PS2 games to get

I'm entirely new to the playstation family. I've got a couple of questions:

1) How can I know whether my PS3 has the Emotion Engine installed? And does that matter? What PS2 games can I play?
2) What PS2 games should I get?

I'm interested in games that are out of the ordinary. Not shooters or sports. The games I've played the most are Elite Beat Agents, some of the Zelda games and Guild Wars type games. I don't have a "type" of game I like best, but I got the PS3 because the 360 library was seriously lacking in "interesting" games. I figured that the PS3, with its huge back catalog of games, could give me interesting.

Any ideas?

The Katamari games and Indigo Prophecy are all that come to mind right now, aside from the main PS2 staples that everyone loves.

"Interesting", eh? Just so happens that's my specialty. :)

Katamari was already mentioned, but deserves mentioning again. Add to that the following:

Rez - trippy shooter with rhythm elements
Culdcept - very addictive game - hard to describe, but the accepted short description is "Monopoly meets Magic: The Gathering"
Okami - I'm sure you've heard of this one, but believe the hype - it's one of the most unique gaming experiences to come along in a while
Steambot Chronicles - A very interesting mix of sandbox, RPG & music elements - a game that has a little bit of everything
Samurai Champloo - a very unique beat-em-up by Grasshopper, the guys who brought you Killer 7
Trapt - set & spring traps for people invading your castle.

That's just a few off the top of my head - the PS2 is home to some very original games, that's for sure.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Any particular place you guys like to shop for your used games?

I posted it here because of compatibility concerns with the PS3. If it's still more suited to that forum, that's fine too. I'm not picky. :)

They did an update a couple months back that fixed any ps2 compatibility issues on the ps3. I've played several ps2 games on mine and have had no problems at all. As far as used games I buy mine on ebay; just be sure to use a seller that's set up with paypal buyer protection so you can get your money back if they flake.

Any of the NIS games, especially Disgaea 1 and 2
Dynasty Warriors 3 or 5
Champions of Norrath (the first one)
Bombastic

Given that I have no interest in any PS3 games at the moment, I too decided to go back and pick up those PS2 titles that eluded this former Nintendo fanboy. Given your apparent interest in Nintendo, I have to say that you will love Okami. I am 13 hours in with no end in sight. The game seems huge with so much to do and has more style crammed into it than any "next-gen" experience I have had thus far. You also can't miss with God of War I/II. After that, I am in the same boat as you. Figured I would try out SoC, and some of the SONY IPs.

I picked up God of War I from EB. New but cheap because it was a greatest hits. I bought God of War II from someone here and it should be here shortly. I've been thinking about Okami (the premise seems like it would have been perfect for the Wii); just waiting to find it used. I saw Shadow of the Colossus at Target for $15 but I didn't pick it up. I should.

This'll keep me busy for a while. :) Thanks.

I dunno about anybody else, but I thought Zone of the Enders was a pretty and pretty good time waster. Especially ZoE2 I had fun with that one.

The Metal Gear Solid series is pretty solid too. Incidentally these two series were also created by the same guy at Konami.

I want to get Okami, but I'm waiting for the price to drop... but I'm worried I might not be able to find the game again. I"m thinking that its going to become rare like Rez... should I buy now... or wait for a price drop.

I'd really enjoyed ZOE 2... Thats a game that sony should try to make exclusive.

Marvel vs Capcom 2
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Tekken 5
GTA series
True Crime: New York City (might be better on Xbox)
Hot Shots Golf Fore!
Klonoa 2
Kingdom Hearts
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution (make sure it's Evolution)
