I haven't seen too many deals posted about upgrading the hard drive in the Playstation 3, so I figured I would post this. This is the cheapest I've seen a retail store offer a 160GB Sata Notebook Drive:

Keep in mind that the PS3 will only take 2.5 inch SATA notebook drives, so that limits which ones you can use. Also, before you install your new drive, you'll want to backup the data on your existing drive to an external hard drive, memory stick, or USB flash drive.

The instructions included with the PS3 tell you exactly how to replace the existing drive so you won't void your warranty...a very good thing! Beyond that, GameSpot has written up a very useful guide on installation.

And here is a great video to help you install the drive:
If you add a filler couldn't you use the 15 off 100 coupon to drop the price down to 85?
You're so right! Thanks for catching that. Add a cheap item for filler, and you can use the $15 off $100 coupon, effectively making this an $85 upgrade.

might need a bigger harddrive next year, but for now i just save games and some psn games, and stream everything else from my pc

This sounds like a great deal... if I needed more space. I have a 20GB PS3 and I almost always have at least 12GB unused. Maybe if Sony would release some more PS1 games or maybe even the rumored Saturn games...
That'd be cool.... if we weren't boycotting Circuit City.
WE aren't, so speak for yourself.

Thanks for posting this. I'm on the fence over whether I will jump on this deal, but it is a nice one.
To do the transfer how big of a USB drive is needed?
Whatever the size of all the data you want to transfer is.
Another better deal:

I usually buy from zipzoomfly because they're kinder on shipping to Hawaii than newegg, but if I were in the mainland, I'd probably be shopping more there.

To be fair, here's another one from mwave, also not a bad place to buy parts online or in CA:

Thanks for the mwave link. I forgot about checking them out. They're only a couple of miles away so, I might pick one up later in the week.

whoa, where did you read rumors about Saturn games?
whoa, where did you read rumors about Saturn games?
Actually, I noticed it after I read the Wikipedia article on PS3 (the section on the Playstation Network). It does not mention the Saturn specifically but it does mention Sega. Granted, I was making a lot of assumptions but I did say I thought it was a rumor. IMO, it would make sense because Dreamcast games may be too large for download and Sony would be foolish to go after Genesis games; they're already available on the VC. They could of course be talking about the Sega CD and 32X but I doubt it. That only leaves the Saturn. Anyway, the original article where the Wikipedia poster got his information is about a year old and in a different language and the article and the poster admit that Sega denies that anything is official, yet. But I still have my fingers crossed that one day Sony's PSN will be as good as the VC (with loads of PS1 and Saturn games).

Here's the Wikipedia article:

Arent the majority of HDD compatable with PS3? Why is this a deal? Seems like a good advertisement thread to me

I'm running low on space... thanks for the heads up though. The only complaint is the pain transfering the files... Hmmm, maybe the PS3 101 thread covers this.

Once you got mts files, your PS3 is an AVCHD player, very nice for HD Camcorders...

Stick with newegg as they are also running the Save $20 off $100 when paying with paypal using PAYPAL20 as the code.

And im holding out for a 250 to drop. As im no where even to th epoint of needing a bigger drive yet anyways.
The PayPal code was dead... unless it's active again? no way... if it is, i'll bite for sure.
It might be i havent used it i just saw it in my email today.
