I can't contain myself anymore, I want a PSP. But before I commit could you guys answer a couple questions for me or direct me to a link that will?

1. Know of any good deals on one?

2. I don't mind buying one preowned, or would you recomend just getting a new PSP?

3. I know it's taboo on CAG to talk about "emulation," but is there anything I need to know before buying one if I'm intrested in playing back-ups on my PSP?

-- Any additional info that might help me would be greatly appreciated. I don't know much about the PSP so forgive my ignorance.

1. Nope, sorry.

2. Probably new unless you know there's nothing wrong with the used one (like get it from EB or something so you can inspect the screen)

3. You should look for a FW 2.6 or lower so you can downgrade to FW 1.5 and run DevHook and any other homebrew programs like NES or SNES emulators or whatever - the PSP is highly customizable at this point.

DevHook emulates FW 2.71 on the PSP and it's fully functional (internet browser, RSS feeds, etc.). It also lets you load ISOs or CISOs directly from your memory stick so you can play backups (or ones download from a torrent site or whatever). It currenty supports every released game. There are also programs that allow you to dump your own UMD into an ISO file and then compress it into a CISO. There's so much you can do with it. FW 2.8 reportedly just got hacked but it will be a few months at least (if ever) before someone designs a working downgrader for it.

Sometimes you can snipe some good deals on EBay like I did mine. I payed around 220 for it and got 5 games and 2 movies. Core or new systems don't seem to get the deals, but preowned with games seems to be where the best value is.

I love mine, haven't gone a week without playing it in 6 months.

get a white PSP. do it. the buttons on the black psp are practically flat. it's worth it to spend a few more bucks and get the white one, as the buttons are raised about a quarter inch and are much more responsive. You may have noticed a lot of people complaining about how it's practically impossible to play Darkstalkers on the psp because the controls suck. That's actually a hardware problem, not the game's fault, believe it or not. It's much easier to play fighters and the other 2-d games with the raised controls.
And you won't have to wipe your hand grease off of it after every time you play since it's white.

you can get a new one for around $230 shipped from play-asia or you could probably land one on Ebay for under $200 used, maybe even with some games.

Some drawbacks, besides being more expensive, are that you won't be able to run your homebrew stuff, as the firmware will most likely be a later one and that you won't be able to play U.S. umds.

also, pre-owned isn't bad for the PSP-- there are tons of used systems on ebay, so you can definitely hook a great bargain with some games and a memory stick. Just make sure you get a complete description about dead pixels and the screen condition.

Very well summarized. DevHook is as good as advertised. Your best bet for finding a new PSP with old firmware is to look for "value" pack ones from stores that don't sell a lot of PSP's. The new white ones or entertainment pack ones will most likely have FW 2.71 or above preloaded.

Sorry I didn't reply to any of your posts. I read all your posts and you all were very helpful. I just got the cash to buy a PSP (I sold a Valkyrie Profile on eBay for $160.) which should pay for the bulk of it.

I decided to find a preowned one on eBay for about $200, maybe with a couple games. The white PSP sounds tempting.

How's the FW now? I heard it doesn't matter what version FW you have anymore to play backups. Is that true, or did someone feed me a pack of lies?

Pack of lies. There is a downgrader for 2.71 and maybe even 2.8 but 2.81 just came out so if you have that you are SOL for now. I doubt it though if you are buying used from eBay unless the seller is a DB and updates it before shipping.

Got it. Are their any benifits to having a higher FW? Also The newest game I want to get is Tekken DR, do you know if that game will upgrade the FW to 2.8 or higher? Or know were I can find that info?

There are more features with higher firmware but a lot of them are useless IMO unless you use the PSP for multimedia. Tekken requires 2.6 or 2.71 but do not upgrade (no game "forces" you to). DevHook emulates 2.71 so there's no need to upgrade FW - you can run the UMD just fine with it.

I was told it automaticly upgrades, again another "pack of lies." You've been extremely helpful. Can't wait to get my PSP.

It should be noted that use of programs such as Devhook and other homebrew/hacks could possibly ruin your PSP. Just so you know before you dive into all that stuff.

Do you know of any Horror stories?

Finally bought one off eBay. $185 for the System all the orginal hook ups and memory stick, an additional 4GB Memory Stick, A Battery that's supposed to last longer than the orginal one, and NBA 06. Not bad I guess.

That 4GB stick is what sold me.

I guess downgrading could brick a PSP but installing Devhook certainly won't because you don't flash the internal memory. There are step-by-step tutorials floating around with pics and everything on how to downgrade PSPs to 1.5. If you follow the instructions you shouldn't have a problem.

Yea, I agree that the chance is low, but there is a risk involved that I thought the OP should be aware of.

I totally agree - there's always a risk of bricking the thing when you mess around with it.

:bomb: I bought a system with a 1 gig stick and a game for almost $300 a little less than 10 months ago.

Well, I don't have much to add to what's already been said. But one thing that really surprised me about the psp is that it's not as fragile as everyone makes it out to be. I've dropped mine spilled water on it and my biggest problem are finger print smudges. The only protection I have on it is a screen protector.

The only thing is make sure that to completely shut it down you have to hold the switch in place for about ~10 secs. Otherwise you'll only put it in suspension, which was what I did for several months.
