Uh, theoretically, could I just put $5 down for the preorder, get SH1, and then walk away from the deal? (I probably won't do that, but I might if I'm broke when SH2 finally comes out.)

If you found the deal at your local gamestop, yeah, you could probably. Online though, they'll have your credit card info which they can charge. Or they may just charge you the full $50 before they send out Shadow Hearts 1.
 
Giving this a friendly bump as right now Shadow Hearts II w/ Shadow Hearts has free 2-day shipping at GameStop.com. Also, the order lists Shadow Hearts as shipping on 8/16...
 
Shadow Hearts is an awesome game. The battle system is really cool and the cutscenes are great. The translation is kind of "interesting" but funny. If I didn't have it, I'd reserve it
 
That sounds like a fantastic deal, but I already got Shadow Hearts over a year ago at Meijer for $9.99. I know of a friend that would like the first, so maybe I should still preorder.
 
Most likely it's new. I'm sure that Midway cranked out some additional promo copies for Gamestop to give away
 
This deal is also at Ebgames.com now, so you can be reassured that this will definately be hitting other stores such as Gamerush and Gamecrazy, and perhaps even CC and BB.
 
Great Deal. thanks Dead of Knight, hope it becomes B&M though. Ive heard more about Sh then Final fantasy X, so I hope they are both good.
 
Wow, this bump comes just as I learned at work today that this will also be at GAMESTOP B&M! So those who don't want to order online will be able to do so instore too. :D
 
This is a great deal, though I won't be preordering it, it's still a great deal to get a whole game for free.

Actually, if it's at CC and a promo item it will ring as .01. Like the promo Mortal Kombat DA does now, that was a promo item that's free with Psi Ops (or something)
