Peter Jackson to produce `The Hobbit'

By JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer1 hour, 48 minutes ago

Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy "The Lord of the Rings."
Jackson, who directed the "Rings" trilogy, will serve as executive producer for "The Hobbit." A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.
Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after "Rings," despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion — an enormous success. The two sides nevertheless were able to reconcile, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) splitting "The Hobbit" 50/50, spokemen for both studios said Tuesday.
"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."
Two "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three "Lord of the Rings" films were made. Production is set to begin in 2009 with a released planned for 2010, with the sequel scheduled for a 2011 release.
New Line Cinema is owned by Time Warner. Sony and Comcast are among the owners of MGM.

:)

And it seems the plan is one movie about The Hobbit and then another connecting it to the trilogy in order to milk more money.

Excellent news. I'm also encouraged by the fact that they've split it into two films, hopefully that means no rushing and staying true to the book.
The Hobbit is the story of that old hobbit guy from LOTR right?
Yes, and it's a great book too. It's like LOTR lite for children.

Yeah, temporally the Hobbit takes place before any of the events in the LOTR books.

Hey Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo!

M. Night Shamalablabsldaslknsdn should direct it instead.

Cuz then the Titanic wouldn't sink and Bilbo would turn out to be a werewolf.

Better yet, let's get Micheal Bay on this as well. I want the monsters of Mordor on motorcycles.

I enjoyed the Hobbit a lot more than LOTR. I also happen to think, pacing-wise, it will make for a much better, tighter film.
A sequel to the Hobbit is in the works as well? Eeeeeeewwwwww.
The sequel to The Hobbit was already released.
The Hobbit is the story of that old hobbit guy from LOTR right?
Yes, it's about Bilbo's adventure with thirteen dwarves (including Gimil's father) to defeat the dragon Smaug at the Lonely Mountain.

Oh, yeah, it also shows how Bilbo found the One Ring, and his first encounter with Gollum.

That's not what he meant.

They are making TWO movies, one is The Hobbit, the other is a sequel of The Hobbit and a prequel to LOTR, but isn't based on any one book.

This version of "The Hobbit" will always be my first thought when mentioned:

Don't forget about the Micheal Bay explosions...they need an exploding dwarf in that shit. They could have the dwarf go on a suicide mission...

There is nowhere that says one is being made up. You have added that yourself. We know nothing and most likely they will break the hobbit into two films.

Jackson onboard is great news compared to what was last heard that Sam Raimi was going to direct....... and Bruce campbell was going to be Gandalf.

You're not alone Number83 and Thorbahn, I friggin loved that movie and I saw it for the first time about 2 years ago (I was 24).

The LOTR movies really pissed me off with the last 30 mins to an hour of the third film (return of the king i think). It was just so GAY! GAY GAY GAY! They made frodo and posse look like a bunch of fruity ass homosexual hobbits and that just ruined it for me. I'm a huge fan of the series and have read the Hobbit and LOTR but just really had a problem with how gay they made frodo and same seem at the end.
I'd rather have Jackson directing it.
It doesn't say anywhere in that press release that he isn't...

It's junk.

It's from the 70s, every scene has a really annoying song, and the animation definately makes you believe the artists were on some sort of psychedelic drugs the entire time.

I'm serious. I own the damn thing. I like it better than all the live action movies. And yes they sing but only because that's what they did in the friggin book.

At the fucknig end?!?!

It's 10 hours of them being gay! What the fuck are you watching!?

I was serious about likeing that 70's animated version of The Hobbitt as well. I watched it as a 24 year old and still really liked it. This just gives you some context for how long Tokein's stuff has been around. He was a great writer.

ANyway Bigdaddy, they were never as gay for so long earlier in the movie than the last half hour. WHiel there were some gay parts, teh last half our was like watching Gay midget kiddie porn.

Tolkein was actually a mild-mannered English professor who happened to write a sleeper hit.

Apparently he was very upset at all the letters he would get from 70s hippies claiming they understood what LOTR was really about (explanations ranging from drugs to WWII)

Once he got a letter from some hippie talking about how he read all three books in one sitting on an acid trip. The hippie had recently divorced his wife, and was so moved by the books that he climbed to the top of a mountain and burned his wedding ring.

Great, great movie. I wore out the VHS copy my library had when I was a kid. Don't forget that Rankin Bass also did a version of Return of the King when Bakshi didn't finish his LOTR cartoon.

WTF is Rankin Bass and Bakshi?
WTF is Rankin Bass and Bakshi?
Haha, Rankin Bass is the company that made the Hobbit and Return of the King. They also many Thundercats and I think many of the classic Christmas animated movies.

Bakshi is a director who planned to make the entire LOTR trillogy in an animated movie. He ran out of money halfway through and put out the first film with the story midway through The Two Towers. He planned on completing the story with a second movie but never completed it.

As a kid I absolutely looooved that song. I used to make my dad show me where it was in the book. Of course he just pointed to any old page, but I was excited anyway.
