Possible PS2 DRE?

I just got the game Atelier Iris from Gamefly. When I throw it into my PS2, I will get past the start screen and the Playstation 2 logo, but after that, the screen goes black and I just hear my PS2 spinning the disc.

Is this the dreaded DRE people talk of, or could this be a problem with the disc?
Have you tried other games to see if it does the same thing?
It's a possibility that it could be just the game...
No other game I have, including the other game I bought from Gamefly gave me the same problem. Also, do you mean the game itself, or the disc?

No, that sounds like a bad disc. If it's DRE, it won't even show the PS2 logo. It'll just go straight to a screen that says DISC READ ERROR just like that, caps and all

Ok, I'll talk with gamefly tomorrow and get a return on this.

Well, I just went to EBGames and had them test it on their PS2. The game worked. Which begs the question, what is going on with my PS2 where a game that works on another system won't work on mine?

Could the lens need cleaning?
turn on the diagnosis mode for you PS2 and then see if the game works
can you go a little more in-depth with what that means?
whats the model number of your ps2? it wouldnt hurt to put a lens cleaner in your system.
Also, are the slim ps2s supposed to be good, or should I go for a larger PS2?

i doubt its DRE, those are good models, try a lens cleaner and clean the disc

to get into daignosis mode:

1. turn on the system with no disc inside

2. press triangle when the menu opens up.

3. choose one of the options by hitting X (i forgot the name of which one it is, but when you see "Diagnosis Off" you're in the right place)

3. Select Diagnosis with the X button and turn it to on.

4. Exit back to thte main menu and put in your game disc....

5. see if it works.

if it works, then all should be fixed (though you may have to do this every time you play the game), if not, call sony about it.

I just cleaned the lens, and I just turned on auto-diagnosis. Neither worked. So, I'll talk to Gamefly tomorrow and have them switch the game out. If the second game that I get doesn't work, I'm going to just exchange my PS2 for another one.

Also, are the slim PS2s supposed to suffer from any sorts of problems, or are they the most stable PS2s around?

I had a problem similar to this, the game would start up and the screen would go black after the Dolby logo, the only way I could get the game to work was to take my memory card out until it got to the title menu. Then I could pop it back in and load my game.
