PS2 Serial Numbers?

Just got a new slim PS2 as a birthday gift from a relative of mine, but the problem is that the disc (be it game or DVD) will not be read by the console itself. I've tried placing it horizontally or vertically but neither do not work, the spindle rotates for about 3-5 seconds then sort of "gives up."

So I go to Circuit City (thank goodness for receipts), tell them my problems with the console and ask them if I can exchange it for a new console or in-store credit if it's not possible for a flat out exchange. During the checkout process, the cashier had scanned the bar codes at the top of the box and the side of the box. He then opened up the box to verify that everything was there and then got to the console unit itself. He looks at the top of the box and then the console bottom and then says I can't return it because the serial number (or some type of number, it starts with SCPH) because the unit inside was 7000 and the one on the box was 7500.

As confused as I was, I didn't want to start anything (being the pansy that I am) so I talked to the cashier a bit if it was at least possible for in-store credit and stated that that was how I received the console, but was denied.

Is there a huge difference when comparing different SCPH numbers? Also, what is the purpose for scanning the actual bar code/serial number on the unit itself? I've had it done to my DS but didn't see the actual number on my receipt.

So now I'm currently out of luck with an unusable PS2, but I'm going to go back to Circuit City tomorrow for another shot.

SCPH is the first line of code in identying the model of your ps2. It sounds like to me that the console was placed in a box that didn't match with the console you received. Did the box look like it was opened when you received it.

Sometimes (not accusing you) people well try to return products that they didn't purchase from a certain store for cash credit. However in a lot of cases this sort of crap happens from within the store itself. I work in retail and this kind of thing happens all the time.

AFAIK, this is the bar code that stores scan in order to sell the system. I don't have any of my receipts out to check, but I'm pretty sure the serial of the system you buy is linked to the receipt and hence you can only return the unit that you buy...

EDIT: Just found my PStwo receipt and the serial/UPC that is scanned is the one that is on the system. This was at EBGames, but I can't imagine the process is different at CC...

I bought a DS from CC and the serial number is on the receipt, so I would imagine your PS2 serial number would be on the receipt.

It sorta sounds like what happened is someone switched their broken PS2 with a new one and returned it and you happened to be the unlucky person who bought it.

I'm looking at the receipt right now and I ONLY see the SCPH line that is placed on the actual receipt itself. Looking at the console, there is a string of numbers which starts with PK and that is NOT on the receipt.

The box appeared to be brand new, the little "playstation" label thing was perfectly in tact and each accessory had it's own little bag (except for one of the power supply cords, the one that plugs into the wall).

From the unit itself, it was wrapped in this half plastic half soft piece of "foam," with the clear part over the PK number so that it could be read through the box. The console itself seemed brand new to me, it even had that protective plastic over the little strip near the middle top of the console. I checked it out again and found no fingerprints or no tampering either.

fuck, I guess I am totally out of luck.

I have it in my room right now and continuing to try to boot up a DVD or GT3 in it. I've tried giving a little jiggle to it but nothing is working right now, I don't even get any output to the TV, the screen just remains black and no sound comes out of it (I'm expecting some sort of PS2/Sony jingle as with the PS1).

Now I'm not sure what the hell to do with the thing. I already purchased a memory card, GT3 and SOCOM 3 and have nothing to play them on. I could resell the games and give away the memory card, but that's already $70+ worth of accessories/games that I've already bought.

Any ideas on what I can do? Is the slim PStwo troublesome in some areas that I'm not aware of?

I agree it sounds like someone returned a broken PS2 and you bought it. I would go back to CC and tell them you bought this PS2 and it was broken. They should be able to look in their records to see that someone else returned it before.

I will try that tomorrow morning once the store opens.

If all else fails, would Wal-Mart be able to do an exchange for me?

I just checked my Target receipt and my DS serial number does indeed show up.

But with the CC receipt, I only see the number that is on a barcode near the top of the box, there is nowhere I can find that unique "PK" number found on the console on the receipt.

Today was a great day for me regarding my PS2 situation.

Went back to CC at around 1pm to find an employee that was familiar with my chronic price-matching and coupon using. I told her what happened earlier and how I just wanted a straight exchange without any trouble. I showed her the receipt without the console serial number and showed her my Target receipt of my DS and told her that this consoles' SN was not scanned.

She said I didn't need to bring up all this talk and such so she quickly went to the back and grabbed a fresh PS2 out for me. She apologized for the trouble and mentioned to me about the free Sony DVD remote that was in the circular and threw that in for me too.

So now I have a brand new PS2 and I'm currently playing the hell out of GT3, feels very nostalgic but I love it.
