Poll question for you all!

CAGiversary!
My original Xbox just crapped out on me the other day after two years of use (dirty disc errors galore) and yes it had a Thomson drive in it of course. I had the Bestbuy replacement plan with it, and luckily I was able to return it for a brand new one! I got the new one home, and of course I got another bloody Thomson!!! My new one was made on 3-1-04, so it is only like 7 weeks old!! I did purchase another 2 year plan with this new one, so I will be covered again for a full 2 years. My question however is this: should I take this one back right away and try to get one with either a Philips or Samsung drive, or should I just keep this one and play it till it craps out? Your opinions and input is much appreciated!! Thanks!

E.---

keep it, it works fine, and it will continue to work fine u have the new revision of thomsons so be happy :)

What you guys are saying is only speculation though... do you have any proof the new Thomsons are any better at all? All I know is that Philips and Samsungs are/were superior to Thomsons--I have already had a Thomson crap out on me!! I'm not discounting what you guys are saying about the newer Thomsons, I would just like some sort of proof to back up your statements.

bah, i see the same thing over and over again. Many places just say it was a few batches of thompsons that caused issues, and everyone had a mass hysteria over htis being the cause of all their problems.
I have a launch day Xbox with the Thomson drive and I've never had a problem.
ditto

I bought my Xbox like 6 months after launch and mine has a Thomson. I rarely ever have any problems. I have had like maybe 3 games give me DDE's once and awhile (which are THUG, SSX3, and True Crimes) when trying to boot them, but I would just open the cd tray and close it again and BAM it works fine.

Other than those three games, I haven't had one problem with my Thomson (knock on wood).
I still don't understand how you tell what make your DVD drive is ?
Samsung has two holes in the DVD tray when it pulls out.

Philiips has large concentric ovals extending along the inner hole of the tray.

Thomson is similar to phillips but the oval is much tighter

You know, I would just take it back anyway during the initial 30 days, that way you wouldn't get screwed out of the extended plan you bought. Two years sounds great, but if/when it breaks in two months, and then your second one breaks in 31 days -- far fetched, but possible -- then you're screwed. I have a unit (my second Xbox ... first one failed in less than a year -- RLOD (red light of death)) with a Thomson drive in it which was purchased only about six months ago. When I bought it, the guy at Circuit City swore the drives came with a firmware revision, but I started getting dirty disc errors first only on EA games after about two months, and now it happens with any game I pause for more than like a second, and sometimes it takes me four or five tries to get a game started at all. Believe me, a faceless corporation like Best Buy would not hesitate to take advantage of you if the shoe were on the other foot. Put it this way: the potential cost of you returning any product you buy from them is built percentage-wise into their operating budget, and into the pricing of most of their products. Is buying two Xboxes in your operating budget? If you have a chance of getting a preferred drive with an early preventative return, I say go for it. Bill Gates would make back the lost $150 while sitting on the can tomorrow morning.

So you lost all of your save games? I guess you could have transfered them all to a memory card, expensive as that would have been. What did you do? start all over?

I bought a memory card (8mb) for $30, and it only held three of my game saved files, because it only holds 500 blocks, so basically I lost 2 years of game saves, probably about 35 games worth of saves I lost!

You mean I only get to exchange it once with the extended warranty? If that is the case, you are correct, it's a no-brainer to take it back!! Since I purchased the extended warranty, they still honor the stores 30 day warranty right? Or does the extended warranty overshadow the regular 30 day store one? I'm a bit confused now!

As long as you take it back within 30 days, they should still keep the extended warranty intact for your new Xbox, because the extended warranty doesn't kick in until after the initial 30 day return policy that they offer on just about all of their products (except for like digital cameras and computers, I believe).

I am still on the fence whether or not to take it back. I kinda feel like a liar taking it back when it's not broken, but on the other hand, I have paid good money for these Xbox systems, and all the hardware and games I have bought, i feel I should be able to own one with the best components. Most people who voted in my poll seem to think I should stick with the Thomson (so far anyway). Hmmmm.....

I think you should keep it and the first time that you get some kind of error, then take it back. For all you know, it may hold up this time.

Well for the record, the question in this thread is purely opinion--whether or not I should keep this new Thomson Xbox. The subject of the three drives is a very old subject, and we all know which is the best, but that is not the subject of this particular thread. This was just me asking all of your opinions on the subject, to help with my ultimate decision--and thanks again to everyone who has voiced their opinions, I really do appreciate it!!
