My ps3 has started freezing after a half hr or so of playing. Several games, several movies, no specific spots, it just hits at random generally half hr to an hr into playing or watching.

I keep it dust free as possible, sits in an open area so theres good air flow.

If I try to take it to BB to get it delt with or fixed under the 2yr ext warranty, my question is what can I do about all my saved info etc etc on the HD in it? Is there a way to save it to an extneral HD and swap it over if I get a replacement Ps3?

you can transfer your save files to an external hard drive, also remember to deactive your system when returning it to the store. This can be found in account management. Also some saves are locked

As CaoPi said, some game saves are locked, but before taking the system into the store to use the warranty I would suggest trying to do a file system restore.

If you do a lot of adding/deleting stuff to your system it may get slower and freeze, similar to fragmentation of files on a PC.

You need to go into the PS3's 'safe mode' menu, which involves holding down the reset/power button on the front of the system.

Steps to do to get to Safe Mode:

1. Backup any saves/files you may not want to lose as the File Restore may delete them if they're corrupted.
2. Turn on the PS3 using the reset/power button. Hold the button, it should shut off the system the first time.
3. Do so again, you should hear three beeps(one immediately on startup, followed by two quick ones). Let the reset/power button go after the two quick beeps.
4. Follow on-screen prompts, you want I believe it's option 3(Restore File System).

When you do a file restore you have to reset any custom backgrounds/icons you have, but any files such as photos should be ok. But it never hurts to make a quick backup before going through with this process.

I had freezing issues on some games after as little as 30 minutes of playing for a while and after doing the file restore it negated those freezing issues.

Here's an article that explains the Safe Mode in a bit more detail: http://playstationlifestyle.net/2009/10/14/keep-your-ps3-safe-with-this-guide/

When I had to exchange my PS3 at Best Buy, I was able to buy the new one, take it home to use the PS3 file transfer (which transfers the locked saves too) and then return the old one with warranty and just the new receipt to get all my money back. Then they had me repurchase the new one using the serial on the new receipt with the gift card that had my old PS3 total on it. I would ask your local Best Buy if they will allow you to do that as the File Transfer took a few hours and so it is not something you want to attempt in the store.

I still had the random freezing issue but the past 2 weeks, twice, it would freeze then automatically turn itself off.....

I dug out my BB stuff and take it in for the warrant refurb replacement etc...After calling the BB it was purchased from, they said it sounds like it needed to be sent in etc etc. Its about an hr away from where I live but they said I could take it to any BB.

The one I took it to said they played a couple diff games and a blu ray on it for roughly half an hr to 45 mins max. It didnt do anything to them so they said there was nothing they could do and I wanted it sent off to get fully checked etc. They told me that if they sent it off and the repair center found nothing wrong, they would charge me 35.00 for shipping to get it back....

So...fuck BB....fuck geek squad...they can all eat a dick.

why would they give you a refurb, you bought it used? They have always swapped out for a new model for me

Damn. That sucks. But now I know for certain not to bother with their new warranties. They used to have replacement warranties about 4-5 years ago that allowed you to just go into the store, say 'my shit's broke' and they would essentially either swap out for a new one on the spot or give you a gift card with the purchase price on it.

What was especially cool was if the price had dropped since you bought it you STILL got back the old MSRP for it.;)

Unfortunately, like I said above they switched from Product Replacement Plans to Product Service Plans now, where they attempt THREE repairs(or are supposed to anyway) and then and only then do they even consider giving you a refurb or a new system and I do believe it's at their discretion whether or not you get a refurb or a new one too.

that blows, try a different bestbuy I remember when I returned my 40G for the 120G it was a simple swap out for a new one

or don't get their warranty next time go with square trade

I wasn't saying that I had one of their current warranties, just that I remember when I did on my one PS2 and my original Xbox. The Xbox was already dead as a system once MS released the 360, so when the warranty was just about up on my Xbox I used it, even though the system was still going strong.

I was given back $150 in credit, which I used on a PStwo slim, which I then sold off to someone else for $100 or so($50 off MSRP at the time). In that way I got my cash back somewhat, I used the warranty I had paid for AND I got about 2 years of use out of the XBox.

But I guess that's why they stopped offering the replacement plans, since many people used them as a 'trade up' plan, where they could use (insert item name here) for two years and at the end of the warranty claim that the item was bad and get a newer model in the same price range for only the cost of the warranty. Rinse and repeat every so many years.

I was hoping for a refurb and nothing more like many in the past have taken advantage of etc etc. I just hooked it back up and now I cant get any audio or video. I swapped out and tried the component cables and nothing shows up. Thought it was my tv and my gamecube worked just fine.

Guess Ill have to make the trip to the BB it was originally purchased from.

My gf took it back to the original BB she bought it from. She didnt get any specifics but they said it needed to be sent back so apparently something went on that they felt it was due a refurb.

Got my refurb back today.

For some reason the guy that delt with it when my gf took it in kept the HD.

When we picked it up, they took the one out of the Ps3 and put my old one back in.

Got it home and apparently they shouldnt have done that because the refurb doesnt recognize the old HD and they think by downloading the newest system update should fix it.

A system update will NOT fix the current PS3 not recognizing your old system's HDD. Unfortunately you can't just swap HDD's like that and your old HDD from the other system will be wiped of any data(game saves, photos, etc) via a full formatting when you go to use it in the current PS3.

Although I do believe you can get an external enclosure for the old HDD and try to transfer files to your PC that way to try and save anything you might not want to lose. However, some game saves are locked to the HDD and cannot be copied or transferred and as such will be lost when the formatting is done.

What the BB guy told me was going on wasnt going on.

I got everything squared away and all is well for now.

Last question, all the stuff I downloaded from PSN, I wont have to pay again to get it all back will I?

All of the stuff you downloaded from PSN should be able to be re-downloaded with no issues and without having to pay again. As long as it's in your download purchase list it should be no problem to download the stuff again.
