Peter Steele, lead singer of Type-O Negative, dead at 48

I liked em, never took themselves very seriously and you do not see a lot of that in the music industry.

Best wishes to his family and friends; in before the puns too.

Damn, that sucks a lot. Bloody Kisses was one of my favorite albums when I was 15, and it still holds up today.

I can't believe his wikipedia page hasn't been updated yet. People usually are lightning fast on things like this.

As a few people around here probably already know, Type O Negative was my favorite band of all time, so obviously this hits me pretty hard. That "The Profit$ of Doom" tag which has been under my username forever is a Type O reference. Loved his work with Carnivore, too.

I don't really have anything else to say right now. Easily one of the most brilliant, innovative metal bands ever - they never fell in with a trend and held on to a sound that was completely unique to them. One of a small handful of bands where you hear a song and you know who it is without a doubt.

Really terrible. I can't believe I'll never hear a new record from them.

I'd read rumors of them doing Ozzfest this year. It would've been great for the kids coming for the Slipknots and whatnot to have been exposed to Type O.
I kinda liked October Rust more than Bloody Kisses. You can't go wrong with either one though.
yeah. Both kicked ass. I'd probably lean more towards OR more also but you can't go wrong with either one.

I just realized something - last year's Halloween show was their final performance ever. I was right in front against the stage, right in front of Peter the entire time. I'm pretty sad over the news but that realization makes me feel a bit better.

Their "popular" albums were great - if you liked October Rust check out Life is Killing Me. Their final album (Dead Again) is a departure that goes back to their roots a bit more and is something any fan of the Beatles and Sabbath (their two biggest influences) should check out.

"I Know You're fucking Someone Else" is one of my favorite songs of all time, unfortunately I couldn't find it on Youtube. The original studio version with the "real" title was available though, and is still awesome:

Other good offerings that a lot of people may have missed since they were not on Bloody Kisses or October Rust:

I was a bit disappointed with their last one.

It was definitely a departure and sort of a trip back to their early days (and in some cases even Peter's Carnivore stuff) - a lot more Beatles and especially Sabbath-influence than usual (which is saying something for this band). it took a while to grow on me but now there are several songs on it I love. An Ode To Locksmiths & Hail & Farewell to Britain are two of my favorite Type O songs ever.

I can't believe it. Carnivore was great, Type O had some good stuff too. RIP buddy.

Really shocked me. However, besides the allegations of him doing coke again, he already had heart issues from what I understand. Plus, taller people are prone to earlier deaths. Still, really sad. The man had immense talent, and I always loved their irreverence.

Heavy metal lost a legend. I can't count how many rough times I got through because of their music. Rest In Peace Pete- your memory will be honored through the countless fans who will continue to rock out to your music.

Learned the news at work today, browsing to facebook on my phone...I could not believed it, there was a photo of Peter on the Dino Cazares page, and when I began to read the comments...damn,there it was, that Peter died?Went to the net, and found the sad truth...Today, connected my Zune to my pc at work, and listened to the whole Bloody Kisses album, while working and singing , my own private tribute to Peter, everyone at work (like 20 )new he died. They say who.and this was me...Peter Steele ,vocalist of Type O Negative,Heart failure, NY born, 48 old.

First heard of them in 1993, a friend put a tape of them on my car, a cassette tape! And I felt in love with the first albums....I really loved I KNOW U ARE fuckING SOMEONE ELSE!Christian Woman!Black no.1....The list goes on and on....Just this week I was watching the 2 dvd's they realeased...Damn...Type O , is dead, but their music, and Peter will live on .They were really a UNIQUE band, really were....

But like Peter sang,EVERYTHING DIES...RIP...May the afterlife bring peace to your soul.

I just realized a little while ago - I was there for the last show they ever played - Halloween night in Detroit last year. Was right in front against the stage, standing right in front of Peter the whole time. So in that regard, I feel pretty lucky to have been there.

Leaving soon, goin' for a walk with a bottle of Finlandia ("I took some steroids and adrenaline / Finlandia vodka and hallucinogens") and the MP3 player. I know it seems weird to be that upset over something like this, but I don't care.

Will get back to normal tomorrow.

^ They do great covers. Cinnamon Girl is *almost* better than Neil Young's version and Summer Breeze put goosebumps on my arms in "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (too bad the rest of the movie didn't capitalize well enough on Type O's initial mood setting).

The only Type-O album I have is "Slow, Deep and Hard". I was meaning to explore their other cds. I am a fan of Carnivore though (that's his old band)....great stuff.

EDIT: There are some funny videos of him being on the Ricky Lake Talk show. They are on youtube.

Finally, an "official statement." The bandmate quotes make me smile.

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Type O Negative front man, bassist, and our band mate, Peter Steele passed away last night of what appears to be heart failure.

Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music for our follow up to "Dead Again" released in 2007.

The official cause of death has yet to be determined pending autopsy results. The funeral services will be private and memorial services will be announced at a future date. We’d like to share our thoughts and those of Peter’s family below.
We are truly saddened to lose our friend and appreciate the tremendous outpouring today from around the world.

Sincerely,

Josh, Kenny and Johnny

Josh Silver: “Peter, My endless source of frustration, (as I'm yours) you have really done it this time. You have changed and touched countless lives through music, comedy and often brutal honesty. You've made life both interesting and irritating and I could not imagine not having known you for 37 years. It still isn't true in my mind but in time I will miss you and the creating that we all endured together. We certainly disagreed constantly and I believe (and hope) we all learned from each other. Should I call you my brother, friend or neighbor? I can only call you Peter (and usually after 2 PM). We laughed at ourselves more times then I can count. Knowing humans are preposterous creatures and I know we reveled in that fact. I will miss you in time, but at this moment your premature departure seems surreal and has pissed me off to no end. Though I never told you that I harbor a deep respect for you, I do. Goodbye my friend.”

Kenny Hickey: “Peter Steele was one of the most brilliant and funny personalities in music and it was all for real. Half the time people thought he was joking, but he was actually telling the truth. Part of me died with him.”

Johnny Kelly: “It’s impossible for me to put into a few sentences what I am feeling at the moment Peter. I’m not sure if I should eulogize or roast you. Both good and bad, we went on one hell of a ride together and sadly, the ride has come to an end. You truly were a unique person. Your music touched many people. Myself included. Whether it was talking about The Beatles, power tools, how Pluto was no longer considered a planet or calling me at 3am asking me to drive to your house to have a fistfight with you, you always kept it interesting. It was a privilege to have been your bandmate. It’s something that I will always cherish.”

RIP Peter sad to see you go so soon. :(

My sister got "Bloody Kisses" back in 93' and she played it for me and his voice was so different than the other metal and rock we liked.

I used to listen to "Bloody Kisses" and "October Rust" all the time in high school (I also have Life is Killing Me). Since some girls I liked worshiped type O so it became part of my soundtrack for debauchery

. I also checked out Carnivore when I got back into thrash metal it was truly awesome stuff!

Truly sad to see him go :(

It was about 2 weeks ago I was looking on TON's wiki page to see if it had any news on a new album since they were due for a new one sometime next year since the last few albums have all been about 4 years apart.

As a long time TON fan I was sorry to hear about this today and it seems as if April is a bad month for deaths in rock/metal.

That is too bad. I remember seeing them open a show back in the 90s. I wish I could recall the headliner. I didn't realize they were still around.

Original, non-censored Christian Woman video:

If you've never seen their "After Dark" video with the commentary on and you're a fan, you need to. So hilarious. The band relentlessly rips themselves and each other. My favorite DVD commentary ever.

Just got back from a 3 hour walk, drinking Finlandia vodka, listening to their stuff.

Music is never going to be the same for me.

I'm going to dig out my old issues of Metal Edge this weekend. The solo interviews with Peter or the ones with him and other members were usually some of the best and most hilarious ones the magazine had to offer.

Slow, Deep and Hard is not representative of the sound they became known for. It was a little harder and more punk than the sound you hear on Bloody Kisses and after. However, the later albums are what most people love them for. If you really like Carnivore, you may prefer those earlier albums though (SDaH and Origin of the Feces).

Origin of the Feces is pretty much the only time a band has sold me the same songs twice and I didn't feel ripped off.

Anyway, I'll try to break it out here for anyone looking to check out stuff they haven't heard - this doesn't apply to every single track on the albums, but overall here's how I'd group them:

The slicker, easier-on-the-ears stuff:
Bloody Kisses, October Rust, Life is Killing Me

The more aggressive, harder stuff:
Slow Deep and Hard, Dead Again

Slow, Doom-ier and incredibly depressing:
World Coming Down

Fake live versions, humor abounds:
The Origin of the Feces

I own two versions of the Bloody Kisses cd. When I first got into them I did not realize there was two different versions of BK at the time and picked up the "shorter" version. No regrets though.

TON does a killer cover of Sabbath's Paranoid(Origin of the Feces) & Black Sabbath(The Least Worst Of & Nativity in Black: Tribute to Black Sabbath). I especially like the BS cover.

Re: the two versions of Bloody Kisses - I preferred the regular/original version. On the digipack/second version, they reordered the songs, which sort of messed with the flow of the album, cut out a couple of awesome ones (We Hate Everyone and Kill all the White People), and added a track I wasn't a fan of (Suspended in Dusk).

Guys from Sabbath commented...Bill Ward is weird.
Legendary heavy metal bassist Geezer Butler (BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL) has released the following statement regarding the passing of TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele:

"I was so saddened to hear of Pete Steele passing away. He truly was one of the nicest blokes I've ever met. He came to the first G//Z/R gig, in New York, showing his support for us.

"I last saw him in Copenhagen, on the HEAVEN & HELL tour, where he interviewed me for a bassist-to-bassist piece. We had lots of fun talking together.

"I always maintained that the best SABBATH cover was TYPE O's version of 'Black Sabbath' on the 'Nativity In Black' album.

"I always looked forward to hearing what he'd come out with — he was always surprising, musically, and such a very special person.

"One of the truly great ones has now left the stage.

"R.I. P., Pete — Bog Blast yea."

BLACK SABBATH Drummer On PETER STEELE: 'His Passing Is An Enormous Loss To The Metal Community' - Apr. 16, 2010

BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward has released the following statement regarding the passing of TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele:

"The flamboyant ambassador of metal's substratum is dead.

"I am diverted from my next indicated thing to do. I am compelled to pause and digress and re-listen to one of my all-time favorite bands, TYPE O NEGATIVE. I fall into memorable moments, to enhance my first discoveries of Peter Steele.

"I don't want to believe he's died. I've felt in shock since the early morning sad news of today arrived.

"Peter Steele — a brilliant musician, songwriter, singer has died. His death is a tragedy and heartbreaking. His passing is an enormous loss to the metal community and to music, period.

"In music, he challenged life itself in a poetic, prophetic, charismatic and extraordinarily insightful way. A world observer, a teller of tales, a renaissance man, a man from the future, a powerful force in today's maladies and life challenges.

"This man will not be forgotten. I raise my goblet of water and praise him. I thank him, and I burn candles and desire incense aromas to fill our house, now illuminated in his honour. Candles burning outside flicker, and the sea crashes onto the shore. We are still. We are in memory.

"Peter, you will be celebrated forever."
