Could someone tell me the difference between those two models? From what I can tell both are progressive scan capable, assuming I ever use that feature. All the searches I've run on google I end up on some emulator hack site so I've given up there. The reason I ask is I ran across what I assume is the last PS2 Online pack at CostCo yesterday and I bought it on an impulse since I'm worried about my current PS2 cashing out on me. My question is should I keep this system or go for the new PStwo? Also is this model really an 'upgrade' compared to the model I currently have? ( 30001 vs 50001 )

Thanks for you time =)

In comparison to the older 30001, the 50001 has...

-Infrared port built in, for Sony's new remote control generation which now supports opening and closing the tray, as well as turning the system on and off, through the remote control.
-Reduced fan noise by 75%, improved control of air flow
-Plays DVD-R, DVD-RW, R+, and RW+ on their systems for the very first time.

So, it looks like most of the differences are for movie playback. Hope that helps.

The I-link was removed but I wasn't entirely sure if it was removed prior to the 50001. The 50001 certainly does not have it.

Are there any sites that talk about the differences between all the models? I've been checking out PS2 lots on eBay, and their model #'s range all across the board.
Don't forget hard drive incompatibility, and your old multi tap won't work with the pstwo due to size differences.
You are thinking of the 70001. The 30001, 39001, and 50001 are all hard drive and multi-tap capable.

From Sony regarding the original models 3000 series variations( not including the 50k & 70k series):

There are four different model numbers for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system. The
model numbers are SCPH-30001, SCPH-35001, SCPH-30001 R and SCPH-39001.

There are no differences in the functionality between the SCPH-30001 and SCPH-35001 PlayStation 2
consoles. The SCPH-35001 was a bundle package (with Gran Turismo(TM)3: A-Spec) which Sony Computer
Entertainment America (SCEA) introduced for a limited time, back in July of 2001. These units are
no longer being produced.

In terms of functionality, the only difference between the SCPH-30001 R/SCPH 39001 and the other two
models are within the driver settings. The SCPH-30001 R/SCPH-39001 includes the most recent DVD
Player which will allow you to use the DVD Remote Control (for PlayStation(R)2) (SCPH-10150) and IR
Receiver Unit (for PlayStation(R)2) (SCPH-10160) without a Memory Card (8MB) (for PlayStation(R)2).

One small clarification for you on this. Both are progressive scan capable for the games that support that feature, but only the 50001 can do progressive scan DVD movie playback.

Hit the nail on the head, also the drivers for PS1 playback were updated along with Browser/CD-Player/DVD-Player.
I have a first gen PS2 that plays DVD-R's just fine.
Yeah, but Sony said, "Plays DVD-R, DVD-RW, R+, and RW+ on their systems for the very first time." I assume they meant first time for +R or RW. I was only writing what Sony said.
I have a 50001 and I never noticed the built in infrared port. Is it noticable?
Not really. It is a small box (about 1mm x 1mm) above the eject button.

Ah I see it..Now my life is fulfilled...

Wow, just found this post again, thanks for the info guys =)

I heard or read somewhere that the graphics processor was better in the later models. Any truth to that?

So which is a better system to have?

If you want the latest hardware and firmware, don't intend to use the HDD, and don't mind the top-loading method then the 7000x is a good choice. Otherwise, the 5000x series are the ones to get.

Does the 70001 have an infared port built in?

Yes.

No. Although Sony has mentioned that they intend for future revisions of the 7000x series to combine the two main CPUs into a single chip solution (with no added features).

Future version? Hell no! The current 7000x series model has the EE and GS on one piece of silicon! Immense cost savings to Sony, but no performance difference between the original launch units and this latest revision.
So the PSTwo supports DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-R and progressive scan playback?
As did the 5000x series. Like I stated earlier, every single model of the PS2 made to date can do progressive scan output for the games that have that feature, but only the 5000x model and the 7000x (aka PStwo) models can do progressive scan DVD movie playback. But seriously, if you want a good progressive scan DVD player, get a stand alone model and don't use your PS2/PStwo.

I am going to buy PS2 Model Number 77008 can anyone please tell me are there any draw back for lower specification. can anyone tell me where i can find different model specification details... Please hurry Thanx

So it looks like every PS2 from SCPH-50000 onwards is made in China instead of Japan then .Also the SCPH-75001 and 75002 have compatability problems with some PS2 and Playstation games because it has a Different lens .I know a number of people who have disk read errors and overheating problems with the slim PS2.I'm still on my SCPH-35001 no problems yet apart from it does not like playing dual layer DVD's too much.
