This is mainly to compete with the Xbox 360 4GB sku. Sony announced this sku in Europe last year along with the Super Slim. It must of been selling well enough to bring it over here to the US and Canada.Oh Sony, y u so silly? Selling a $100 PS3 for $200.
Yeah but compared to the other bundles that have hit $200 or close to it. Why would you go through the trouble to upgrade the HDD? Hell why wouldnt you just grab the GTA5 bundle for $270? You get an upgrade and GTA5 for another $70.you can sill upgrade the HDD
just delete and reinstall, yes it sucks, but for the "casual" gamer, they wont have more than a couple games in their library. keep in mind our comments our biased we are cags, we probably have at least a hundred games lol.The only problem is that Sony has mandatory installs for a ton of games which I believe is because of their crappy blu-ray reader. That would shit the 12GB incredibly fast.
It's amazing that it's successful because I imagine some games would be unplayable on this model because they need several gb for game data alone like Gran Turismo 5.htz, on 10 Aug 2013 - 3:38 PM, said:This is mainly to compete with the Xbox 360 4GB sku. every day isnt black fridayHell i got the 250 GB Super slim with Uncharted 1 and 2 and infamous Collection for $200 on black Friday.
Not really complaints. The price is just a bit high for what it is. The 4GB 360s are going for around $180 now from Target.every day isnt black friday
cant believe people are complaining about this (wait yes I can)
It's obv to compete against the 360 system as stated and good for people who need to buy another ps3 because their old ones crapped out on them or something. Someone with a external hard drive already mostly.
not for the masses
Some people buy ps3s just for media purposes/bluray. Good deal for them.
Crappy blu-ray player? The PS3 has been one of the best Blu-ray players on the market for several years. Besides what other current gen consoles play blu-rays?The only problem is that Sony has mandatory installs for a ton of games which I believe is because of their crappy blu-ray reader. You can't be serious, right? This thing offers 3X the storage space, a blu-ray drive/3D blu-ray movies also, and free "access" to many media apps. I think it makes a great replacement or entry level device to get people to go have a look at it in the stores. MSRP is $199.99 but it doesn't mean retailers won't drop the price later on.Not really complaints. The price is just a bit high for what it is. The 4GB 360s are going for around $180 now from Target.
The AC3 bundle has been $230 for a 500GB and AC3.every day isnt black friday
cant believe people are complaining about this (wait yes I can)

As others have pointed out most people outside sites like CAG aren't hardcore gamers and don't have a huge collection of games. The AC3 bundle has been $230 for a 500GB and AC3.
I understand people dont use/need the space, but I try to get more bang for my buck.
If it is truly a 12GB PS3, then it should be like $120. Sony should be trying to get the consoles in everyones home.
Not anymore they don't.This seems like an odd move given how much space game installs can take up but this probably isn't aimed towards the knowledgeable gamer, either. I'm guessing this uses some type of built in memory (I doubt they'd use a HDD for 12GB, right? Do they even make them that small?) and will probably sell some bundle with an installable HDD (possibly pre-loaded with some games) and a PSN+ card.
Doesn't work like that. Once you install a HDD the 12GB is gone. Not anymore they don't.
It would have to either be flash memory or an SSD at this period of time in technology. If it is just like the EU model, it should be SSD. Which makes far more sense because of the install requirement for most games. This also means any memory recalled from the SSD (textures and stuff) should load quicker than those that have the game installed on a HDD.
Also, it would be a smart move to buy this model, then throw in a HDD down the road to maximize your memory allotment. (Kinda like the 360 4GB bundle. Get a 500 GB HDD and you essentially have 504 GB of memory.)
No it is the same 12GB that Europe got.Is it possible that they meant 120 GB? The 120 GB model will get its price slashed to $199.99 on that day? That makes more sense to me.
How is that possible? Do they actually use up the HDD slot for the SSD? I would think it would be hard wired in.Doesn't work like that. Once you install a HDD the 12GB is gone.
Thru Newegg on Ebay they have been 230-240 a couple time in the last few months. Amazon had the GOW Ascension and the Uncharted 3 on sale as did the Best BuyWhere are new ps3 500gb bundles selling for $230?
I know its a deal when it happens, so comparing the lowest price may not be the best, but again just compare it to the GTA5 bundle then that launches at 270. For $70, you get 488GB more in space and GTA 5As others have pointed out most people outside sites like CAG aren't hardcore gamers and don't have a huge collection of games.
For someone that wants a blu-ray player / media streamer with apps and wants to play the occasional madden/COD/AAA games that they can rent from Red Box this is the best deal going for them.
Combine that with the fact that MSRP is $199.99 and it will most definitely go on sale from time to time it is a very good value for people that aren't the most informed when it comes to gaming.
Edit: and I hope people understand it's borderline moronic to compare the base price (i.e. MSRP) of a system that is just launching to the lowest price a particular bundle has ever been.
I mean seriously... those 500GB PS3 consoles are NOT ING $230. They are $269.99 and just had a drop from $299.99.
If you are going to compare the lowest price they have ever been then you might as well compare them to this bundle at what it could be (ex. $150).
He said "crappy Blu-ray reader" not "player." Meaning the actual Blu-ray drive inside, and not the system as a whole.Crappy blu-ray player? The PS3 has been one of the best Blu-ray players on the market for several years. Besides what other current gen consoles play blu-rays?
Could you point out a better current gen blu-ray reader... in a gaming console? People complain about PS3 load times and attribute it to the reader but what the heck are you comparing it to? The DVD drive in the Wii/360/Wii U?He said "crappy Blu-ray reader" not "player." Meaning the actual Blu-ray drive inside, and not the system as a whole.
I guess unlike the Xbox 360 the PS3 isn't design to have access to 2 primary drive. How is that possible? Do they actually use up the HDD slot for the SSD? I would think it would be hard wired in.
I posted this to give people a heads up that a cheaper PS3 might come next week. It is up to them to decide if this is what they want. Some CAGs may just not want to wait for a deal but just want a PS3 at a reasonable price right now. I have seen this asked in the "request deal/advice" forum of CAG many times when a PS3 deal just doesn't come up or they need a replacement immediately at the store.Could this really be considered a deal? Considering most are saying that this is more for people who really don't care a lot about games and just want it for blu-ray/netflix?
I think people are talking about the fact that the PS3 uses a fairly slow BD drive (2x read speed) while most BD players these days use much faster drives. For movies, it's not a huge issue but for games, it leads to longer load times, texture pop-ins, etc which developers try to alleviate with mandatory installs, lower resolution textures, etc.Could you point out a better current gen blu-ray reader... in a gaming console? I never understood that. I don't like the wait times, load times, etc. but I have nothing else to compare it to
For the time being. If devs decide to go full on 1080p all the time, it may pose a problem in the future. The PS4 will use a 6x BD drive, which will likely reduce (if not eliminate) those problems.
Like me. If I can pick one of these up in the $100-150 range, I have a 320GB laptop hard drive laying around that I could format and throw in it.There are also people who have extra HDD laying around and have no need for another one.

cocaine is a helluva drugNice. So if its real I guess it'll go for like $50 on black Friday?
Thing is, it takes not even 5 minutes to replace a hard drive so why not? i have a 40gb fat ps3 that just died. I put my own 750gb hdd in a while ago. If this 12gb ps3 were around 150 or less, id be all over it.Yeah but compared to the other bundles that have hit $200 or close to it. Why would you go through the trouble to upgrade the HDD? Hell why wouldnt you just grab the GTA5 bundle for $270? You get an upgrade and GTA5 for another $70.
Honestly, I wouldnt be surprised if this was a 120GB for $200
