Whatever you call them these days. Most people just say "IPOD". What-have-you.

I'm looking for a decent player that I can use with walking/jogging/biking/sitting in the car.

I listen to NPR so Am/fm tuner is optional. Not that important.
Don't care about image storing. Don't care about video watching.

I have huge hard drives at home so I don't need a big storage capacity.

Most important
1) Ease of Use
2) Durable
3) Good screen
4) Easy to transfer & delete songs
5) Able to pump out decent sound for that Joy Division bass line yo.
6) Cheap Ass Gamer price (I'm willing to wait for a slick deal...so to speak).
I guess to give a ball park price figure we'll start it at $150 new.

I am doing this thread quickly because I might possibly get my tax rebate tomorrow : ).

Thanks guys.

I don't know what kind of storage you want, but I have a 4GB Sandisk Sansa that I bought on Woot for $35, and I bought an 8GB MicroSD for like $10, so I got 12GB for less than $50.

Get the new ipod nano. 8gb only$150, 16gb $200.
real easy to use. made for jogging with the nike attachment tells you info on your running. screens nice and cases to match anything like shoulder strap and very durable.

Score an older Rio Karma - I've had mine for six years, have beaten the living hell out of it, and it runs like a champ. 20GB's, discontinued, but can be found pretty cheap on eBay if I recall. Not Mac compatible, but it'll play every sort of music file you throw at it (FLAC, OGV, MP3, WMA), and the built in equalizer is pretty solid for fine tuning.

Really the new ipod nanos are great but a little pricie. Take a look at the zunes. But ipods are damn easy to use and the itunes ipod thing goin on between them is great.

Sansa Fuze 8gb is my favorite. Got mine for $52, plus my 8gb Micro card, $67 total for 16GB of storage. Plays music, video, radio, does voice recording, etc. Great little player, I'd suggest the a screen protector with it though, as the screen is easily scratched. With a good screen protecter though, there is no need to worry.

Put me on board with the Sansa people....most bang for your bucks and you can increase storage with a MSD slot....so 16gbs for 60 bucks?? thats way better than an Ipod.

I cant really comment though. I have an 80gb Zune. I need high capacity.

Consider a no name off brand unit. Fry's recently had an 8 GB model for under $50. The bells and whistles may be a bit lacking compared to the big brands but the essential functions are all there and the price is hard to beat.

Thank you, I don't mind a little ebay digging. Thanks for your first-hand impressions.

That sounds like a pretty good bang for da buck.

In the past I owned one of the original IPODs. It was fine for listening and lasted a while but I was infuriated with the Itunes exclusivity BS in that you couldn't just use the thing to transfer files like a portable drive. I don't know if they've changed that.

Then I had an iRiver for a while, can't remember which model. It lasted for a while and eventually wouldn't boot up anymore. It could be used for a portable HD so to speak.

Those were both $200-400 and I just think that today there are much more affordable options. I'm out of the dorm and don't have access to DC++ you know so I am not stock piling crap music like I used to. I understand that you only need those albums that you regularly listen to and that you don't have to have your whole library in your pocket. It's nearly pointless.

Plus, I've been getting into vinyl...well I was until my belt went ka-put.

Thanks for the comments thusfar. Keep them coming.

You just can't get any more simple for ease of use than the sony walkmans!! Great units, small, good sound very nice user interface, fm tuner, video, plus I belive they might have the longest battery life of most all of the portable devices.

I have the nwz-e435f walkaman, I like it just as much as my ipod nano and ipod touch (plus I ebayed it brand new for 50 bucks!) The nano is too bulky compared to the sony for running, and the touch is too expensive to be a serious every day knockaround unit like the sony. And the sony does everything the ipods do (not the apps and stuff like the touch obviously) and it has a built in tuner.

Ah, I was going to suggest an iRiver, as I'm using my old dusty one right now. I know what you mean about the HD not working correctly though. My ex dropped it on the floor once (many years ago) while it was transferring files, and it never worked quite right after that. But hey, I just picked it up again and it gets the job done.

Also, don't support that Joy Division Zune bullshit. That is NOT Joy Division.

The Zen Vision: M has my vote. The ability to drag and drop music, pictures and movies onto the player like a hard drive is fantastic. FM tuner with the option to record whatever is streaming is also really handy. Then it has the amazing screen and all the other widgets you need (microphone, simplicity, etc..)

I've had the 30GB Creative Vision: M for a couple of years as well and love it. Decent battery life (not for video though) good screen, good sound quality, FM radio tuner, easy to load and use etc. etc.

When I purchased mine (in the way long ago) it had the best output quality of the MP3's on the market. I don't know if that still holds true but you might want to look into it as well.

Think it's worth getting one used? I'm wondering if those internal batteries will die out...don't want to be unlucky.
