Sierra Entertainment Unleashes Prototype

Sierra Entertainment and Radical Entertainment Raise the Bar on Open-World Games

Sierra Entertainment, a division of Vivendi Games, today announced Prototype™, a completely new kind of open-world game, featuring a rich story line of conspiracy, deception and deadly shape shifting action.

Developed by Radical Entertainment, a critically acclaimed developer of open-world games, Prototype tells the story of Alex Mercer - a man haunted by his past, fighting a secret war in New York City. As the action spirals out of control, a conspiracy tied to his origins threatens the future of mankind itself. Mercer’s amazing shapeshifting powers allow him to become an exact replica and steal the skills or powers of anyone who crosses his path.

Prototype debuts on the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, Microsoft's Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system and PC in summer 2008.

“Radical Entertainment has a strong pedigree of critically acclaimed, best-selling open-world games, and Sierra Entertainment is excited to see them craft an original game that has already fired-up the imaginations of press and gamers alike,” said Martin Tremblay, president, Worldwide Studios for Sierra Entertainment. “Prototyperepresents the strength of Sierra Entertainment’s internal studios and our commitment to creating original and exciting games.”

“Radical Entertainment set out to create the most dynamic video game character ever imagined. From free-form movement to over-the-top combat action; Prototype can climb or wall-run across any surface, jump 30 stories high, and destroy anything that crosses his path,” said Kelly Zmak, president of Radical Entertainment. “Our team at Radical has built upon the technology that drove our previous best-selling games and now has the freedom to dream big and imagine a powerful character in a sprawling city like New York, cloaked in a conspiracy and ripped from today’s headlines.”

I read the article on GameInformer last month, this game looks fucking sweet, its like a Crackdown type game, and you can shapeshift into anything and anyone you kill, and you absorb their abilities. I can't wait to see how this turns out.

This caught my eye too. The guy in a hood look feels generic, at first glance it made me think Assasin's Creed. I almost think he lacks a bit of character without a distinct face. Gameplay looks great though.

What has me most excited is that it's by the guys who made Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction -- an awesome, underrated game which set the precedent for Crackdown.

I read the article in Game Informer and it sounds quite interesting, plus I've liked Radical's last two games (Scarface and Incredible Hulk). Do you really need to mention the publisher (especially before the developer)?

I don't but decided to since the word "Prototype" doesn't really pull people into a thread since it could mean a prototype of anything.

Yeah, game looks awesome.

I wonder what will be better, since they both seem similar in gameplay.

This, or Infamous.

God I want this game!
I love the "not yet rated" bit at the end. I know they need to say that, but is there any question what'll be? Gee, I wonder.... Looks good, but I need to see actual game play. I was excited about the game when I first read about it in Game Informer (that magazine is the only reason I'm going to renew my EDGE card). We'll see.

I can't wait for this game even more now. I usually don't buy single player online games expect if they are the best. This looks like a day one buy.

you know i thougth the same thing but i think (and hope) that its just like that because like crackdown you can change your face and look

my interest is piqued especially since im sort of burnt out with shooters. here's hoping this turns out good, although i'm setting my expectations a little low.

Delayed to 2009:
A representative with Sierra Entertainment today confirmed that to be the case with the company's upcoming open-world action game Prototype. Originally set for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC this fall, the game has been bumped to a nonspecific 2009 release date.
"Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions, and in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create," the representative said.

As long as it turns out as good as it looks, I can wait.

there will be plenty of stuff to play until then so i am not to worried about it. It will just make the game better when it is released.

This translates into "Our game is nowhere near as good as GTA 4, so hopefully in a year people will have forgotten about GTA 4 and our game will sell well, faults and all"

I'm real surprised Saints Row 2 is still coming out in August... it's going to get slammed in the reviews because everyone will still be comparing it to GTA 4.

I like when games get pushed back due to polishing reasons. It makes me have trust in the developers that they really want to put out a great game. And it usually shows in the final product. Games aren't movies, don't expect them to take the same amount of time developers! Polish, polish, polish!

They probably decided that they should push it back so that they could put in multiplayer. I'm pretty excited for this game; Hulk: UD was one of the best comic book games of the last generation.

Lets hope they throw back in CO-OP.

Major disappointment that they took it out.

I don't think that this anything to do with GTAIV and how good it is.

They probably delayed it to release a more quality product.

I rather enjoyed playing as Joe Fixit. Plus, the gameplay was very fun.

As for later Prototype release date, there are enough games coming out in 2008 to hold my interest until its release. No worries, Radical.

And another good game developed by Radical? Stuntmaster.

It'd be a shame if they pushed this one back to 09. A shame to us anyway because we'll have to wait longer, but good at the same time because it gives them more time to fix the kinks and really go in dpeth with it and what not. In thoe long run, we might be better off waitin, but I can't wait to get my hands on this one

Yea, thanks for bumping the thread up - I was wondering why I didn't see it in this section on the first few pages.

This, along with Infamous pretty close to each other...gotta say action/open-world fans have got to be pretty pleased.

Hmm, that review kimbaka posted is pretty sparse in the details...didn't really take away much from it. Strange that a site like that would get a review for the game up before somewhere with more cred. Oh well, good to see a high score anyhow.

Yeah, not the greatest site/review. It was just the only thing I found on Google News when searching for 'Prototype Review'. Anyway, I agree, it's a pretty weak review... I'm dying to hear something about how the missions are, and how much gameplay there is. Hopefully it has much more to do than Crackdown did.

There is more than Crackdown. There are 90 events in additional to the missions. Unlike the recent Hulk and Spiderman games the events offer a variety of different tasks. If you've played Hulk or Web of Shadows this is basically the game you wish those were.
Anyone know if GameStop got the pre-order action figures in yet?
They've shipped, so if they aren't there yet they should be there soon. Did you have a question about it?

I called yesterday...they said that they should have it at time of pick up...we all know that's never the case as they are always given out before the game is even released :whistle2:|
