Post the stories you have of buying new consoles on launch days!

I got my Sega Saturn at launch...I walked into a Toys R Us, and to my surprise (and everyone else's for that matter), the Saturn was released several months early! At $400! So, after begging my family, and throwing in the little bit of money I had saved from my birthday, I went home with a shiny new Saturn to put next to my 32x... >_>

I also picked up a Playstation at launch...which is a far less interesting story, as I had it reserved...but I do still have the discs that came with the initial reservation. One is a developer's demo, the other is a Sony music sampler.

I picked up an N64 at launch too, w/o reserving it, at a K-Mart. It was hard to find it in stock at the time, but luckly that K-Mart had one left.

I got my Xbox on launch day, without reserving it. That morning, I woke up and said, "I have the money, I want to buy an xbox". I drove all over, hit maybe 20 stores, and NOTHING! Sold out everywhere (this was about an hour after stores opened). I found a Circuit City that hadn't finished unloading a truck yet, so I waited around with a crowd of people, and actually gone one at launch! The problem is, they were forcing me to buy a bundle! I didn't have that extra $100+ on me, so I had to call my family to run me some extra cash. I was forced to by NFL Fever, Project Gotham, an extra controller, and stragey guides for both games. That afternoon, I went to an EB with NFL Fever. I knew I couldn't return it at Circuit City for Halo, as the recipt said it was a bundle. So I said to the manager at the EB (who was swamped with people due to the xbox), "Hey, my girlfriend did this great thing for me and bought me an Xbox, the problem is, I wanted Halo and not NFL Fever. I don't want to ask her for the recipt, because she will get upset thinking she did the wrong thing, and probably start crying and everything, so do you think you can switch this for Halo?" And he did it!

only time I ever waited was for a cube. I went to Walmart the night before it was going to be released. I got there like mid afternoon and there was already like 10 people there. I had my friend drive since I lacked a car. Well they were selling a few things already and I bought rogue squandron and tony hawk 3. I remember rumors were about a golden cube or some crap and everyone got excited. It was a good time though, got to shoot the shit with a ton of old nintendo heads. Then at 12:00 am they sold me my cube and I went home and played it for a couple of hours.
 
N64: I was still young at the time and I convinced my dad to get it for my brother and I as an easter gift (my brother didnt even want it). We called around to see who didnt take preorders and The Wiz was the only place. They said it was first come first serve so we got there really early and got the 1st of 2 that they had :). I got Mario 64. My brother liked it too in the end, especially when more games came out.

Dreamcast: Had mine preodered (I was the biggest preorder at Babbages) so I just woke up early before school and had my mom bring me and a friend over to pick it up. It was a huge pain in the ass having to sit through school knowing what was waiting for me!

Gamecube: Didnt preorder, heard there was going to be a shortage. Found a 24 hour walmart about an hour away. Talked my dad into coming with me and a friend who was also going to get one. Got there around 10ish and there was already a good 20 people in line (most parents with little kids, i found it odd). Had a pretty good time sitting in the pilliow isle and what not. Got my cube and some games that I hadnt already picked up along with a memory card and a controller. Got home and played luigi's mansion for a bit and went to bed.

Xbox: Got it in the mail from Wal-Mart ;) Doing the same with the 360.

DS: Walked into EB and picked up my preorder around lunch time.
 
The PS2 was the only system I got at launch. I wanted one bad and had sold my Playstation a few months earlier to help fund my PS2 purchase. I also got an advance of a couple hundred for Christmas and my Birthday from my mom. My friend Matt had started camping out at Target at about 9pm the night earlier. It was a cold night so I was like screw it I am not gonna freeze my ass off for a Playstation. Well the night went on and I couldn't sleep in anticipation. At about 4 am I knew I couldn't sleep and got up and started the search. At Walmart, Circuit City, Media Play, there were huge lines of people. I drove away in disgust. Then an idea hit me. What about the Base Exchange on the Base was supposed to be getting some. I had called the week before and they were expecting around 5 systems. Well I drove on the base at about 5 in the morning. I got to the BX and couldn't believe my luck- One person camped out! One person! He was sleeping in a sleeping bag. I went and sat by him and he woke up and we talked about how cool it was gonna be to finally get a PS2. I was especially excited as I would be able to play my PSone games again as well as get my first dvd player. We waited until about 8 and they opened the door to the outer part with the food court. By 9 when they opened there were an extra 10 or so people behind us in line. Then came the employee from electronics who said sorry we haven't had the truck come in yet and we will give out tickets to the first 5 people in line. Everyone else groaned and turned around and left. Us 5 first people stood around in shock deciding what to do. Some wanted to stay until the truck came in and not risk not getting their system. Some of us wanted to leave and come back. I didn't have work that day and was contemplating what to do. Then the employee said the truck just came in and to hold on a minute. A few minutes later he came back with our PS2s! I looked in awe at the 5 bright blue boxes and gleefully accepted mine. I then went and picked out Street Fighter EX3 and rang out. As we were leaving the workers took our picture of us all standing together with our PS2 and later hung it on their bulletin board. I went home and checked the prices on ebay of PS2s. Holy crap they were going for $600! I only paid $300 for mine with no tax! I could double my money and get a Dreamcast and a bunch of games and get a PS2 later! I thought about it and decided "screw it I waited all night, I am gonna open this baby and play it". I did and have had it ever since. I have kept extremely good care of it and still play it today. I am glad I got mine at launch, especially today when 5 years later the price of a PS2 is still $150. So basically it has only cost me $30 a year to have it. I plan to pick up an Xbox 360 at my base exchange later this month because
A) only military have access to the Base Exchange
B) most people don't think to get one there
C) NO TAX!
 
Dreamcast was the first system I got at launch. I put the deposit down almost a year before they were out, I was one of the first ten people at my local EB. I kept bringing in old PlayStation games and putting the credit toward the DC. By the time it came out I had about $200 credit and dropped another $200 out of pocket. I was originally going to get two games, but they were running a promotion of $5 off each game if you bought three or more.

Walked out with a DC, VMU, extra controller, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone and Trickstyle. I have three friends who are also gamers and all four of us bought Dreamcasts that day. We all got together that night to play and my wife even made cupcakes with orange swirls on them.

The PS2 launch isn't nearly as fun. I put a deposit on one at EB, but I wanted to get one with my credit card points. I had a Sony card at the time, but I misunderstood the restrictions and thought I had to buy it at one of their listed retailers (which was noone who did preorders). So I let my brother-in-law take my preorder even though he already picked up two of them elsewhere. I later found out that I could get reimbursed for purchasing it at EB, so he returned it and I bought it. This was when there weren't any in site and none expected for a while.

I'm hoping to get in on the Revolution launch, as long as the price and launch lineup are good.
 
I was involved in the Zelda 2, SMB 2 NES shortage way back when. I remember going into a store and seeing 1 single copy of Mario 2, but couldn't buy it. Santa ended up coming through for Christmas though.

I remember the SNES though when it first hit. My brother and I were in College and just got a brand new CREDIT CARD!! So to try it out we went down to Toys R Us and there was a big banner hanging outside for the SNES. It wasn't there a few days eariler so we went in and charged the system. The feeling of playing Super Mario World for the first time has only been equaled by SM64 in all my years of gaming. We ended up getting Pilotwings and Sim City later that weekend, comprising the best launch lineup ever, IMO. Those 3 will be in my Revolution launch lineup as well if all goes like Nintendo says it will. We went down the following week and they were totally sold out of the system.

I usually go out and watch the launch days, and I can honestly tell you that I have never not been able to buy a system on launch day without a preorder. You have to be out within a few hours of the store opening, but I have seen / purchased every system on launch day since the SNES. I usually hit Toys R Us and Target / Walmart before 10 am. or so.
 
Nice Story... this just hype things up for the 360 for me..

Every single launch up until Nintendo 64, was never able to afford 1 until I could find one used cheap or price drop... this was hard for me since I was just a kid under the age of 13...

Nintendo 64: Mario 64 kept me up nite & day for 3 days straight, I been saving for the past 3 months for this... days came... went to ToysRus... picked it up in the morning with mario... (got the last 1 in stock) Lucky me!

Dreamcast: has it preorder at EB.. picked it up... on 9-9-99... tons of crazy people... (remember hearing a kid got rob outside the mall for his Dreamcast) it was crazy... go it with Sonic & tons of otehr games... spent close $500... *BEST launch Ever*

PS2: (wanted 1 but couldn't afford it) waited til GT3 bundle then got it...

XBOX: picked it up after playing DOA3 & Halo

DS: picked it on launch day at gamerush.. with saved credit... unhappy with launch games & the following couple months that follow.. Now DS has the killa APP...

PSP: EB preorder, waited outside for 30 mins... picked it up with need for speed... crap port, I might add... plus it had tons of DP... but for the 1st few weeks... I was the coolest guy outta all my friends... PSP= Coolness Factor...
 
me and my friend got the DS launch day. i was the only one that bought a game lol. mario.
now i have a crap load of ds/gba games.

we only bought it cuz we work in a tent outside and basicly have all day to play.

i really think that was the only system i bought at launch. everything else at launch had weak launch titles. and i bought the dreamcast SOLELY for marvel vs capcom 2 and that was a year later.

same with ps2 i knew i was gonna get one but launch titles were ok.
 
I almost forgot, the SNES. I didnt quite get it at launch but close! The local video rental store by me had them for rent when they came out so we rented one. My brother and I played through almost all of Super Mario World and then it was time to return it. My dad talked to the lady at the register and said he wanted to buy one. She said it was $299 (i think that was the launch price right?). He told her that Toys R Us had it for $150 and she said ok! I was like "Holy shit my dad is the fucking man!"

I also forgot about the Virtual Boy launch. We happened to be at my grandparents when it came out and stopped by the mall. My brother saw it in the EB as we walked by with a big crowd in there. He manged to convice my dad into getting it for us. Mario Tennis was and still is great!
 
The only system I've bought at launch was the psp, I came in in the morning an d tied up some ballons, greeted some of our regularsd, and had mine rang through. Hung around long enough to open it up and turn it on for a few minutes, and witness one of the weirdest defective returns ever ("I can't find the analog stick"...turns out he didn't get one, lol).

My PS2 was close to launch, because it was within the first week of the slimline, when I realized it was going to become difficult to find (which it was for the next couple months) I decided to just buy it outright when I could. I remember hooking it up next to my xbox and it was soooo teeny! ^_^

Unfortunately, I'll probably have to work at midnight for the 360 launch, and I had it reserved at my old store, so it will be a little while before I get to play...:cry:
 
I was in Jordan the day of the launch for PS2, so my wife being so sweet was going to walk two miles to Walmart at 2 a.m. (She didn't have a drivers license). She starts walking and a cop passes her does a U-turn and picks her up. The cop drops her off and she gets back to the electronics department and sees a line stretched back to layaway. She asks a sales clerk how many systems they have and they quote 20-30. Knowing she won't get one there and fearing I'll beat her...hahahaha... she calls a cab and goes over to our mall area on the other side of town. Lines are formed at CC and Target, so she has the cab go to K-Mart. Only 2 people in line and 8 systems at the store. She gets a ticket, #3, and right before they open the doors some guy 30 people back starts bitchin that it ain't fair that there are only 8 systems. So this really isn't my story, but more of my wife's, man I love this woman.
 
I havent waited for any systems but my mom waited for the N64 when it came out. I dont remember if it was launch day or shorly after but she waited outside of KB early in the morning with my grandmother and managed to get the N64 w/ Wave Race 64 for me. My grandmother also got one w/ Mario and donated to a charity.
 
PS2: Pre-ordered at TRU. Went to get it the morning of 10-26. At that time i couldnt drive so i asked my cousin to take me. She had this old late eighties honda. Went to TRU, we got the PS2 when got out we rushed to the fearing that we going to get robbed (our TRU was in a bad nieghborhood). When we get in the car the darn thing would not start. Didnt get home till like 2pm.

XBOX: Walked into TRU around noon without a pre-order and they had tons of them in stock.

PSP: Pre-order, had 1 guaranteed
 
When the PSOne lanch i was at home playing my SNES

When PS2 launch I was playing at PSOne

THe only console I ever got anywhere near launch was the PS2. I had my dad preorder it for my bday. DOA2: Hardcore, Timesplitters, and Madden 2001 were my first games for it. Madden blew me away.

I got a PS1 for my birthday about a year after it came out. I would have probably gotten an n64 if they hadn't been so scarce. That was the first time I can ever remember a game console being really hard to get for an extended period of time.

I got my n64 for my birthday in 1999. I had actually asked for a DC AND an n64, with my parents knowing I wanted the DC more, and the n64 was really just added to the list just in case someone wanted to buy me something big. I got the dk64 bundle, which was a green console, an expansion pack, and a copy of dk64. Man, that game sucks ass.

GameCube I just got earlier this year for $100 with a few games. Very happy with it. I also just got a DC a few months ago. I already have like 2 dozen games for it, and hope to have plenty more soon.
 
i remember getting the saturn 2 days after it came out for 100 bucks cheaper.. some dude working at a shoe store in the mall ,,,, his girfriend made him sell it so they could pay the rent ....

I bought my PSP and my DS from GameRush - just walked in on launch morning and was out in 5 minutes. During the PSP launch I went to the mall to see what was going on and EB had like 100 people in line and only 2 people working in the store. Those poor bastards believed the EB 'hype' and pre-order PSP's from them and paid the price by waiting in line for 2 hours to pick it up. I'm sure the same thing is happening with that new Microsoft console... convincing people that they will be the only ones with systems.
 
Never got a system at launch, always let my true cheapass nature shine through a wait for a price drop. As of late I've been getting a lot of games at launch though, mostly DS (Castlevania, Phoenix Wright, and soon-to-be Mario Kart).

I'll probably end up getting a Revolution at launch though.
 
Got a dreamcast on launch day, preordered it at Funcoland, had my dad come with me to pick it up and ended up with ready to rumble, sonic adventure, and umm I think Power Stone. Oh and I was given a Sega Dreamcast members only card strictly for buying the system on launch day from Funcoland, It was supposed to give some good deals off upcoming sega dreamcast stuff, but they never ended up using it. Btw I still have the card. 9/9/99

PSP I got on launch day at Best Buy. Just happened to walk in and completely forgot it went on sale that day. Was so excited I only bought the system and on my way home I remembered I needed a game..lmao, anyways I stopped at ebgames and grabbed wipeout pure.

I did get an Xbox about 1 week after launch after hunting store after store with my mom. Ended up getting one at Circuit City. They had just gotten another shipment in. Walked out with an xbox, extra controller, memory card (damit, didn't know I wouldn't need that piece of crap until I got home), and Halo.
 
My father waited for a PS2 and he was third in line, so he should have been guarunteed one, he got to know these two college guys in front of him and they were having a good time and all, and the doors opened so naturally they all took off running, my dad being pretty fast, was overtaken by this big guy who shoved him into a counter, the college guys seeing this got to the PS2's quickly and one took one off the shelf looked at it and tossed it to my dad, who somehow caught it safely, then he took one for himself, that guy who shoved my dad was so pissed, and apparently my dad was offered some good amounts of money for it, but he refused knowing we wanted one, but seeing as how it crapped out nearly a year or so later, he should have sold it and just pocketed the money....

Well the place was about an half hour away so I went early and needed to kill time so I went the the sponge bob movie (god help me) then I went to the incredibles (which rocked my socks off) Then I hit up Arbies to eat. Then I still had about 2 hours to kill so I went into Staples and played some games on there computer for an hour. 1 hour left till midnight so I wondered around in toys until midnight when of course I had to find someone to look in the back for a DS and thank god I brought a picture of it because I dont think the 80 year old would have known what a DS was. He comes walking out of the back with it in hand and at 12:21 I bought my DS and Im still loving it.
 
I'm pretty sure the first system I got at launch was the N64. But since then, I've gotten every Nintendo console at launch.

N64:
I remember we had it reserved at Toys R' Us and we got a phone call that they had it in 2 days early and we could pick it up at closing that day if we wanted to!

So we raced over and actually got it. BUT, it was then that we realized that there was no pack in game!

So we asked if we could get Mario 64, even though we hadn't reserved it.
There was ONE copy that hadn't been reserved and we got it!

So I had the N64 and Mario 64 two days before the official launch and I was the happiest kid in town! WAHOO!

GBA:
First system I ever bought with my own hard earned money. We lined up outside Target at like 6-7 in the morning and got the system and Mario Advance. Not too exciting.....

Gamecube:
Once again lined up outside Target for an HOUR before they opened. Huge crowd and then some looney drove by holding a 'cube out the window yelling "WALMART'S ALREADY SELLING THEM!". A bunch of people left to go there, but we stuck it out at Target. Got my Jet Black cube, Luigi's Mansion, Rouge Squadron, and Monkey Ball. Good stuff.

GBA SP:
I'm pretty sure I ditched school to get this one. Don't regret it one bit!

DS:
Lined up outside Best Buy with 2 buds at 6-7 AM and we bought 3 out of the FIVE DS's the store got in! Got Mario 64DS and Feel the Magic. Awesome.

Other non-launch stories:

DC:
Got DC for X-mas with Sonic Adventure and Soul Cal 1. I remember firing it up for the first time on the big screen and playing as Nightmare. Blew my mind.

PS2:
Got it for X-mas after launch (when it was supposedly impossible to find!). Ironically enough, I didn't really WANT one so I played the crap games I got (Timesplitters 1 and Orphen) for a while and then it collected dust for about 6 months before the good games came rolling out.

XBOX:
Got it for X-mas after launch. Truly surprised me as I didn't really want one, but my mom had bought it at launch day and hid it from me til X-mas! Man......my mom's awesome.

PSP:
After spring break this year, me and my friend somehow had extra money left (that we didn't spend on booze) and we're like "fuck it, lets go buy PSPs!". So we got 'em and I picked up Wipeout, Darkstalkers, and Lumines. Also bought God of War and Samurai Legend Musashi the same day. Twas an expensive day.......hahaha.
 
Most earlier consoles (NES, Genesis, SNES, TurboGrafix-16) were bought a little while after launch.

Sega Saturn - bought on day one from Babbages for $400. (ouch!) I live in one of the early-release states when it shipped quickly in the Spring before the official Fall launch.

PSX - waited until Resident Evil came out (about 1 year).

N64 - skipped a college class and drove back to my local TRU (50 min. drive) to pick up my pre-ordered N64, Super Mario 64, Pilotwings, and I think I either pre-ordered or purchased Crash Bandicoot for PSX and NiGHTS Into Dreams for Saturn the same day. It was console-mascot heaven.

Dreamcast - waited a year (already had an imported one bought on Day 1 for $600, along with Sonic and possibly Soul Caliber -- don't remember the launch titles I bought. I think that Sonic was delayed about a week for me, due to the immense demand for the title in Japan). I bought the all-black Sports Edition from Best Buy. Yum.

PS2 - see above. Purchased an imported unit on day 1 for some ungodly amount of money -- could've been 600, possibly more. The Japanese unit is still pretty fresh and new. I think I bought SSX, Fantavision, Ridge Racer 5, and a japanese golf game. I waited until Summer 2001 for the release of Twisted Metal:Black to buy a U.S. console. Purchased at CompUSA.

Xbox - my Dad went to Best Buy the day of release (I had to go to work), waited for about 10 min., and scored a unit and Halo. Two weeks later, I won another Xbox from the Taco Bell "Win It Before You Can Buy It" Sweepstakes. I'm still shocked. Halo was amazing.

The very next day after the Xbox launch (11/16), I received a package in the mail. It was my pre-ordered Gamecube bundle from ebGames.com. The system (Jet Black), Luigi's Mansion, Waverace, Madden, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, extra controller and memory card had arrived three days before the official launch day of Sunday, 11/18. I was completely floored. Never in my life had I received two brand-new consoles within 24 hours of each other. I was so happy I was numb. It still feels like it happened last week. Luigi's and Star Wars were great, but the shining moment for Gamecube didn't arrive until Metroid and Zelda for me.

PSP - ebgames brick & mortar store Midnight release. Mostly uneventful, just walked in at 11:50, waited for about 15 min, and was home by 12:30. The launch will always be defined by the pleasure of Lumines.

Xbox 360 - fully paid & pre-ordered, picking up at same ebgames where I bought my PSP. I think that I am taking off the 22nd & 23rd to eat up my massive pile of vacation time I've accrued. Gonna buy a boatload of launch titles. Perfect Dark & Kameo and must-buys, and Call of Duty 2 and others will follow.
 
PS2 - Waited in line at my local BB from the night before (10pm), and once they opened they were already sold out, they only got 35 in the store, and I was like #48. I ended up driving everywhere that day, but had no luck. 2 weeks later I was able to get my PS2 from a local Circuit City.

GC - Didn't buy at launch, waited like 3-4 months

XBOX - Didn't buy at launch, ended up getting it for xmas that year

DS - Got a week after launch

PSP - Had a pre-order at EBgames, and got it with no problems.

XBOX360 - I have a pre order on this as well at EBgames
 
Gamecube - Ended up walking right into Target and picking it up no problem the day of launch. I picked up that, Luigi's Mansion, Wave Race, and Madden 2002.

Xbox - Received it for X-mas a year after release.

PS2 - Bought off of a friend a year after it was released

DS - Got in Febuary used so I didn't have to hunt for it during X-mas.

PSP - Picked up at my GS day after launch.
 
PS2, Pre ordered 1 at media play 1 at EB, Camped overnight with 10 others at KMart. Organized a whole night of activities. 6 of us were Car freaks and two people have ps1s installed in there cars

PSP woke up at 12pm got it no problems, no lines proceeded to be an hour late to work thanks to lumines
 
Gamecube - Was out shopping, drove by a TRU on a whim. Saw the Black 'Cubes in stock, bought 1, an extra controller, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Monkey Ball and Crazy Taxi. Missed the next week's worth of classes.

PSP - Was in Florida for a buddy's bachelor party, stopped by a Target to pick up some supplies (Who forgets to pack all their toiletries? I do.). Saw a case of PSPs in stock, bought 1 and Lumines. Plane flight home was a breeze.

Can't say I've ever really stood in line for a product launch. I figure I'll end up getting a system I really want eventually and there are always enough games on my backlog to keep me busy.

Good Lord... Walmart was a half hour away so you got there 12 hours early?

Sadly (or happily?) I missed out on the launches for all my Nintendo consoles. Probably the Revolution too, unless I happen to have a vacation/sick day available on that date.

Well, he would have got there 24 hours early but was in line for Star Wars down at the Metroplex... :)
 
xbox i got xmas 2002...gifted

other than that i usually stay a generation behind on consoles due to my parents teaching me the value of money and how it doesn't grow on trees
 
DS: Showed up an hour before my shift started at CC (store opened at 10 AM, my shift started at 11 AM). Grabbed my DS along with Mario 64 DS and a screen protector kit and extended warranty (since my "defective" GBA SP paid for most of upgrading to a DS).

And a funny story relating to the XBox launch...

Showed up at CC on the day of the XBox launch as I just got a Dreamcast via eBay for $30. The store was just about to open. No line or anything. Doors opened and the manager asked if I was there for the XBox.

"Nope, I actually came to score some Dreamcast stuff." :lol:

He chuckled and said "yep, some big launch day." :lol:

I scored Shenmue, Sonic Adventure 1, a few other games I can't remember, an extra controller, and some other items for around $50ish. :D
 
XBOX: The only time I got a system at launch. I asked my dad to go pick it up for me and since it was $300, I didn't get any presents for Christmas or my birthday in January. My parents used to buy me a $50 game every time I brought home a report card with straight A's (and I would get spanked if I got anything below an A-, which thankfully only happened once) and I had to also give up my gift for the trimester's report card. I didn't get any games though and had to depend on renting the limited selection of games at the nearby Hollywood Video.
 
GBA: A friend and I went to Best Buy a half hour before it was supposed to open, and were met by a crowd of about 20 people. The manager came out and asked "Who is here to buy air conditioners!? We have a full stock in the back." When he opened the door, we both literally ran to the videogame dept along with a few other people, and we snatched up some games and a system. Fun times.

GCN: Pre-ordered it. Picked it up.
