So I'm excited when I get home with my ffxi and hdd, I go ahead and follow the installation procedure, then insert the playonline disc, and it reads "HDD not found". This doesn't appear to be a complicated process and while I'm no computer expert, I'm positive I did this thing right.

So I call SCE customer support, follow there routines which included physically removing and reinstalling the HDD, runnning the playonline disc again, no HDD found again, then inserting the utility disc which tells me to please wait a moment then freezes, they end up telling me to send in the system, hdd, and network adaptor.

Now, when I insert my madden 2004, which I was playing fine on friday BTW, it freezes in the very beginning at the picture of vick when it says loading. My symphony of the night ps1 disc works fine, so does the blue backed playonline disc, which is included with ffxi. So now I'm not reading dvds'.

I just cannot believe that their hardware is such garbage, it's a 30001 and I've never played any dvd movies on the thing, but should I move the system a little bit, it decides to crap in my coffee.

So now I gotta take $12 at least of my hard earned cash and mail the thing to sony (with insurance) and my $100 game gets to collect dust for the 1st few weeks I own it, I had the pass code to get on my friend's server and everything, what a waste of gil for him.

I'm not refering to games here, it just makes me sick that a company thinks that cuz they own the market they can make a junk product and know people will buy it.

I always like to divide to the number of PS2's Sony says they sold by 3 or 4 and that's probably closer to the number of people that own a properly operating PS2.

This also has me worried. When I picked up my FFXI w/t HDD last Tuesday, the guy told me about the ten dollar for one year warranty. I at first thought that it was obviously always good to insure stuff. But then he reminded me about the first PS2's and actually a lot of the new ones (how terrible their durability is) . To make it worse I had turned in my old broken PS2 for credit toward XI and the HDD, so I fully understood what he was talking about. Sadly, he didn't tell me this the day before when I actually payed for XI, and I was just picking it up, so I didn't have any money on me. This is making me scared 8-[ .

they always say that stuff to people buying new systems, they just want you the pay the extra 10 bucks no matter what system you buy.

I wil say that on several occasions while cranking up the HDD for the first time today I thought it was possibly busted. I install my new HDD in my first gen PS2, started up and it saw the HDD, my ethernet was connected and the FF and POL icons were there in the browser and seemed like it was all ready for me to start up and go.

...but as it turned out it kept going from the browser....back to the browser! I had to reinstall the POL software before I could get online and register before I could get on FF11.

In the end though the solution was simple I just didnt want to open my nice sealed FF11! :p
that is why i have no problem with buying a new ps2, swapping the serial numbers, and returning the old one
Yes, we get it...you love "teh fr4ud!" You've got 11 posts and nearly all of them condone scamming or this "serial number" swap. Learn a new trick.

yea well lucky me...after one day of playing ff11...my ps2 fell and now does not detect the network adapter at all so tahtn means no ff11...i even went out an bought another adapter but still nothing....i need a damn new ps2 now....i hope it drops in price
^^ ....actually you HAD to open FFXI. It was mandatory to install the PO disc once.
Yeah I get that now I just figured seeing the POL browser in the HDD meant I could access it, go online and THEN register. Frankly I would have thought anything that wouldve kept me away from having to do that 2 hour install of FF. (the Beta test and the PC version made me mad gun-shy!)

But, luckily it was running in 45 minutes

Can any of you who have the HDD working now confirm whether you can move saves from your memory cards to the HDD?

Thanks much

I'm not some dumbass, little newb. I know when someone is trying to take advantage of me and when they're not. I'm worried because Sony is really bad at making 1st model hardware, or at least that's what happened with the PS2.

Clearly, the early model PS2s have some problems, which is why Sony fixes them for free.

My 30001 got all crazy, so I just bought a new one immediately, sent the old one to Sony for repairs, and then sold it on eBay when I got it back.

The nice thing with this method is that you can get more for it on eBay than usual becuase:
-It comes with a warranty (I forget how long) after it comes back from Sony.
-You can include the box and manual (even the new controller, if you wish) from your new PS2.

Yea, I am usually wearing of 1st model problems, since the Original Playstation release, that was a nightmare, and the ps2's are not much different. I had one of those new 50001 models that I got on christmas, and it messed up in January and had to be sent back. A few people have made the comment, Sony sells more playstations 2 systems, because they are always breaking. I actually find some truth to this :p

i had a problem wit my ps2..whnever i put in a blue disc..the system starts to vibrate more thn the controller  and its really really annoying whn u wanna play a game QUITLY. and sometimes it doesnt even play disc..i ever sent it to sony..got it baq..did all that mail crap. and it still messes up..it was ok for the 1st month.. my gamecube or xbox dun even give me n e trouble. plus one of my contollers dun work rite either. and for FF11, for all the money u gonna spend jus buy a 20 dollar controller for ur pc n play it on that...

Assuming your PC can handle the specs, not every machine has the juice unless you;re a hardcore PC gamer in which case you would have bought in 3 months ago. But still I've gone through 2 different dual anolog PC controllers and they both start to suck after a couple of months of use, the Dual shock it by far the better controller to use for FF11.

I'm still happy that I didn see a problem with my 1st gen PS2 for 3 years after I bought it, my original first gen PS(one) went 4 years before I have to turn it upside down to releve the skipping issues(I never bothered to get the laser replaced because after 4 years the laser replacement in china town cost more than buying a new PSone, RIDICULOUS)

I've had my ps2 for 3-4 years and have never had a problem with it. Bought the HDD and FFXI, everything worked and installed fine on the first try. I've actually had more problems with the Xbox skipping and DREs, my PS2 never skips or has DREs.

LOL, nice avatar mrtoki. I remember the first time I set eyes on Naruto manga and laughed my ass off when he doppledang'd into that hot chick.

I bought a used launch model PS2 on ebay.
No box, manual, etc, just a NA (with disc) and 2 cntrollers.

It was shipped wrapped in newspapers, no foam or peanuts, and in a box that was a little too big.

It works fine, I play blue discs and DVDs all the time. I even dropped it from 4 feet once and it still works.

Funny, isn't it?

I still have my 2 original PS2s and am amazed they are still actually working. The only problem I've really encountered is the SOCOM 2 Mystery problem where it freezes after completion of the drug lab level, and this is with multiple SOCOM 2 Discs and on different PS2s.

buying a used Ps2 w/o any warranty is a bad idea, and deffinitely dont buy one from a rental place like Blockbuster. I worked there and by the time we stopped renting them, we had 2 that worked. I bought it for $120 brought it home, used it for 1 day after which it broke. but hey i found 13 cents in change inside the system when i tried to get my disk out.
buying a used Ps2 w/o any warranty and deffinitely dont buy one from a rental plac like Blockbuster, cause even if it works and it was a good deal theres a good chance itll brak and youll get screwed over. The Original ps2 just dont have any lasting quality
