5 years from now, what would be the suikoden2 of ps2? you know, the games that will reach over 100 bucks on ebay.

rez
stella deus: gates of eternity

unlimited saga.... 10 years from now we will look back and wonder why we thought this game was a piece of trash.. It will be a masterpiece then : )

remember there is always reprint.
Also there will be huge demand for certain non GH factory sealed games.
also suikoden 2 isnt really a good exaple. at one point this game can be find even used easily for a while.

PTO 4 will be pricey (nowhere near $100 though), as will Guitar Hero with controller, Growlanser deluxe pack, Firefighter FD 18, and maybe Shadow Hearts or Wizardry.

Dark Horse pick: Culdcept.

Seems like you can get it between 10-20 bucks on ebay still. This game is so awesome, but word spreads slowly because it doesn't sell on graphics or fast-action gameplay.

I highly doubt there will be any uber-rare games for the PS2.
There will be games having a disproportionate amount of demand and cause even an uncommon game to appear scarce and valuable, but due to the realities of the system and production costs, you aren't going to see the sort of one offs from tiny developers that tend to become the hugely uber-rare games that demand high dollars.

However, now that it would be possible for a small dev to make a limited run and get a good enough return, it would be games coming out right around now (back to maybe a year or so ago) until they cease production of the PS2 that would be the most likely candidates. All you'd need is a niche game to come out now that has a modest print run, and then gets a major spike in demand in a few years.

Traditionally the rarest games for a system are the ones that come out at the very end of a systems life, when newer systems are out. Nobody buys those last games for a system and they arent produced in large numbers to begin with. Of ocurse the PS1 had to buck this trend by having tons of shovelware crap come out for it even to this day.

I hope we start to see alot of qucik and dirty releases of japanese games. Like that budget game series that has the game where you attack the giant bikini girls with a helicopter, or the one where your a cowgirl stripper fighting off hordes of zombies. If these kinds of games can get released for the PS2 in 06 or even 07, they will come out in relatively small numbers and should remain rare. They same way XS games gave us some cool japanese games wrapped up in a bargain bin US package.

That would be true for a system that just die out, but the backward comparable will mean that it will easily stil have games even in near future. But the xbox is lacking those niech Japanese games that will likely be in high demand. Also remember games like arc the lad collection is easily found, but lunar is much harder.

as for XS game, Castle Shikigami 2 is a very difficult to find in any B&M store, but online it wont cost more than $15 shipped.

I see Castle Shikigami 2's at every used store around here for around $8. Wal-Mart used to have it new they might still have it in fact I haven't checked. The Katamaris are everywhere but they will probably never hit uber rock bottom.

I don't see anything hitting Valkyrie Profile or Suikoden II prices but there are a bunch that will hang in the $40-50 range for far too long.

I would pick any game that is really good, had some unique gameplay, or licencing, and had a very small distribution.

My picks

All "marvel" capcom titles.
Culdcept
Rez
Gitaroo Man
Firefighter FD 18

If we're going rare, just take anything with print below 10,000 copies. Like Tsugunai: Atonment or Dual Hearts (both Atlus, go figure).

Well not Gitaroo Man anymore, reprint you know.

some games got reprint and still remain rare.

I see Castle Shikigami 2 at alot of B&M stores and Obscure and Culdcept too. All can be had for less than $10.

Games in my area that seem to be rare outside of the obvious ones like Rez, are that Firefighter game, and Robot Alchemic Drive. Ive only ever seen that twice in a store, and the second time I bought it! lol

What about Ring of Red? *has sealed copy*

It's a fantastic game, and a cult favorite, but I can't see it becoming rare as people have been able to get it for $10 for several years. Also - it was one of the first titles on the PS2, which probably boosted it's sales at the time, thus leaving us with a surplus of copies.

Magna Carta: Tears of Blood, if Atlus doesn't reprint it. With all the terrible reviews it's getting plus it's coming out the same week as Dragon Quest VIII no ones going to pick it up. A year later everyones going to realize how sweet it is.

Trapt
Magic Pengel the Quest for Color
Graffiti Kingdom (was already in short supply on launch day)
Yanya Caballista: City Streeskater
Cookies and Cream

I own all those but Trapt and can easily see these being uber rare down the line of the next-gen life.

I was going to say the same thing. I had never heard about this game but it was cheap at EB one day and the few people that had played said it was great. It is probably one of my most played PS2 games. I have clocked in about 200 hours in the game which is an insane amount for me.

It's hard for any game to have achieve "Suikoden 2" status. The game doesn't just have to have a low print run, it also has to be a good game.

Rez is the most likely one to stay rare and sought after (if it doesn't get reprinted). Nice graphics, simple and easy gameplay, and low print run.

Culdcept is so obscure practically no one knows about it, maybe for the hard core strategy gamers. I found the battles to be tedious and very slow; it takes an hour - 2hrs. to finish one battle. Dual Hearts is too kiddy, not to mention it has ugly graphics. No one will want it. Wizardry was also boring and I can't see anyone paying top dollar for that game. People shouldn't equate Atlus to being rare or good.

How about:

Guilty Gear X & X2
Gradius III & IV
Fatal Frame I & II
Ferrari F355 Challenge (lower run than rez?)
Sprintcars: World of Outlaws
Street Fighter EX3
Super Bust a Move 2
ALL THE SMT GAMES

Guilty Gear X is a very hard to find sealed, but used copy are very common. That likely wont change anytime soon.

Maybe it's just X2 that I'm thinking of then...

To be honest, it'll probably be some obscure Japanese game that only had 5000 copies or whatever printed, rather than any game that was released over here. There's rare Japanese games that go for $1000-3000

Darkstalkers Chronicle Dreamcast has a print of exactly 5,000 copies, but it never go for that much.

If Dual Hearts becomes rare and valuable, I'll quit gaming. I seriously think its the worst game I've played in years. Flawed gameplay mechanics, horrible characters, and it runs at 10-15 FPS.

Totally forgot about Marvel vs. Capcom 2. There's no chance that it'll get reprinted so it's got that going for it. The only thing is that I think Capcom's fading in the minds of gamers who play fighting games (only people who grew up with Street Fighter may want it). I wonder if today's younger gamers even know/care about Street Fighter.

Maybe the non-modded San Andreas ones? I can see people wanting to hold onto those, if they have them. Taiko Drum Master, Guitar Hero, Space Channel 5 maybe? Perhaps, Stolen and Obscure (which I want very badly and if anyone has it, let me know), Indigo Prophecy, Trapt. Shin Megami games maybe?

Disney Golf, Unison, PTO 4, SMT (not so sure anymore since ATLUS reprinted Rhapsody and Persona 2 they WIILL do it again :bomb: ), Naval Ops, Ring of RED (sealed), Metal Gear Solid Substance (original, sealed), Kingdom Hearts (original Sealed), Shadow Hearts ( just for nach  ) REZ, Gitaro-man (sealed, original).

GameQuestDirect did you take a note? fuck

I'll add some later as I sort through them..All of the above mentioned games I'm putting up on ebay this weekend. It's so hard to let it go, but the tiime has come :whistle2:|

I think its going to be the opposite. The new censored San Andreas will be the rare one. Honestly, who didnt already have that game who wanted it when the hot coffee thing broke? They must have sold millions of copies of the original. Theres no way they are going to sell that many copies of the newer version.

I know these are old examples, but for the NES, the grey verison of Zelda is way rarer than the gold cart original, and the metroid reprint with the yellow box and label is way rarer than the black label original too...
Shadow Hearts ( just for nach  )
Damn straight!

You think you're making fun of me, but just you watch. Shadow Hearts will have a value upwards of $300 for a sealed copy. We'll see who laughs last joke boy.

It will never happen. You better sell them :p GQDirectmyass will reprint it or I'll be 500 years old. :cold:

I'm selling my collection. I have a note for you on my Fire Emblem auction.

And Shadow Hearts are going 1...2....3... next week....

Well he's talking about the Suikoden 2 of the PS2, Suuikoden 2 being less rare than Suikoden 1 but far more valuble so the concept of rare as anything other than monetary value is already lost.

My pick is Ephemeral Fantasia and Wizardry. Both unique quirky RPGs will smaller printing runs, based on PS1 trends that seems to be one of the more definate characteristics of rare RPGs.

there is a difference between rare games that cost about $20 for a used copy but will have 1 or two listing at any time and a "rare" game that cost $100 but will have 20 listing at any given time. In a sense it will depends if you look at rare as hard to buy a copy or paying a lot for a copy.

If we go by years... since Suikoden II came out in 1999 (6 yrs ago), I think the Shin Megami Tensei games (Nocturne and DDS 1&2) will be the highly sought after games for the PS2. People are already starting to consider Nocturne extremely rare (although I find them all the time). But, in 5 or 6 years I think they will be PS2's Suikoden II.

I think the difference is that the $20 game with 2 copies available is rare, and the $100 game with 20 copies available is 'in demand'.

Lots of rare games suck, and the only people that get them are collectors looking for completion. Those games may always stay cheap, because even tho they are rare, there is not much demand. Some games have very large print runs, and are readily available, but command high prices because everyone wants a copy. The high price doesnt automatically qualify it as 'rare'.

Just going by NPD numbers, Killer7 is pretty rare, I think there have been 10K sold on PS2 to date (though there are more on shelves). It's also the inferior version, because the more common GC version also has hardly any load times. Still, the fact that it's a really stunning game in many ways makes me favor it over numerically scarcer titles like Virtua Quest and Spartan: Total Warrior.

Also, I think a lot of people are waiting for price-drops on Psychonauts, but people are going to be in for a surprise when the game disappears rather than dropping in price, because very few people ever bought it.

My pick is pretty obvious : Madden 2006

Seriously, I'd pick RAD because I love it, and I haven't seen a copy in about a year. I'll probably see one used next time I go to Gamestop.

well if u want a collectors item down the road, snag a sealed copy of the Bouncer, thats bound to be very rare (mainly as sealed) and sought after due to the fact its both a squaresoft title and a launch title, i am still kicking myself from passing up on a sealed copy for $25 a couple months ago
