PS3 500 GB internal HD $65

The one OP posted about is indeed 5400 RPM, which is optimal.

Many 500 GB HDD are cheaper on NewEgg, but be careful, most of them are 7200 RPM, those run hot in a PS3.

But I agree Squarehard, should be relatively easy to find a 5400 RPM 500 GB HDD for $50 or so.

IDK, I paid $100 for mine (500gb, 5400rpm, Seagate) from BB, but I wasn't hunting for a deal, just became obsessed with having to do it. After stripping 3 screws (make sure you lossen them with needle nose pliers before ever putting a screwdriver in there) and finally getting it all back together, it was the best thing I had ever done in my life. 465gb free after partition, still rocking with like 300gb free.

Last month Newegg had the WD Scorpio Blue 500gb 5400rpm for $40 after coupon code. Unless you need a ps3 drive urgently it is worth it to wait for another sale from Newegg.

I want to eventually get a bigger HD for my PS3. So, consensus is that a good deal for a 500GB, 5400 RPM HDD is $50 and under?

Can't get enough storage for my japanesr porno. This would make a perfect solution.

It's annoying to put in disc. But this way, it would be instantly available for 3 mins drop and play
What do you people need all of that storage for?
uhhhh GAMEZ!!!!

seriously, I got down to like 100mb on my 60gb launch. I'm downloading PSN titles almost every week, average about 200mb I'd say. With more sales on PS1 classics (can range from 75mb-250mb) I've been getting a lot of those. New Move supported games and patches may come out (not to mention some patches are freaking huge) PS Home can cache up to 8gb of storage space if you want it too..I'm pretty sure within 2 years I will have trimmed down my 300gb free to maybe less than 100gb..

Also, the point being would be 'do it right the first time' Why put in a measely 320gb hard drive when the 500gb is the biggest you can get..edit: @62t, I thought the 750gb were a 'double stack' and wouldn't fit or something like that..?

Sounds like you download everything put on PSN. Why do you play all of those games and finish none of them? Also, looking at what you've played there's no way you could have filled up your HDD already.
Sounds like you download everything put on PSN. I guess when you have no life it's easy to fill up a HDD.
QFT douche..like I said, I get them when there are deals. And yeah, I guess it's easy to fill up an HDD with that stuff when you've got money to actually spend on video games..

I wouldn't say that a 5400 is optimal. I ran a 7200 in my launch 60GB for 3 years and it wasn't any worse for the wear. Sony always included 5400 rpm drives, but they don't advise against 7200s anywhere, and I've never noticed much worse heat output as a result of the faster drive.

Since I moved to a Slim with a 5400 I've noticed the write speed being considerably slower, and it really made me regret not waiting for a reasonably priced 7200 rpm 750GB. Though it could just be the Slim's writing function being slower...

I'm on 3.41 firmware and don't plan on updating any time soon. I'd like to replace the stock hdd in my slim but I think I remember reading that you have to be using the current fw if you want to replace it. Is that true or can I still replace my hdd with 3.41?

I have a 7200 in my PS3. I've noticed better performance. I went from a scorpio blue to a scorpio black, though. WD's scorpio blue made anything run from the HDD stutter.

You can put a 1TB in there, its just only going to read it as 750gb. So yeah, it would be rather pointless to spend extra money for space you can't even use.

Right now there is no 7200 rpm 750GB that will fit in the PS3. But do keep in mind that a 5400 rpm 750GB will run faster than smaller HDD at 7200 rpm due to density

I had every single psn game + every single ps1 game, all updated to newest versions + 20 or so optional/mandatory game installs on hdd from retail discs + music on there, and it was only 183 gig. So, take that into account. That said, i still use a 320 gig.

it was pain in ass to shove my 1 tb into my new ps3 because it is a bit thick.

Sorry to go off topic from the deal here, but for those looking into a 500 GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue HD:

I got a WD 500 GB Scorpio Blue in July for my Phat PS3 and all was well and good until about three weeks ago. I was playing a game and all of a sudden the audio and video started stuttering, and then froze.

After turning the PS3 off, then back on it gave me an error message saying "Can not start. Hard Disk Not Found". None of the tips anywhere on how to fix it by getting into the system menu helped. I ended up returning it to Western Digital for a new one and all of my save game data was lost.

With that said, here's tip for those getting a 500 GB Scorpio Blue...when you install it for the first time, put a jumper on the right two prongs on the back of the hard drive (my local computer repair shop gave me one for free). As per the WD manual, this will kick the data transfer speed in half, allowing the PS3 to read the hard drive without any problems.

While some folks haven't needed to do this, I would suggest giving it a try because it could save you a big headache down the line.

For the guys who upgraded, did you say bye to your protected save files (the case for a number of games). From what I've heard, a system back up to an external drive won't save those files.

From what I understand a backup does copy the protected saves if it is being restored to the SAME system.

When I was doing research be before I upgraded it was found that the additional heat created by a 7200rpm drive was negligible, but the improvement in actual performance was also minimal. I decided it wasn't worth the difference in price.

That does make sense if the platters are placed more closely, but I still can't figure out why the Slim is so much slower installing than the old model was. I mean, my old system probably installed 2-3x as fast.

I've also noticed that the Blu-Ray drives on the new Slims are terribly loud with their mechanical noises compared to the old ones (but then again I might not have heard the old BD drives over the old "jet engine" fan).

Which slim do you have? I have the 160GB and it's actually completely silent compared to a 120GB that I tried out from GS before I got the 160GB from warehousedeals.

A system backup (using the backup utility already on the PS3) WILL backup copy protected saves which will be fully restored once you run the restore utility on the new hard drive. I speak from experience.

Not true, as others have mentioned a 7200 RPM doesn't run substantially hotter than a 5400 RPM one in a ps3. There are a lot of sites out there that have done tests. Anyway, I was using a 320 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi travelstar for a couple of years and just replaced it with a 500 GB 7200 drive last weekend. Never had any issues..... Oh except for the fact that it took freaking 14 hours to restore all my data to my new HDD!

Good info!

Will now look into 7200 RPM HDD as well, since I still have about 60 GB left on my slim, was holding out for something in the $40 range...

14 hours? Better buy a few books on my Kindle before the restoration.

From my experience there is variance in noise in all PS3's. My 120gb slim has a noisy fan where as my friend's 120gb slim is completely silent. My old 80gb phat was completely silent where as the 80gb phat I bought for my girlfriend can be a little noisy.

I just upgraded recently, and was delighted to find my protected files DID transfer over just fine. You need to do a FULL backup, and I would suspect it needs to be to the same PS3.

I got FLOW from that one day free promotion and Sony removed it from everyone's download list so one has to pay to re-download it. If I upgrade my HDD using the backup/restore utility on the PS3, will my copy of FLOW be transferred as well?

Reading from there, it seems like Scorpio Blue gets a lot of thumbs up. Is it the best model to pick in terms of reliability and cost?

The backup and restore does exactly what it says. It backs up every and restores everything (as long as it's to the same PS3). My advice to make things go faster. Delete game installs/videos/music to reduce space.
