be as good? I figure if I take it out, I can reduce some of the clutter.

My future plans in order of priority are to get a Samsung F4 2TB drive, a TV Tuner/DVR card, more RAM, a blu ray burner once they get down to about $20, and maybe Windows 7. I saw there’s an Avermedia dual tuner card that works pretty well. Any other recommendations?

Here's my current set-up:

Windows 7 Home Premium
Thermaltake Element G Case
OCZ ModXtreme Pro 700w PSU
Intel i5 2500k (Corsair H50 Cooler)
ASUS P8P67Pro Motherboard
ASUS AMD 6870 Graphics Card
G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB (2x 4gb) DDR3 1333
G.Skill Ripjaws 4GB (2x 2gb) DDR3 1333
Samsung 470 Series 64GB SSD (Boot drive)
Samsung F3 1TB HDD (data etc. plan to get another in a few months)
LiteOn DVD drive
EnGenius EUB9603 600w USB Wireless Internet Adapter (for picking up the whole neighborhoods internet ;) )
Logitech G15 Keyboard
Razer Lachesis Banshee Mouse
Microsoft Xbox 360 Wired Controller
Sony 40" Tv for monitor

Built this about 2 years ago or so...

CPU: Intel core i7 920 (Cooler Master V8 HSF)
Mobo: Asus P6t socket 1366
Ram: OCZ Intel XMP 6GBs (DDR3 1600) (2GBs x 3 DIMMs)
PSU: 750W PC Power & Cooling
GPU: 2x Sapphire ATI HD 5850 Xtreme 1GB running in CrossFire
HDD: WD 1TB Caviar Black
Case: Antec 900
Monitor: Acer 21'' 1080p

I just bought the 5850's on Newegg last night so they are not installed yet. They are replacing a pair of 9800GTX+'s in SLI, which have handled everything very well. I just want to upgrade to a DX11 setup. I'm also going to upgrade the ram to a full 24GBs over the summer.
24GB? lol :D
Yessir! :D

My mobo can hold up to 24GBs, and by golly, I'm gonna do it! I think it's $150 for 3 sticks of 4GBs with the XMP for my core i7. I have 6 DIMM slots that can hold a max of 24GBs...so yea! Lol! I may also get another HD 5850 to put in triple CrossFire, but then I would need to upgrade the PSU.

So my MBP circa 2006/2007 died on me last night. It's been booting rather slowly the last few days, and Firefox wouldn't even run on it anymore. Sucked it up and bought a new 2011 MBP 13 inch to replace it. This month just got uber expensive...
