Just got this PR in my email:

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) and Future US, Inc, the leading publisher of cutting-edge special interest magazines and websites, today announced that they have agreed to terms to publish PlayStation(R): The Official Magazine. The first full Future US-published issue of PlayStation(R): The Official Magazine will be the Holiday 2007 edition, on sale in late November. The initial circulation will be 300,000 copies and the frequency will be 13 issues per year. Future US will produce and oversee all the editorial and advertising sales for the magazine.

PlayStation(R): The Official Magazine will be the definitive news, previews and reviews publication for PlayStation(R) enthusiasts and users. It will offer users unprecedented access to the world of PlayStation and product special features made possible by the magazines' exclusive relationship with SCEA. Rob Smith, formerly editor-in-chief of PSM-Independent PlayStation Magazine, will be the new editor-in-chief of PlayStation(R): The Official Magazine. Future US' parent company, international special-interest media company Future plc, publishes Official Sony PlayStation Magazine in the United Kingdom and licenses it in numerous other countries.

"Future US has a strong heritage delivering cutting-edge insight into the industry, and we are looking forward to a long standing relationship to deliver unrivaled exclusive content to PlayStation fans," said Peter Dille, Senior Vice President, Marketing and PLAYSTATION(R)Network, SCEA. "We're very excited to be working with a group that is nearly as passionate about our brand as we are ourselves and we look forward to working with Future on many innovative ideas they have to create a best in class enthusiast publication."

"We are enormously pleased to be selected to publish the Official title for one of the world's great entertainment brands," said Simon Whitcombe, Publishing Director, Future US. "Future's international heritage is as a PlayStation publisher. PSM sold more than 40 million copies over its lifetime and we have published the Official PlayStation Magazine in the UK since 1995.

We're honored that SCEA recognizes the excellence and experience that we can bring to the license and to PlayStation fans all over the world."
fuck this. Bring back OPM.

So they severed ties with Ziff Davis last year citing they were moving to better things. Then we get a deal with Future US for basically the same damn thing. All they're doing is renaming that POS mag PSM with a "official" title.

It was basically the PS2 demo disc that killed OPM, Sony didn't want to make them anymore due to costs cutting. So they'd rather take their ball and go to a company that also publishes the official Xbox magazine.

I had a free subscription with PSM in 2003 and it was horrible. The reviews are written worse than Game Informer's "eh, it's okay" reviews. The layout in their mag is awful, who the fuck puts the previews after the reviews? It's like their editor just got off the short bus.

Anyway, I subscribe to PSM and somewhat expected this. I still need to re-subscribe. Rob Smith sucks though. Bring back Chris Slate.

I didn't know that. I take it then the rumors earlier this year of a company buying the gaming division fell through?

Makes me wonder what's going to happen with my remaining 7 years to EGM. Rob Smith is the editor now? If I remember right, wasn't he the editor of OXM?

I haven't read PSM in ages. Chris Slate is no longer around?

Ziff Davis, the former publisher of OPM, continues to battle financial issues, so it's understandable Sony's preference to find a more reliable company in Future, which has continued to publish OPM in Europe. Additionally, when Sony made the announcement last year, it said focus would shift to delivering content via PlayStation.com and the PlayStation Store, so we wonder what spurred this change of heart.

I hope there are BD demo discs. I was in Border's a few days ago and there was an import mag that had BD demos.

That was the Official UK mag, I think. At this point, I wouldn't spend a cent on a Blu Ray demo disc when I can just get them off PSN. Maybe in the future when demos are large and plentiful enough to make a physical disc more convienient than downloading... at least we have a choice now.

I hope not, because it would be so fucking hypocritical.
