I have played the the first 2 for (ps one.. and on the xbox) roomate has a ps2.. so i finally picked up MGS3.

Its been a while since i played the last two games.... so is there any background i need to know for the storyline ?... or is it explained in the game ?

Hey I also started playing it, Snake Eater right? Does it glitch anywhere when there speaking?

I've played The Twin Snakes for gamecube, and its kinda cool to see all the bosses making a comeback. As for the storyline, I dont think I will ever understand it. I know nothing of war other than one side tries to kill the other.

The story is pretty self-contained, but if you want to get the full impact of the subplots and of the greater main plot I'd highly suggest you look on wikipedia and catch yourself up on the plots of the earlier games. You can still really enjoy the game without it but the background info helps. Just stay clear of any spoilers.

Most of the game is it's own story. It is a prequel remember? Like the guy above me said, check out some wikipedia articles to refersh your memory.

Riyonuk, my game is fine, so I don't know anything about all those people saying it's normal. I ddon't have any brekas during the codec convos, they are all smooth.

it has nothing to do with MGS, and the snake dude is WAY cooler than solid snake because he has a knife and can fight and shit.

he's like boss snake dude or something, but yeah, way cooler and better to control.

from what I understand, there is stuff dotted through out it that are supposed to be real "holy shit" moments for people who have been closely following the story, especially at the end.

I hadn't played either all the way through, but still loved it. but there were definite times where I was like "I dunno what the hell they are talking about."

I appreciate you using the proper terminology, Apossum

As for the times where you don't know what they're talking about... most of those are usually filled in by events in other games in the series... some things are intentionally unanswered and are being left for later.

It is possble to play the game without having prior knowledge of the earlier serie's entries.

But to get the full impact of the storyline and understand more of every details, having previous experience is immensely helpful.

Hey, here's the guy who knows!

I got extra wins in SF2 the other by having him tell me about the MGS series while we fought

jk.

btw, is Metal Gear Acid a completely separate side story?

MGS3 is like the begining of the begining. Chronologically the series runs like this: MGS3, Metal Gear (NES), Metal Gear 2 (NES), MGS/MGS:Twin Snakes, MGS2, then the upcoming MGS4: Guns of the Patriots.

I just finished MGS3 for the second time and all I have to say is that you are in for one hell of a ride. Also, the Ac!d series is a completely different snake or something. Completely unrelated to the other 5.

Alternate universe and not considered part of the official storyline. Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (the GBC game) is also an alternate universe game.

MGS3 is part of what is called the Big Boss Trilogy (MGS3, MG1, MG2), which is why MG1 and MG2 were included in Subsistence. It's a prequel that explains why things happened the way they did in MG1 and MG2, games most modern players have never played.

The Solid Snake Trilogy is MGS1, MGS2, and MGS4. Although I'm sure they'll make more games after MGS4, Kojima seems pretty intent on moving onto something else and this time he is appears to be grooming a successor to take the series over.
