That looks pretty terrible. I'll be keeping my PS2 around.

FFXII on PS2:

FFXII on PS3 (using the same cables/same tv):

I've noticed it with some games, but not all look bad. I was playing Radiata Stories the other day and it looked the same to me. Some games do look worse though. Hopefully it will be fixed with firmware updates.
Yes. That is why I am posting this now.
Get with it man!
Hey, did you know the PS3 has an upscaling problem?

Anyway, this should be fixed with firmware updates. The PS3 is just doing a really, really, poor job with with de-interlacing and pixels are being flipped.

On some games, like those that use progressive scan, it's not a problem, games like God of War look just as good as PS2.
Other games don't have a difference either.

There's countless theads on this, but the most known is the official thread here:

Countless threads on different websites... right, thanks.

Damage Control Statement.

Just thought I'd add one too..

Sony fans must be experts at backpedaling and patching leaks. At least the 360 gets visual upgrades for Backwards Compatible Titles.

Yeh, Psychonauts looks really amazing on the X-Box 2! \\:D/

Better to play the games where some are slightly hurt visually then to not be able to play them at all.

Wow, this is the first I've heard of this and that looks terrible. Just awful. Looks like Sony really rushed out with the PS3 now. It almost takes the PS2 games back to PS1 era jagged edges.

Better to be able to stand and look at games than to need to strain your vision on a feature that was so gloriously hailed from the get-go

I do not strain my vision when I am playing a PS2 game on my PS3. It's not anything worth bitching about. Everything I have is playable, I can read the menus in the game just fine. With the huge amount of games backwards compatible I have nothing to complain about since anything I have or want to buy works on the PS3 just fine.

This is not a big deal. Just play the damn game on PS2 if its so horrible for you. Honestly why the hell buy a new system and then bitch when you can't play a game that came out 5 years ago?(just saying, ff12 can't be the only game that looks like "shit".)

Because you just payed $599 US dollars for that new system, that touts all of these features, honestly that is really disappointing in my eyes and I can't see much use in defending it.
Are you being sarcastic?
I said Okami looks fine. Not once did I say when I was playing it, "OMG I CANT SEE! THE JAGGIES... THEY...THEY ARE EVERYWHERE! ARGHHH!!!"

So, there in fact it is "fine".
No bitch im not.

I agree. I wasn't "bitching" I was just trying to inform my fellow CAGs about this "shitty" feature. I don't buy systems to play last-gen games on them.

And you're correct. FF12 is not the only game that looks like "poop". It's all 480i only games.

That does look pretty bad, but I would guess that Sony will get around to updating the PS3 firmware so that it applies full anti-aliasing, along with up conversion at some point. I doubt it's a huge priority right now.

I hope they do provide upconversion at some point. It's silly they chose not to provide this from the get-go.

You mean both backwards compatible X-Box games? Please, the PS3 and 360 aren't even in the same league.

I just had a PS3 home tonight, and can say it up sampled games to 480p and made them look a bit sharper. Basically the same overall, but it was kind of weird being able to see MPEG artifacting clearly if you stood next to the screen. My impression was the graphics were better, not worse.

The PS3 actually has PS2 hardware inside and they still screwed this up. Amazing...I guess they tried to get too fancy with some upscaling shit and messed it all up.

I finally got around to putting in FF12 in my ps3 today.
I was expecting an unplayable pile of poop per this post.

However the game is fine and very playable.

Yes its not as great as ps2.
But its no where near "poop" levels either.

I Would expect a firmware update later on.

NO WAI! DIS ISN'T TEH RAEL! It's M$ propoganda! Masters of Sony wouldn't do this to us!

:) Hee hee, looks like both sides have problems. Sucks though.

I played 75 hours of FFXII on my PS3 and finished it last night. I really only noticed the video issues a handful of times - it could be improved, but it's not as bas as its made out to be.

I agree with the theory on the US PS boards about pixel-flipping, b/c Sega Genesis Collection looks great with Progressive Scan turned on.
Meh. No real difference.

Okami looks fine.
Try Sly 3 or Metal Gear Solid :bomb:

At least the few 200+ xbox games look the same or better running on the 360. Black and Halo 2 look way better on my 360. I rather have the "Few" games looking better than being able to play all the games with "faults" running on the ps3. At least Microsoft was honest from the very early admitting that not all games were going to work on the 360, now Sony on the other hand...

Sony never said all games would work, and they did a hell of a lot better with backwards compatibility than MS did. I'd rather be able over 1000 games on my PS3 with a few having some problems then have the pathetic 360 backwards compatibility. You honestly can't even compare the two and make the 360 look better.

I'll trade less than perfect graphics (right now) for the ability to actually play almost every game I own/buy (right now) with the possibility of upgraded graphics (in the future).

This is vs the 360's nice graphics (right now) with the ability to play a select number of games (right now) with the possibility of maybe being able to play the more popular titles (in the future). I've looked at a ton of clearance Xbox games I want to buy, but I don't know if they'll ever make the BC list, so I can't. I can pick up PS2 games without these same worries.

I guarantee Psychonauts would not have been on the BC list if it hadn't have been for a bunch of angry fanboys posting on the internet. I don't feel like rallying gamerblogs to get games I like added to the BC list...

I've never really understood the obsession over backwards compatibilty. If you want to play a PS2 game, just play it in your PS2. Why waste wear and tear on your PS3? I would much prefer a cheaper console without backwards compatibility or the effort being put into making a more reliable console.

Switching from playing a game on the PS2 and loading it on the PS3 (FFXII for example), the game looks a lot worse. Details are lost because of the "pixel flipping" issue.

They didn't advertise compatability with the exception of the graphics looking worse.

I don't want to settle for worse looking games, and we shouldn't have to.

Because without backwards compatibility, there's no reason to own games at all. Hardware wont' last forever, and it's wonderful to know you can still run games on the new system. It's hard to take games seriously as an art form if you get cut off from old games every 5 years. So far Sony's taken backwards compatibility very seriously, which is a wonderful thing.

It also means developers can continue budgeting for PS2 titles (as they did for the PS1), and it means I'm more likely to buy a game on PS3 than 360, as they're a better chance I'll still be able to play it 10 years from now.

That is the smartest thing I've read all day today. :applause:

Huh?

This thread is completely false. I've been testing my BC on PS3, with PS2 games, like FFXII, and they have no issues at all. Actually, FFXII looks better on PS3, with much cleaner looking menus and sharper image.

Also, PS1 games run really good on PS3 also.

Some of us don't like having 19 consoles hooked up to the television... it looks tacky.

I'd rather have a handful of systems but those systems can run a shitload of games past and present.
What does the pixel flipping thing mean?
Someone posted a link to a Playstation board thread on the PS2's graphical woes in the PS3. The first post explains it all in much better detail than I ever could (and has pictures). Nevertheless, "pixel flipping" is only a theory for the graphical issues at the moment.

Tales of the Abyss is plain ugly on the ps3. You can even look at the boot up screen for that game and see the flipped pixels and such.

Games do look nasty sometimes. DMC3 is ok, but even the cutscenes in Onimusha3 look awful and blocky. But yeah, my PS1 games look nice. SFA3 and Puzzle Fighter are vivid.

I was wondering what PS1 games looked like. I'm gonna fire up Medal of Honor and Chrono Cross in a little bit to see how they look.
Did the last update fix the FFXII problem? I'm playing it now and not noticing it looking ugly like it used to.
You can notice it heavily in the movies. More of a digitzed look to it and there are sometimes a wave of vertical "lines"...for lack of a better term what to call it.

You're blind, really go get your eyes checked if you can't see the huge difference with an hdtv. It is just less noticeable when playing it on sdtv(480i) but it is still there. The last update didn't fix this issue yet.

I tested Okami with my GF.

I didnt let her know what console was playing what and showed both. And PS2 Okami looked alot better.

Okami is pretty bad because it has alot of fine lines and outlining. PS3 was uber-jaggy.

Now im kind of pissed. Cause I want to play FFXII (just got it) but I dont know if I should start it on my friends PS2 (he let me borrow) or my PS3.

You think they'll fix this?

Okay, thanks for the links. If that's for real, I wonder why it's happening? I wonder if there's something the PS3's doing that was just literally done in hardware backwards, or something with anti-aliasing or something.

I mean it could be a hardware bug, or just something in software.
