Ever since I bought my two drives from new egg 2 years ago I noticed the read speeds where really slow even though they had a high read/write speed.
I have the LG GGW-H20L

and the LG gh20ns15 dvd r/w drive.

Anytime I install a dvd rom game it can take about up to 45 minutes to install. Anytime I back up a sd-dvd movie for my zune , it takes up to 20 mins to extract the data using dvd decrypter or any other program. I have checked the read/extraction settings for the programs and they are set to either 16x or max or auto, yet I get read speeds of up to 4.4x at best.

These are both SATA drives and I thought they would be faster than IDE drives but I am not seeing a big jump.

So my question is, is there a program to monitor/tweet drive speeds for my system to see if it's been boggled down?

thanks

Tweaking read and write speeds I believe can only be done by flashing the hardware to make it think it's a different drive with faster speeds (which I don't really think is recommended). I don't think there is a piece of software that will essentially let you overclock your drive.

Well something is going on if my top read/extraction speed is 4.4x...yea it's quite but ultra slow. Something must be bogging down the drive speed/data transfer and I can't figure out what it is.

You either have system issues somewhere, or the disc drives have dist inside of them.
The best method I use for maintaining my disc drives is taking them apart and airdust the laser assembly. Dust gets trapped below the lens and mirror set frequently if you live in a dusty environment.

Try putting the disc drive into another computer and doing a speed test on the drive with a free benchmarking tool (use Google lol)

Both of the tasks you mention are very CPU/HDD intensive. You sure it's a drive issue?

You might check your system for SecuROM. It's had a history of screwing up optical drives.

thats what i was thinking, it might not be the drive, it could be the hdd, cpu, ram. anyone of those things could be limiting those processes.

I am VERY sure that SecurRom is on my system. I have a number of CNC games on there and I know they have SecurRom on them. How do I check if I have more and how safe is it to remove it?

Used to be a site that delt with CD drives and testing and finding out the fastest and ranking them. Had graphs and charts and roms to flash drives with and such.

Really forgot what it was....

But yeah, rom flashing, making your drive something else....

Did you check your ram ?
a bad stick will cause the problems you described.
the zune encoding does take a lot of cpu hp on older cpu's.

Installing a game and decrypting a dvd should not take that long or slow down the system.

as for Suckurom look at this http://reclaimyourgame.com/

cpu hp????

Do you think it may be related to the SATA settings for the drives? All my drives, including the hard drives are SATA. None are in RAID configuration. How do I find out the SATA speed settings within windows for each drive? My CPU is the intel Quad Core 9300 2.5ghz chip.

hp = horsepower and I know that a 9300 quad has plenty of it so that's not the problem. If the all of your drives are showing up then your settings should be OK. Most SATA settings in the bios are RAID AHCI IDE. If your drives have been working until recently and you have not been screwing around with the bios then it should be fine. Regardless your drives should be set to AHCI unless stated other wise in your mother board manual.

Let me ask you again did you check your ram?
Download this .ISO , Burn to a CD , boot to CD, run Memtest86, wait.
If it does not pass the then run one stick at a time.
