Well my friend just called me from Gamestop saying that he just got Kingdom hearts 2. While this is all good and nice, while there he saw a sign in the window saying the PS2 has a price drop. It didnt say how much and he asked the guy at the counter and he said it wasnt supposed to be up yet. I know this is more of a rumor but i am pretty sure he isnt lying... anyone who works at gamestop care to confirm this?

UPDATE: This has been confirmed by a few CAGers and has been reported by many media outlets such as gamespot and joystiq. The price is believed to be $129.99 and should occur near the end of april.

Weird:

I had a dream last night that it went down to $70.

Personally I didn't buy my PSone until it went to $50 and my cube until they were $100. The most expensive system I've ever bought was a $179 XBOX
the price drop date (end of April) is only a rumor, not an official confirmation. There will be a price drop eventually, the only question is WHEN?
These so called analysts predicted a price drop during the 2005 holiday for the PS2. It never happened. So I'm not sure what kind of sources these guys are getting their info from but I won't rely on them.
It's also showing up at many different business/tech sites this morning:

Sony PlayStation 2 price cut seen soon / $129.99

Its good to see the prices dropping. The biggest drop from memory was for the Dreamcast. I was pissed when Sega dropped the ball and decided to getting out of the console making biz. It went from like $200 to $50 like what seemed to be overnight. This happened a few months after I purchased mine too :bomb:.... The most I have dropped for a system but I have to say, at the time.. It was all worth it. I wished I had waitied a month or so.

$20 is kind of a bullshit price drop IMO (I was really counting on it going to $99) but I guess it's better than nothing.

-$20 is still great.

Thought the price drop wasn't going to happen after reading some article where Sony said the PS2 was staying put at $149.99. That made me lose hope and patience as the epitome of a CAG (I had been waiting all these years because I didn't want to spend the $$$ thinking the PS3 would be out by now).

Should have known better. Finally decided to buy the system in March and to think I could've put that savings towards another game.

-$20 is pretty sad. I bought one in January for $149.99 with Xmen Legends 2 from Target.

I figured that was the best deal that I would see in the next 6 months. So far It's been 4 months without a price drop.

I'm really glad I bought my Xbox as soon as they dropped it to $179.99. I've had 3 years of play out of it and the price hasn't really dropped in the last 3 years.
Are you sure it was new ones? Gamestop.com shows refurbished units for $119.99.
I'm pretty sure, but I could have heard wrong when I asked....
I'll double check tonight.

i dont think i would buy an XBOX even if they fell to 99..... now if they fell to 49 i would buy one

Lack of space keeps me from buying at 99

Yeah, these drops are weird. The "good" one was $299 to $199. (I was at Best Buy at opening to finally get a PS2 that day.. ;) ). Then $179 (which I thought was a bad joke when I first saw EBGames hyping a whole $20 drop!!), then $149... they really shoulda dropped it to $149 2 years ago and $99 this year.

The $20 is so small it's almost pointless.... $50 on a console feels like a good drop to generate excitement/hype. I know the bottom line counts, but if Sony's hurting for mindspace, locking people into a PS2 now at $99 might help counter the Xbox 360 and clear space nicely to differentiate the PS3.

(unless there's the rumoured drop to $99 at PS3 launch)

I think some of you are confusing rumors (speculations, etc. whatever you want to call it) with facts. This so called analyst,Colin Sebastian, is predicting that there is a price drop this month, "But even if a PS2 price cut doesn't happen this month, Sebastian is convinced one will come eventually" Doh! Of course there will be a price drop eventually. Do we really need someone to state the obvious? Let me make a bold prediction then. There will be a price drop for the XBOX 360 (eventually). Sony never stated that the ps2 would drop exactly $20 to $129.99 this month. It could more. It could come a little later. etc..

I will believe it when I see it (price drop). I guess this issue doesn't really concern me since I already have a ps2 (my second ps2 since my original ps2 died), not sure why I'm so worked up over this issue. Maybe I'm hoping that Microsoft will replicate Sony's pricing strategy with the XBox.

seems to get their info from the same source, Colin Sebastian.

Gamestop is giving $50 for the fatty version. If I knew it would be $99 I'd trade mine in today wait a while and pick up the slim for $50.

I would be upset at the price drop too if my PS2 didn't breakdown on me a few months ago. I mean, i'm still pretty upset at the fact it broke down and i have to go buy another one, but this is somewhat good news for me.

Eh...$20 is still a Greatest Hits title, more if you're fine with shopping used and pick up things like GTA3 or Jak and Daxter.

Thing is, this is going to make the eventual drop to $99 seem like nothing. After all, we're all going to be saying that it's only $30, right? ;)

Some of you are just so damn whiney. If Sony decides to drop to $139 its STILL a $10 difference. Who cares? Let them do what they want. If they think it will generate more sales, then good for them.

A 20 dollar price drop is complete bullshit unless they pack it wish a game or something. I've had a really bad history with buying a "refurbished " console from gamespot and i really don't wanna have to do it again.

I saw a PS2 with 2 ccontrolers and all of the cords at a pwan shop for 110...you think i should try to get it? It was a bunch of them and they were in plastic ..like they could have gottena shipment from somewher. The controllers weren't all black. just odd observations.

True, it's a small price drop. However, look at it this way, it's $20 less than you would be paying before and in my eyes, any price drop is better than none at all.

Seriously. Companies don't drop prices as a favor to consumers. They do it when they see a drop in demand at the current price point. Apparently their market data show that a $20 price drop will show an optimal increase in revenue. If they're right, why drop it any lower? If they're wrong, the market will let them know, and they'll drop it again.
