PlayStation 4 - General Discussion Thread

Knack looked like a generic console launch game from the get go. At least this launch we won't have impossible achievements this time around. (Looking at you Quake 4 and being number 1 on leader board achievement.)

I can't count how many people at retailers have been trying to push Knack on me.

"Oh you are getting a PS4? Pick up Knack it is the best!"

Killzone is about the only game I am really interested in at launch have quite a few preorders for other games but the fact you can use a PS4 controller with you PS3 (wired in) kind of makes me want to pick up a new controller. My best buy got their stand up today and the controller is insanely comfy on my hands.

Screenshots of The Order. It looks like a steampunk Gears of War. YES PLEASE.
This. Really wish it was a launch title, it will be the first exclusive I get maybe.

Still on the fence for killzone, recently started to play 2 and got about halfway through so far before I got distracted by other games, and never played 3. So if I do get the new one it might be after I get around to finishing 2 and 3 so could be a bit.

If I do end up picking one up at launch, I will likely pick up a copy of Knack. I have a lot of faith in Mark Cerny's ability as a game designer. Any game he was involved in producing is worth a try. While Knack might not be the style of game that some launch enthusiasts might be interested in, I am confident that it will be a solid title. I'm thinking it will be in the same vein as Ratchet and Clank, only with more puzzle solving and less shooting.

I know I'll be getting AC:IV for launch and Warframe too since I play it on the PC (assuming cross play/save is still there). Also probably pick up BF4 and NFS and Lego Marvel Super Heroes.

I too am on the fence with Knack.  Looking at the vids and screenshots makes it more interesting. But we'll see.

Dell.com has a 25.00 egift card promo for COD and BF4 pre-orders.

These types of deals is the only time I will buy new games. Was only a little interested in both of these games but cannot resist with a 25 gift card on day 1 release.

I pre-ordered both of them and if amazon gets around to matching the promo then I will cancel from dell and get them from amazon for the faster shipping.

I wonder if the touch pad will end up being one of the most useless additions to a controller design to date?

And I would still rather just buy a 6axis without the rumble and without touch pad if they offered it.

It's the only game I've pre-ordered. New consoles typically mean a new slate to try out new IPs. There are too many sequels on both consoles this time out. I want something fresh, and Kack is the only game that fits the bill.

I doubt that. The touch pad is a button on most games so it will be used a bit.

Sony Outlines the 300mb Day One Patch

Sony Computer Entertainment Announces A Variety Of Features Available On PlayStation®4(PS4™) System At Launch

System software update version 1.50 to be released along with the PlayStation®4 system's North American launch; features include remote play with the PlayStation®Vita system, and game play sharing via the "SHARE" button that enhance game play experience

TOKYO, Oct. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced that it will release system software update version 1.50*1 for PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system simultaneously with the official North American launch of the system on November 15, 2013. By updating to the latest system software version, users will be able to enjoy a variety of exciting features from the day of launch.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20020701/SFM066LOGO)

The PS4 system was designed from the ground up to ensure that the very best games and most immersive experiences reach PlayStation users. It redefines rich and riveting gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features utilizing devices such as the PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) system. SCE will continue to enhance the PS4 system through future system software updates.

The following features are available on PS4 at North American launch:

· Remote Play

Users will be able to access PS4 titles displayed on their living room TVs and play them on a PS Vita system over Wi-Fi networksby using PS4 Link*2*3. SCE anticipates that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play*4.

· Second Screen

Users can use the PS4 Link*2 application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation®App for iPhone, iPad, and Android™ based smartphones and tablets*5,to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation®App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on THE PLAYROOM, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation®Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

· Record, take screen shots, and upload gameplay effortlessly

The PS4 system provides dedicated, "always on" video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the "SHARE button" on PS4 Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK®4), take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game-the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system's launch in North America, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter*6.

· Broadcast and spectate gameplay

The PS4 system also enhances social spectating by enabling users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch*7 live internet streaming services. SCE provides two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation® application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation® users. Second, users can spectate friends' PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation®App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation®Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

· Play as you download

This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded*8. When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.

· Multi log-in

A maximum of 4 users can log-in to a single PS4 system simultaneously. These players can use their own save data to play games, and also earn trophies on their own Sony Entertainment Network accounts even when playing a multi-player game together on a single PS4 system*9.

· Party (Voice chat)

By using the Mono Headset bundled with the PS4 system, users will be able to chat with up to eight friends enjoying different applications or games. Furthermore, users can use Party to chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems.

· Face recognition and voice commands*10

Users with PlayStation®Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DUALSHOCK®4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the Mono Head set connected to DUALSHOCK®4, or PlayStation®Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation®Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other features*11.

· Background music player

Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service*12. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music.

· Online Multiplayer

PlayStation®Plus (PS Plus) members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.

· Blu-ray Disc™ and DVD player

Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents*13.

Furthermore, some features will not be available at launch, such as "suspend/resume mode" which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game. SCE will provide additional information about system software update version 1.50 and features available at the PS4 system's North America launch, and features that will be available after launch, in the near future.

SCE will continuously enrich services and features of the PS4 system, while striving to further expand the PlayStation platform.

*1 Download data size of system software version 1.50 is about 300MB. Although dependent on users' network environments, download of the update will take about 5~15 minutes with a broadband speed of 5~10Mpbs.

*2 The latest PS Vita system software version to be released soon will be required to use PS4 Link.

*3 Depending on network environment or titles, remote play performance may vary outside of the home.

*4 Remote Play will not be enabled on all games, including those that require peripherals such as PlayStation®Camera or certain third party peripherals.

*5 Depending on the version of OS or other conditions, users may not be able to use the application.

*6 Users must sign-up for individual accounts to use Facebook and Twitter.

*7 Users must sign-up for individual accounts to use Ustream and Twitch.

*8 Time it takes to begin playing will vary depending on game data size and network environments. Not all titles support this feature.

*9 Requirements for achieving trophies vary by titles.

*10 Voice recognition can be used without updating to system software version 1.50.

*11 Please refer to the online manual for recognizable voice commands.

*12 Offered by Sony Corporation. Visit the below website for further details.

http://www.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/music-unlimited/why-music-unlimited/

*13 At first time use, users must connect to the internet to activate this feature.
I wish they would have just put the system update on the game disks. It would have made things somewhat easier and putting the latest version of Direct X on the game is a thing that PC Games used to do.

That looks dope, I'm glad I decided on that game when Watch Dogs get delayed.

Me using the controller on my Macbook Pro. Not a great video but it shows that it works for it. I love the controller!

It's kinda smart that they decided not to street date the PS4 accessories. It reminds people that it's coming and people may just pick up some stuff out of impulse.

I think there is supposed to be a patch in 2014, but I don't remember for sure.

Tried to pick up my ds4 from my local gamestop but they wouldn't give it to me. The guy said they had to hold on to them for launch even though I already preordered and paid for it. Oh well only 3 more weeks I guess.

I was in GS earlier.  Didn't buy one but there was no hesitation on their part in regards to selling me one.  I was hoping they had one open for people to check out.  No dice.

From what I have talked to a few manager. They said that in my area they will be releasing games and parepherals 6pm 14th. I do not see the point of getting anything but the controller early is. You can't play any of the games or use the camera until PS4 launches.

I was told 6pm as well. And if you are going to get it anyways what does it matter when you get it?

I kind of like the idea of getting it early if you have games preordered at GS but have the console somewhere else (eg. amazon) I don't plan on going out on release day lol.

J7, Battlefield 4 PS4 reviews went up last night all over the web.  Also, posted this in the PS4 pre order thread, thought it belonged here as well:

Make sure you change the video resolution to 1080p or 1440p.  Graphics look incredible, hard to believe we are getting this out of a $400 machine!!  Only 2 1/2 weeks to go, super pumped!!

Agreed. Who cares what the customer can or can't do with the games prior to launch. Put 'em out, and let the customer decide. Like you said, it saves a trip on launch day if your console is reserved at a different place than your games.

So the BF3 and AC4 Physical copy's come with a code to upgrade to the Digital copy's for PS4 for $10.

On those papers it says it will require the PS3 physical copy to be in the PS4 system to play the digital copy... Anyone know if this will be required EVERY time you play the digital version or just the first time etc?

$400 machine on Launch Day. Give it 3 years and lets see how good things look. Game looks incredible for PS4 although I would have to buy the PC version of BF4 if I was, just for KB/M controls.

My Gamestop was going to let me pickup Killzone 4, but I already had it pre-ordered online.  So they have them in stock and ready to go.  It was the only PS4 game they had.

I have 2 games from dell pre-ordered but the target buy2get1 free deal is going to be better as I wont have to wait for shipping.

Of course Gamestop and retailers want to sell you the games and accessories early, that's where they make their money off of.
