I'm guessing the former can get me a better deal tho :)

Just wishing to fart around with images in Little Big Planet and looks like one of these is the only way - I don't get the impression the PS3 supports any other USB cameras? I tried throwing one I had in there - nope.

Even better if it's new yet dirt cheap, which again I'd have to imagine would have to be the now (rather) old PS2 camera.

You can get eyetoys for $5 or $10 on ebay if all you want it for is to mess around in LBP. I got one last year pretty much for the purpose of platinuming Burnout Paradise
 
They may be hard to find now since it's been a little while, but Sears, K-Mart, and Toys R Us have all clearanced the Eye of Judgement bundle with the PS3 Eye in recent months, generally in the $15-20 range. YMMV, of course, especially at this point, but possibly worth looking for if you can make it to any of those stores.
 
The PS2 Eyetoy can be had used for $5 from Gamestop. I have one that I was using as a webcam on my computer for a while, but I haven't used it in a while.
