PS1 Y-Seal? Also question about Disc Shields

Hey everyone,

This seemed like the best place to ask these questions since this is where most of all the big collectors seem to be.

Anyways, over the last year or so I've acquired some sealed ps1 games here and there and some have the Y-fold and some don't. Looking online I can't seem to get a straight answer about the Y-seal and such versus other wrapping.

A few sealed games have the usual white UPC label on top of the case but then have a seamed shrink wrap. Other forums online seem to discuss it but there never seems to be a clear conclusion about if it is an actual true factory seal or not. Some have "proof" that games like MGS had both seamed and y-folds while others say they are fake.

Also one other question is I have a few other greatest hits versions of games that have what looks like a factory Y-Fold but no white upc label on top? They are all greatest hits games that are for the most part still around - like FF8. They look legit - brand new, y-fold looks completely in tact with no iffy areas, etc.

It's been so long since I've seen PS1 games in stores that I can't remember but I'm sure I did see some seamed seal games at some point.

I was just looking for some input from you guys.

Thanks.

Edit:

I didn't want to make another post and clutter up the board so I thought I'd ask my other question. What is the best way you guys have used to remove those disc shields that places like Blockbuster use to put on discs? I've read online about people using goo-gone to remove them but when I attempted it with a cheap disc the game almost felt brittle to me afterward. The way that I did it was I let it soak in good gone over night and then I was able to peel it off. The disc worked when I tested it briefly but it just didn't feel right afterward and I was afraid it would crack from spinning or maybe mess up the motor.

pictures on the ps1 games would help, but youd have to ask some other members about the goo-gone stuff.

I think they were actually talking about what youre looking for in one of the threads a while back

Don't know about the y-fold vs heat shrink wrap thing. I've never seen a PS1 game with a seam in the wrap before, but I don't know much about them.

But your GH games are legit. Not every game came with the top sticker, and a y-fold is very difficult to produce yourself. Basically, y-fold is shorthand for a legitimate seal.

The disc shields...I dunno. I wouldn't recommend soaking a disc in anything besides warm soapy water, though.

Games now day's are impossible to tell if it's been a reshrinked or not. Only 360 games have the official sticker seal.

I made a return recently to Target they actually opened it up to make sure it was the right disc inside.

It is screwy. There are more than one type of shrink wrapping and many games don't have the sealing sticker for some odd reason. I would be weary of the seam though. I have never seen even one game come that way.

After a while Sony stopped requiring the UPC sticker with the game name on the top of cases. Many later games in the PS1 gen came out without them.

As for Y-fold versus heat sealed(seam), again some games were sealed with Y-fold consistently while others had batches of Y-fold and/or seam sealed.

As for removing those security stickers on the top of games I would suggest either a blow dryer on low setting while slowly peeling it off or just trying to slowly peel it off with no heat whatsoever.

Any leftover glue residue can be removed simply by using a piece of packing tape and sticking it and peeling it off of the disc. I only use chemicals as a last resort when removing stickers.

Although most do, not all PS1 games have Y fold seals. I don't know for sure if Metal Gear Solid was one of them though.

The PS1 was dead by the time they stopped using those stickers. As far as I know, every original printing of every US released PS1 game has one of those stickers. I believe the only PS1 games that don't have the sticker are the ones that had a printing in or after 2005 (maybe 2004). Persona 2 and Rhapsody immediately come to mind. I'm pretty sure there are several Square-Enix games without them too. It's likely FF8 is one of them.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I don't think the white label Collectors' Edition games have the stickers either. They were only included in multipacks.

A lot of PS1 games came in both y-folded and heat-wrapped variations, FF7 is a good example. Also the newest pressings of FF8, Chrono Cross, etc. all are heat-wrapped with no security strip whereas the last pressing (from 2007/2008) had Y-Fold with no security strip.

You've likely got a bunch of legit sealed games, games that were out of print before 2003 should all have the security strip, though as I believe Sony stopped requiring that sometime between 2003-2004.

MGS 1 GH never came in seam sealed/heat shrink sealed.

this is a photo of the newer GH final fantasy that are coming out, all have seam sealed. they also have an overlap seam in the back.
