BEWARE:
I have heard the coffee coming from pods tastes like dishwater filtered through King Kong's ass hairs.
Personally, I've always been a big fan of a French Press; it's cheap, easy to use, and makes the best tasting coffee unless you use a vac pot.
[edit] pod coffee makers are a new style of coffee maker. Instead of using perc, or drip, it uses a 'pod' of coffee contained in a filter. Many times, these are made for one-cup-at-a-time brewing. If you really want convenience, there are auto drip machines which brew a cup at a time (I got a nice one for Christmas from my bro, but forget who makes it).
Here is the problem: coffee starts losing flavor right after you grind it as the oils inside the bean begin to dry out. With canned coffee, it gets ground into a can, has the air sucked out, and gets sealed up. Which results in... an ok cup of joe. Not great, not too bad (depending on the bean and roast). But as with all mass market products, they are shooting for average, not excellence.
Pods, then, need to have the coffee ground, spit out into the filter, get smashed into the pod, then sealed in the wrapping. Which means the ground coffee is spending a far greater time exposed to the air. And, since they are the only game in town as far as who you can get coffee from (each pod is pretty much proprietary), they likely use crappy beans with a crappy roast.
