As I only have 2 PS1 games and them being GH versions , I plan to buy more. Should I just go with the rest being all GH? Or should I try to get the orginals? Its Final Fantasy VIII and FF Tactics, I got them for 5.49 at hastings.
 
As far as most collectors are concerned, GH games have a greatly reduced value. I would stay away from them unless an amazing deal comes around.
5.49 for ff8 and tactics is awesome though.
 
How great of a reduced value? And Im kinda leaning twords GH due to a post I read about Chrono Cross having added content in the GH version.
 
Some games have additional content once they "attain" GH status; Chrono Cross, as you mentioned, has an extra audio track, I think. Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition has huge new additions not found in the original game, such as alternate gameplay modes, new character, etc...weigh the pros and cons. If you're collecting games and the GH editions have nothing new, opt for the original release. If you want a good game and the additional greatest hits features interest you, go for GH.
 
Do you care about your label being green? No? Then it doesn't really matter except for the couple few that have changes between the two versions, another example is the GH version of FFVII censoring either hell or damn, I forget, but it only happens a couple times in the game.

PS1 games that had a greatest hits will never really be collectable, there might be a couple games that are slightly more expensive, but it'll never be ridiculously priced compared to the GH. Unless you're talking sealed, thats the only case.
 
If it is a game you think you'll never sell, go for the GH. If you think you may later on it would be wise to get an original release. It doesn't matter to me but a lot of people are fanatical about their games and refuse to buy a GH copy.

Also, if your not some one out to make ridiculous profits on ebay and don't care if the packaging is sligtly less appealing, don't worry about it as the gameplay rarely differs and sometimes is even better in the GH version.
 
Yeah I think Im gonna go with GH for PS1 games as its not much of a hassle and I dont plan to sell them. I plan to hord them all to my self and not let anyont touch. But for current generation its all orginals for me, as its a more of a realistic idea to get them all orginal.
 
I just thought of something, is it possible for me to buy the new GH game, then buy the used orginal version and switch out the manuals and cover? Would anyone know? Or is that cheating someone?
 
If I were you I would stick with the greatest hits series since you've already started with them and prefer to play them than for collector's sake.
I remember reading on these boards that to many collectors seeing greatest hits labels among the regular labels seemed to bother everyone, but not me since I want to play the games and would gladly pay $20 for greatest hits version of Suikoden II or Valkyrie Profile. If I could I would get all the greatest hits versions to have a PSone wall of green labels! :)

There was no new content in the GH version of Chrono Cross.
The only thing Square added to the GH version was the english translation of the ending song "Radical Dreamers" in the manual. 99.9% of the times, the original and GH versions out there are identical except for the label. The only exception I can think of that was Final Fantasy Anthology. For the GH version, they removed the bonus audio cd that came with the original version. So, if the green GH label doesn't bother you, go for the GH version. As for me, I hate GH editions because I like consistency (yea.. I know. I'm weird) and would rather pay a few times as much for an original version.

That doesn't make any sense. If you want the nonGH version, then buy that version. What is the point of buying both versions and swapping the manual/cover? If you buy it from a retail store, the GH and original version cost the same.

The nonGH cds have a prettier label on the cds.

It doesn't really matter. If you are collecting for some weird reason then yeah you might want non-GH. If you are buying games to PLAY them which ya know is kinda the purpose of a game then theres no difference at all. In all likely hood 99% of the games aren't gonna be worth that much in the future anyways. I mean seriously nobody is offering me a couple hundred for my missle command for atari or my smurfs on coleco vision. Chances are if it was made with a greatest hits cover there are gonna be enough in circulation that its value is never gonna be gigantic.
 
Wow NoRain, that kinda decided it for me. "99.9% arent gonna be worth much", is this true? I kinda belive it, the only rare games I know of are valkrie profile and suikdone II.

Also, I think it would look good to have all green labels :)
 
That's mostly true, but some exceptions would be FFVII and Castlevania: SotN. I just bought C:SotN GH off ebay. I already have some and I think it's one of the few that actually is different. I've been told the flaming whip was fixed for GH. The other reason is that sometimes I really am a cheap ass gamer.

I did that w/ Castlevania:SotN a few years back. I had the original, but the disk was pretty scratched up. I picked up the GH version from Sam's for about $10, swapped out the disks & traded in the Non-GH disk w/ the GH packaging for about $10. Yea, the disks look different but I'd rather have the GH disk mint than the original scratched up.

Oh, I also swapped labeling for my GH FF7, because someone abandoned a original copy where I worked a few years back. The disks were scratched up, so I just swapped out the inserts. ;)

QFT. I really don't care if the packaging is GH or not - in the example above I mainly bought the second one to get a better condition disk, and just swapped packaging because I could (plus, it ended up costing me nothing to do it). I try to get games in good condition, but as far as if they're GH or not it's not THAT big of a deal. If I can get the original for the same price & without much hassle, I'll do it.

There are a lot more exceptions. Like FF8.

(Just to set the record straight, I'm not crazy. The only reason why I have both versions is that I'm replacing all the GH games in my collection with the nonGH version. I'll sell the GH version, eventually........)
and SMMM is right. a lot of other games are like this (where the label on the disc for the GH and nonGH are different)

Oddly enough, there are almost always many fewer copies of the Greatest Hits version of a game made than the original version. Yet despite the GH being much rarer, most seem dead set on getting the original (at the GH price point, of course).
 
If you know your gonna like the game get GH, if not get the original so that way when you get an hour into it and you say this blows you can sell it and end up on top or even.
 
But what if I end up liking it and now have a yukky orginal? I guess there will be people gladly happy to trade a GH for my orginal :), my goal is to get all the good PS1 games with all green labels
 
I know there are lots of collectors. But, since he's asking this question, I question whether he's really collecting for value (if you were, you'd just default to the original).

So, what I'm going to say is, all being the same (no new content, both are the same price, same condition, both at the same place), go with the original. But, otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. Personally, I'd rather have extra content than the "original"

Then, to be fair, I don't sell games. I am more of a game horder. Then again, most games I really want to replay. Now, this won't get the internet people salivating very much if you post your collection (they usually like either tons of really old complete games or very small collections of "excellent" games in their mind. But, if you want an ego boost, just invite an 8 year old gamer over, and watch their mouth drop open when they see your games.
 
At this point in the systems life, does it matter? I sold my GH FF7 for $40 and it was opened. I bought it for $8, and the price I set it at was $15. So I say just get whichever one you can.
Is Gamecrazy the only national chain that still really sells PS1 games still? As in active sale and trade?
 
there's 3 versions of FFVIII

original FF8 with white disc and the face on it(I have this version)

GH FF8 silver disc with faces on it

GH version with white top and FF8 logo on it, and the disc says Square Enix instead of Squaresoft(I have this version too)


not sure about FF7, 9, or other squaresoft games that have the name changed to square enix

But PE1 is GH....and it is wayyy better then PE2 IMO. =)
 
It comes down to this:

If you are planning on PLAYING the game, get the GH version.

If you are buying is simply for COLLECTING, get the non-GH version.
 
I have FF8 with just a white disc and it says Square Enix. Yes I understand I'm buying these to play, but when I found out PE 2 wasnt GH, it kinda made me wonder wether I should even get the PE series, as I want them all to match.

Kind of contradictory statement, Don't mean to tell you how to do things but, down the road your not gonna give a flying F what the colors are and if they all match unless your just insane, I've resorted to buying disc only games as much as i can for the price and the ease of storage.

And for the record PE2 Blows compared to the first one but its still kinda fun
 
...I hate my life, while people out there are deciding on life changing descisons, Im getting anxiety from wether I should choose GH or Non-GH. Yes its true I take medication for anxiety.

All of those are pretty good. I have almost all of those and the only two I've completed are Xenogears and FFVII. I would recommend xenogears. As far as GH vs. non-GH, I'm not to particular. Most of my ps1 games are GH. I got them as GH because the were cheap. Unless you are a collector, get the gh version.
