PS3 40gb or 80gb

40GB is cheaper, quieter--my mom's is DEAD SILENT, even when folding 24/7--and cooler. But it only has 2 USB ports, no card readers and can't play PS2 games.
80GB can play most PS2 games, has 4 USB ports and all the card readers.
60GB can play more or less all PS2 games, has 4 USB ports and the card readers. Mine's a little noisy when working hard (folding, upscaling games, playing blu-rays), and puts out a TON of heat. I can clearly hear it from across the room during quiet parts of a movie or TV show. But make no mistake, even the "loud" PS3 doesn't hold a candle to a 360. If I stand 2 feet from my PS3 while it's folding and my 360 is turned on two rooms away, the sound level is about equal.
Unless the 360's DVD drive is spinning, in which case there's no contest.

Were there any problems with the 60GB PS3? I haven't been following PS3's but I thought I heard they had some minor problems with them breaking. Would the 80GB be more reliable? Sorry for sounding like a newbie

Nope. PS3's are extremely reliable and in fact have a less than 1% failure rate.
And the 40gb's use the new 65nm chips they are going to be quiter as the fan does not need to work as hard to keep it cool.

I have a 60 GB and it's not noticeably loud. I don't have experience with the 40 or 80 GB models so I can't compare, however.
I would say it's worth going for the 80 Gb over the 40; personally I never had a PS2, and it's been really nice to be able to play them on the PS3.
The card reader is also a useful thing to have just for future ease of data transfer. Nonetheless, there are USB ports so you could always just use a USB card reader with the 40gb version.

Depends on what you feel like doing with the console. If you are just looking to play PS3 titles, download some demos then the 40 GB model will suit you fine.
Now, if you feel like you will use the USB Ports...and the Card Readers frequently (which you can do on YOUR COMPUTER) then the 80 GB model.
I would suggest getting a 60 GB model somewhere if you feel like going for all the extras the 80 GB model has.

Check Costco and Sam's Club. Both Costcos and all three Sam's Clubs near me have their own 60GB bundles with Motorstorm (no that's not a typo, they're 60GB not 80s), which they've recently reduced from $549 to $499 in the past few weeks.
There's even a sign up that says "We currently only stock the 60GB PS3".

I work at Sam's Club and We still currently have 14 of the 60GB Motorstorm Bundles at 549.99. I guess i'll wait it out and hopefully I can pick one of thos eup for 499.99 Thanks for the info.
