I have Pokemon Yellow. It is the "Game Boy" edition. While browsing VGRebirth (http://vgrebirth.org) I noticed an entry for the "Game Boy Color" edition. I have never seen this in real life and I see no listings for it on Ebay. The best I can find are random gifs of the box, but nothing that shows the actual game.

Was there a specific Game Boy Color release of this game?

I'm pretty sure no. If there was, I'm like you and never heard of it. And since it's a Pokemon game I don't think that's possible.

A little more digging and it appears that Nintendo had a later run of this game and they put it in a "Game Boy Color" box. It is still just a plain Game Boy game, but I assume at that point, only the GBC was available.

Well this got out of hand quickly.

In a sort of related question, I realize that regular GB and GBC games use batteries for their saves and that said batteries die after a number of years. What's the deal with N64 and GBA games? Do they use batteries or flash memory for save games?

Well, my NES game batteries were still working perfectly fine after 15 years (until I sold my collection), so I hope the few GBA games which do use batteries have equal power.
