PS3 Buying Advice

First time venturing into this neck of the forums, hopefully I'm not missing a thread I didn't see asking the same thing. Anyway, caved on the great price on Injustice this week but bought it for PS3 without having a PS3. I just didn't want to buy it for a system I haven't even turned on in two years and have no interest in any exclusives anymore (the 360) and then have to buy a Live sub that may or may not get any actual use if I want to play some multi. So earlier tonight I took my two 360s (one working, one dead) to Gamestop since I got $100 extra trade and that got me about $200 so I was happy. Then I got stuck on which system to pick up.

Hemmed and hawed for a bit but they were working on closing so I made a spur decision and went with a used 160GB slim model. I never buy things like this used but at the time it sounded like a good idea; the price was right and even if I got a PS+ sub was still going to be cheaper and it was a model that I heard good things about. While the system's working fine I overlooked one important factor: the controller. Thing is a worn out, broken piece of junk; multiple buttons don't even work at all. Now I'm having second thoughts that I should have just gone with one of the new models. I don't want to get stuck in this exchange loop hoping everything works right until they just say that's enough. I also know that I'll likely never be fully satisfied with anything other than a new controller, the feel is night and day and even one broken in by someone else's hands just feels wrong to me and buying a new controller cancels out the price advantage.

At the time I remembered hearing that the latest iteration of the PS3 is not nearly to the same standard as the slim was. Plus I really couldn't decide if the red or white system was the better value. I like the look of the red and God of War would probably be alright (never played one before but like similar games) but do I really want six of them? On the other hand, the white system itself doesn't do a whole lot for me but the one year PS+ sub seems like it could be worthwhile... I think. Honestly, other than that you get some free games while you're subscribed I can't really figure out what I'm actually getting or if that changes at all over the life of the sub. It sounds like the variety from that might be more appealing than six samey games but I'd definitely like the input of someone who's more familiar. I'm not super concerned about losing those games because in a years time I won't be touching God of War either and it will likely have about the same value.

Assuming, based on their return policy, I shouldn't have any problem exchaning this for a different system so what's probably my best value? Red, White, another used 160GB slim or something else I've overlooked? Thanks everyone.

i would advise you to not gamble by buying used game system. It is just not worth it. If you want to buy a new ps3 console, and you have patience. you should wait a bit, because there is a good chance of a price drop on the god of war bundle consoles.

Yeah, it literally just froze mid cinematic a moment ago. Definitely going back, just need to figure out which system to replace it with. The supposed massive price drop was supposed to have happened any number of times in the last two and a half months so I'm really not sure I want to sit and wait for who knows how much longer when I want to play Injustice and MLB 13 now. The PS2 didn't get that huge 50% drop until after the PS3 launch after all and I would think that Sony is going to want to squeeze every last dollar out of the system in the lead up to what's supposed to be it's best year before slashing it in the fall.

If you can wait, the PS3 will likely get slashed by E3 to 199. I got a 160 gb ps3 with mortal Kombat at GameStop last summer for 199 after my original phat ps3 died.

Does it have to be from Gamestop? Just go to Amazon Warehouse and buy this one, or wait for another you want to pop up.

Anyway, whatever you do I'd get PS+ if I were you. It's a pretty damn good value. Right now you get Infamous 2 and Little Big Planet 2 with a sub along with Vanquish, Demon's Souls and some other games. I think Demon's Souls is going to be gone soon though and the rumor is it could be replaced with Sleeping Dogs next month.

Regardless you end up with a good amount of decent games for the price.

i would also advise against getting from amazon warehouse, their quality has gone way down. Several cag posters reported recently, they received "used" ps3 console being in poor/ damaged conditions. In some cases, it is returns some1 else had switched out. I think the new god of war console is probably the best deal out right now, if you must have it.

i second his statement, E3 is not that far away. atleast, give it some consideration, even a $30-50 could be a possiblity from the new super slim bundle like god of war ascension. That $30-50 can go a long way for getting you a new game or two.

I would get the white system with the PS+ subscription, the older slims are getting hard to find and the largest HD is 320gb I think. I know its $100 more OOP than what you got for the trade in but you are pretty much set for a while with the extra games from the plus subscription and the 500gb HD. Unless you want to wait for E3 but I wouldnt bank on a price drop, it seems Sony likes to add "value" these days.

My advice:

  1. Get a new system. Less headache.
  2. Get the package with a PS+ year subscription if that's an option. It's a $50 value and it is an AWESOME deal. All the games it has could keep you busy for the entire year depending on the type of gamer you are. And sounds like you didn't play a crazy amount to begin with. I can't keep up with my PS+ collection and the games I buy. God of War is an excellent series but you can always buy that for cheap in the future. Definitely, a must play series.
  3. I recommend a 320gb HDD especially if you get the PS+. BUT, you can always replace the HDD and those things are getting cheaper and cheaper. Expect to spend $50 or less so factor that into whatever package you get. But don't buy the HDD upgrade immediately. Wait until black Friday because I doubt you'll use all the space by then and you might find 1 TB HDDs selling for $60ish.
  4. Don't know about the E3 price slash on the console. Its all speculation and with the last "value add" move on the super slim, I'm not confident on a price slash. It would make sense with the PS4 coming out but I think it's anyone's guess what they do. My advice, find a deal on a model that is being closed out. If you find one, that is usually the price you would see next black Friday or price cut.
Good luck!

My BC phat PS3 just died. Thanks for the advice.

I was wondering what to do about buying a new one or waiting for the PS4, but Sony has not been forth coming with backwards compatibility in the PS4. Since Son'y's presentation is less than 5 weeks away, I think I can wait that long. I was wondering which PS3 bundle to get. I hope there is a new PS3 bundle with PS+ in the works for E3.

All signs point to no BC

I think it's pretty well established that the PS4 will not have BC. I believe that applies only to phyiscal games and that you will be able to play digital versions of games. So, if you had games linked to your PSN ID then you can play them on the new console. Only problem I can see is if they don't try to play those games via some virtual console/emulator on there. Then they have to recode the game for the PS4 architecture and that's not gonna happen. Anyway, I digressed there.

Also, my phat PS3 died from YLOD last summer and was able to bring it to life for a bit and was able to transfer data to a new ps3 slim I got. I did a lot of research into buying a new one so that's why I know all this sheeeeeeeiiiiiiiit! Glad I could help. I'd recommend to just wait until E3 to see announcements on the PS3 (and PS4) if you can wait. Really wish they had software emulation BC on there. Hell, I don't see a good reason they don't have a PS2 emulator for PS3. They sell us PS2 digital games already... probably because they want us to buy the game digitally from them. There I go off again...

EDIT:
Just saw this in my email. You get a year of PS+ with the 500GB white console. The way I calculate the price is $300-$50(PS+)-$50 (hard drive upgrade cost when comparing to a 250 0r 160GB model)=$200. Not a bad price if you look at it like that. Of course I'm a greedy fuck so I waited until black Friday to "pay" $150. But that plan was thwarted when a friend gave me his PS3 for a blu-ray player. He turned his on 5 times in 2 years so pretty much new. I still had this strange empty feeling that I was passing up on a great deal on BF. I call is O-CAG-D, obsessive CAGilulous disorder. Finally, here's the link:
http://us.playstation.com/psn/playstation-plus/ Take a look at the top graphic of the games you get with PS+. 12 PS3 games and 6 PS VITA (you can add these to your download list and have a shitton of games if you ever buy a Vita). That alone would keep most gamers buys the entire year. So, thats 6 full retail PS3 games and almost all are AAA titles. The rest are PSN games and some are really good. And basically you keep adding new games. I think Sleeping Dogs is being added on Tuesday. As you can tell, I've been very impressed with PS+. I don't usually rave about membership based services but here, how can I not.

I dont think current PSN games will be playable on the PS4, I am pretty sure I read this somewhere after the show they did last month. This is my one deciding factor between the PS4 and new xbox, if neither offer it then I am just trading in my 360 and one of my extra PS3's for a PS4.

At this point I would always go with NEW. Especially with all the bundles that are available. You have at the moment a 500gb GOW bundle $350 comes with all 6 GOW games or the 500gb white PS+ plus bundle, includes a 1 year sub to playstation + for $299.

I know the super slims are hit and miss but you'd be covered by the warranty.
