Hi all,

I'd like to preface this by saying I did a search for "ipod" and didn't come up with any relevant threads on the first page of results, so apologies if this is a duplicate thread.

I'm currently in China (where the device will be ordered, keep this in mind please) and I'm in the market for a portable device that I can watch my videos (usually American TV Shows, anime, or the occasional movie) while on the go. This will be on buses, or in a taxi, or at my work during down time.

I currently have a DS Lite that I brought with me from America before I left, and honestly I don't really use it that much while on the go. Maybe because I only have 2 games for it.

I want to know which would be the better option: I'm told that ipod touch will go on sale here at the end of the month, and I looked at some game shops and found psp-2000s. I don't know the prices of either here, so that's irrelevant I think. Just want something that will have a great screen, long battery life, durable, and something I'm able to use back in the States when I return.

If it matters, I currently use a PC desktop.

edit: Forgot to mention, most of the shows are encoded in either xvid/divx/h.264
edit2: I'll see if I can go down to the shop with my girlfriend tomorrow and have her ask where the PSPs come from. A lot of them I've found are Japanese. I'll have her ask for prices too. Since she's Chinese, she can speak to them :p

Thanks,
vpr

Sorry if this goes out of the scope of your question, but I considered both and probably going with an Archos. It's more out of laziness that I don't want to spend time converting my files to a common format needed for either the Apple or PSP, and want it more of a drag and drop. (plus the hard drive space, which dwarfs both PSP and Ipod Touch - in their current incarnations)

if you are looking for 'just' a video player, id go with the touch for its memory space
but i agree with greydt....... the converting is a major turn off for me to watch anything on my psp or ipod
Not thinking about that 'issue' do you still feel the psp is better?
With the PSP, your buying a music & video player, web browser, and game machine. If you have any interest in playing games, I'd go with the PSP.

iTouch.

It has music/video, a FAR SUPERIOR web browser, etc...

The main selling point is it's far more portable than the PSP is lol..

Which screen has a better quality? I know the PSPs is a wee bit bigger. I think that the ipod touch's resolution is a little higher (480x320 vs. 480×272 for the psp) but is that going to show that much of a difference?

Also which one has better battery life for viewing video?

I'd bet that the iPod Touch has better battery life, but that is just speculation on my part.

As far as the screen, the iPod Touch's screen has higher dpi, which means it looks crisper and sharper than the PSP, although it is smaller. Personally I was extremely impressed the one time I saw the iPhone screen (same as the iPod Touch) at an Apple Store. It was extremely crisp, and fantastic.

Personally I would choose the touch because if you are going to mainly use it for videos I think it will be better than the PSP. First of all it's more portable. Second I think it will have superior battery life (especailly if you ever will use the PSP's UMD drive for videos). Third, given its integration with iTunes, I think it would be much easier to get video content onto it vs. the PSP which will probably require re-encoding (?). And finally fourth, the sharp screen.

I have been thinking of upgrading my 2nd generation iPod (w00t) to the iPod touch but for me the deal breaker is that currently the storage capacity is too low for my tastes, and it does not have the email functionality as the iPhone does. If it has wireless capability I see no reason why they shouldn't include email capability onto it too. I will see what the 2nd generation iPod touch brings.

But this gets away from your intended uses.

Well, it comes down to if you want video and music, or games as your main source of entertainment on the machine. For me, it's games, so the obvious pick is the PSP Slim. It's great though that i can watch video and listen to music on the PSP as well, and at $199, that's a pretty good deal.

Got my girlfriend to call one of her friends - converting the prices to American dollars, they're asking more for them here than in America. an 8gb ipod touch they want about $335 for and the psp slim they want $198 (just the system).

Mind you they normally overcharge foreigners, but this was a Chinese girl asking.

I might be able to get them cheaper, as bargaining is always an option here, but I feel that those prices are way out of skew for something that's MADE here too...

I've never really been into the PSP, I played burnout and lumines a few times on friends systems, but nothing rally stood out. The only thing currently that holds my interest is Crisis Core, and maybe some of the FF remakes (I think they're on PSP). If only they'd put Chrono Trigger/Cross on the PSP I'd jump all over it.

Really, I want something that is highly portable, has a long battery life, and is able to play as many formats as possible. I'm not a huge fan of itunes - is this the sole way of transferring video to the itouch? Since they're only TV shows, I don't mind re-encoding (if I must that is) since they're 40 mins without commericals. That doesn't take too long.

Does anyone own both systems and can give me their opinion on the screen?
