Phantasy Star Universe
yea no way id get this for ps2 though. much rather play on 360 ( or even pc). If its anything like the old ones im sure that their will be contant updates and downloadable quests etc... I doubt the ps2 version will even support the hd.

Xbox live always makes cross platform difficult. It would be great for it to be compatible with pc/ps2 etc.
How *will* PS2 people get updates, if the game doesn't support the HDD?

Has anyone read anything concrete about plans for downloadable quests and content??

I'd much rather play it on PS2 on the couch, but if there's downloads I guess I'm relegated to PC...unless I'm missing something here....
The price Per month for PSU is prolly going to be the same as PSO $8 IF there even is a online cost. Also, why does everyone use reviews from Ign or Gamespot? Even know the Japanese version is already out and running the U.S version is going to be different(I forgot how its different but i remember readin something on Sega.com). Even know PSU is only 1 game its just about the same pricing IF PSU has a online charge.
Are you referring to my post?? Well, gee, I don't know, maybe because this is a thread about PSU and people were asking about the online experience and how much it costs, etc... This PREVIEW (not review at all) on IGN was just posted on the weekend and I thought an incredibly timely bit of info for this thread. It contains a bunch of info about how the servers work, how much it costs, etc - yes, it is the Japanese version but I can't imagine the online setup being immensely different for the U.S. release - especially with respect to the lobbies, how to meet up with people, etc. Looks like good info - especially for someone like me who has never played any PSO - I had no idea how all this stuff worked.

Phantasy Star Universe temporarily collapsed
Technical problems force Sega to shut down servers just days after release; game to relaunch in October.

Creating a universe is a big job, and Sega is taking a mulligan on its Phantasy Star Universe to get the job right. In a letter addressed to Phantasy Star Online users this week, Sega apologized for a series of technical glitches that stymied many users' efforts to play the game online.

The game, which went on sale for the PlayStation 2 and PC in Japan on August 31, suffered problems in its online mode from the outset. When trying to connect online, players were met with various technical issues, incluing blank screens and corrupted character data. As a result, Sega was forced to shut down its servers on the evening of September 3 and is working to fix the problem. Service for testing and troubleshooting purposes is scheduled to resume tomorrow.

The game will formally relaunch in October, and the free 30-day trial included with the game will be calculated from this time. The bad news for early adopters who struggled through the game's issues to play is that "it is possible that during the testing period, player data will be rolled back or deleted."

Looks like Japan has another month to wait! I hope they can scratch out these issues before launch. It certainly makes me reluctant to buy the game immediately.

Whoever gets this for the PC is actualy stupid, if you don't have a ps2 or Xbox 36o. Why? Because the PC version is going to lag out the ass
XBL tends to cost around $54 for an automatic 1-year renewal or [Variable Prices] depending upon whether or not you have an XBox or a 360 and whether or not you can find the sets/cards on massive clearance.

And I would imagine that PSU may have higher server costs than PSO depending upon the amount of activity the servers are going to get, much less the bandwidth necessary in order to ensure that everyone is at least having a decent experience.

To top it off, I could have sworn that most of the major gaming magazines and RPG websites mentioned a few months after PSU was pushed back that the 360 version will not be able to link up with PS2 and PC players online. Honestly, that pretty much seals the deal for me right there, regardless of server costs. I don't have the time to play on the PC and I don't want to waste my last network connection at school on the PS2 and a single online game.

Seems like a step in the right direction, though, although I've been aching for a Phantasy Star V since...IV.
The gamecube version already had the servers packed with people and the price was still only 6$ i think. So PSU won't cost much more
Orange Lounge Radio Confirmed it. The 360 version is free and the PS2 and PC will have monthly charges.

I'm definetly going to eventually pick up the 360 version. As soon as I get a 360 that is and the game comes out. Definetly going to get one by the end of the year.
Well duh the 360 version is going to be free, you guys already have to pay for xbox live

The other threads seem to be OK but this one is wacky - it keeps saying there's new posts but I see nothing past #20 EXCEPT now when I'm replying - now I see all the double/triple/multi posts (when it kept giving errors on posting)... Yikes... Hopefully the CAG forums will settle down by tomorrow

As for the game itself - well, with the online problems in Japan and the monthly fee for PS2, I'll definitely wait on this one. I have a preorder paid in full at GR - might just switch that to something else, probably a Wii game...

yea well the gc version is 8.95.. same as xbox version. i have like all the versions of pso.

im actually considering to suscribe to blue burst again

please tell that to Square-Enix.

I think I'll try this out on the 360...don't see how this could work out well on the PS2 without an HDD.

Holy moly, sorry for all the posts- I kept getting a "memory size" error and didn't think any posts were going through!!

Mods please delete the duplicates...

Anyway, my original question still stands--

Has anyone read the skinny on downloadable content planned? I never played the original PSO so I'm not sure how much there was for that game.

It worked out extremly well on Gamecube without HDD

I would hope that by the US launch they'd have all the bugs worked out from the piss-poor JP release, so I wouldn't worry TOO much about it here.

some people in this thread make me not want to play this...

I already have it fully paid off/reserved at gamestop from abunch of credit i got.

I enjoyed the blue burst beta, as well as playing the oldschool dreamcast ones. Sucks that it has a monthly fee though.

Thats a pretty big revival...

I might get the PS2 verison because I have the new PSTwo with the modem built in. XD NOW the big question is... can you play the same character on all verisons? lol Like is it online saved? and you can play on PC or PS2 or 360... might be fun idea.

The characters are all stored online. You should be able to access your character from the PS2/PC since they have the same servers. I'm not too sure about the Xbox 360 though...

Nope nope, it doesnt work like that. The characters work by save files since u can play the same character online and offline

Unfortunately, this isn't true for PSU (as much as I would like it to). For offline mode you can play Ethan's story or make up your own character (Cast, Beast, Human, or Newman) and play that in the Extra Mode (once you have this unlocked).

However, if you want to go online, you would have to create another character (which is saved on Sega's server). Sega did this to stop/try to prevent people from cheating/hacking, though I'm not sure how effective this'll be..

Since PC and PS2 players will be able to play with each other, you should be able to use your online character from the PC or the PS2. However, since the Xbox 360 is separate from the PC/PS2 (Microsoft managing the servers), I'm not sure how that'll work.

Leveling up in the offline mode is also much faster than the online mode.

Update: Pso-World has more info: http://www.pso-world.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=2368

"3.8: Can I be Ethan or any one else from offline mode online, then?
A: No. You cannot be 'the' Ethan Waber, or any supporting characters, nor your 'extra mode' heroes, although I'm sure you will be able to make someone who looks similar. Your online heroes have their own stories to create!"

Damn, that sucks. Guess that means no more item duping.

It's $10 a month:

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/737/737963p1.html

I'm definitely canceling my preorder for this. I'll pick it up once it has been out for a while and I can get the game itself for $10 or less. I just don't have time with all the new stuff coming out (not to mention my backlog) to get caught up in what will surely be a HUGE time-killer, especially if it costs me money :D. If it evolves into the most wonderful online game ever, then I can pick it up later and join in...

Re-reading that article, it sounds like even 360 owners have to pay the $9.99. I thought we heard it would be on Live for them? 360 owners do get a free beta test THIS week though!

How is it, anyone playing?

Not sure if I'm gonna pick this up or not. Seems like a great time-waster...which is what I'm afraid of!! ;)

My friend Matt downloaded the beta and played online. However, he said it was a bit laggy and that people were getting disconnected (this was during the afternoon so I'm not sure about now).

If you like PSO, you might get into PSU. However, if you've played a ton of PSO, you might be pissed that it's really not much of an upgrade. If you've never played PSO, you might hate PSU.

Put in about 3 hours last night and wasn't super excited about it...had more fun harassing people in the lobby with Rolento than actually playing

After spending too much time in Phantasy Star Universe, you will either turn metro sexual or neon.

feel free io to come over anytime in PSU to see the technique in action ;)

metro? SOMEBODY didn't find the Men's Twister Room. It's behind that one neon sign with the small writing, just to the left of the beauty shop. You need to pay 10 photon-wrapped unknown meats to get in. Those are dropped by the hamsters with ground effects.

I'm guessing I have to ask a sexually confused store clerk for directions?
Tomorrow Owooowowoo
Wednesday. It ships tomorrow. Unless you live very close to the distribution centers.

I played the beta for about 10 hours (wanted to try out EVERYTHING). The game is blah. Worth playing for free but definitely not worth $10 a month.

yeap. i just got the game off a rental shop and i got to say that i would never spend 10 per month to play this.

Im on ps2 version. My online name is Rahxephon and im(at the moment) lvl 12. If any1 wants to party up just tell me,or maybe we can go do some mission runs tomorrow.

On the GS website, the product page has this description:

A monthly fee is required to play online.

Is it true?! How much is it anyway? Never thought of getting charged to play PS2 games online!

It looks like some stores here didn't get enough of the bonus soundtrack CD to go around for the folks who preordered. How about you?

Well final fantasy 11 had a monthly fee but whatever its not going to put that big of a dent in my wallet. The price is 10$ a month

played it saturday for around 3 hours after renting it that day. Never played it again. I dont know its just something that i dont play video games anymore for some reason. I used to spend 2 to 5 hours per night on the weekends playing video games but these last few months I havent.

So, is it worth purchasing for the story mode? I have no interest in the online portion, and other than Gamebrink, no sites have reviewed this yet.

I want the PC version (most likely the best version of all three) for online play... but for $10 a month?! No thanks, Sega.

The PC version is the same as all the other versions, besides the fact that the PC version lags here and there.
