PS3 FAQ's: PSN, Gaming, Hardware, Accessories, Gen. Discussions...etc.

I didn't want to create a new thread for this, so maybe someone can help.

I just bought Crash1 and Wild Arms last night from the store. Both games are displayed with the smoothing option on, regardless if I turn it off or on. My physical PS1 games are not like this at all. If I turn smoothing off they are super blocky.

Am I doing something wrong? I can't stand filters on older games (hurts my eyes because I feel like my vision is blurry).
As far as being inferior cause of the limit - I was led to believe that a big push of larger games - this one and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD mainly, caused Microsoft to lift the limit on these two/raise the overall cap. So game vs game, I'm thinking they're the exact same. But as far as exclusive content goes - I was told that the PSN version only got a few bonus Challenge levels, whereas the 360 version got the unlockable skin for the original character for the next gen version. Is that off? Do both get to unlock the skin? I also, after you posted that, tried to look it up to confirm it but could only find info on PS3 exclusive content. Also - saw that one article said you'd be able to play the PSN version on the PSP as well? If that's the case - hell, that alone might make me wanna pick it up on PSN instead.
PS3 version of BCR unlocks the new costume for the 3D version as well.
I originally thought this was just a problem with SC4, but now I'm noticing it happen in Bionic Commando Rearmed and CoD4. I can look at the global leaderboards fine, but when I try to change the filter to friends only, I either get an error message or the leaderboard just never loads. Anyone else experiencing this, or maybe this happened to you in the past and you did something to fix it?

It's been affecting me since at least the end of July. Strangely, my friends leaderboard for PixelJunk Monsters still works.
Man, this happened to me a while back. Probably two or three months ago. Then it all of a sudden started working again like a month later.

There are also some good video tutorials on youtube and similiar sites. I used a video one for mine since I found it a lot easier to get through it by watching someone else do it instead of reading a How To on it.

On a semi-related note, there is a demo for the new Vampire Rain game on the Japanese PS3 shop. It plays entirely in english. It also plays entirely in budget title flavor.

And for your own reference just go to the shop section that has PV in its name, that is where the demos are easily located.

I have one of the new 32 inch Vizio plasmas and the general consensus seems to be Plasmas are a lot better then they were years ago for gaming but not 100% safe.

I played Persona 3:FES for over 12 hours and no permanent burn in. Just temporary that would last for 2 minutes then go away. Also new Plasmas have a "white wash" to get rid of burn in that you should probably run for ten minutes if you played a game for over 6 hours straight imho.

I know Plasmas don't last as long as LCDs, but for the picture quality a plasma is more worth it imho. Faster response time and better contrast ratio. I never tried a PS3/360 over HDMI on a LCD, but with component there was still a lot of ghosting. Plasma is the way to go. Lastly, I don't plan on keeping the Plasma TV for more then six years... something better will be out by then, so if it dies in six years thats fine with me (low standards, I know.). Lastly I don't know why I read on so many places that Plasmas can only go to 720p, because mine goes to 1080i. Not sure about 1080p on plasmas but mine does 1080i.

Im getting that same exact vizio next week, I am very eager :) to play my PS3/Xbox 360 over HDMI w/720p
Hi!,

I'm new in these forums and would like to greet everyone! Anyway, I just purchased a Panasonic 42PV8 Plasma and would like to know if plasma's are already safe for gaming! (Ps3,Ps2). I've done a number of researches on the web but they don't seem to be conclusive.

Thanks for your inputs!

Regards,

Here is a link to provide you with the specs of the T.V

http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/home_av/tvs/0,39037586,43414299p,00.htm
I really want that tv,but can't afford it. I saw one very similar at sears. I swear it had the best picture out of all the tv's they had on display.

I got the 720P version of the OP. No problems so far and looks great. Have a similarly sized LCD and prefer the plama, but not by much. Anyways, it's great for HD gaming.

Plamas work great for games. Like Monsta Mack, I get some image retention if I leave a static image on the screen for a while but it washes away in a minute or two or normal TV viewing. No permanent burn in and I've been gaming on mine over a year. The only quibble I have is phosphor lag which I barely notice. Otherwise, I love mine. Olympics in HD looks splendid!...and yes, there are Plasmas out there that will do 1080P (like mine, Panasonic THPZ500u)

I don't think so. I got my Panasonic plasma last year (THPU42 or soemthing like that) and it has looked great since the start. The only thing I'd change about it is the number of inputs. It only has 2 component inputs, 2 HDMI inputs, 1 S-Video and (I think) 2 composite inputs. Between an old 360, a Wii, a Japanese PS2 and the video input from my PSP, I could use more component inputs. Also it does run in 1080p via HDMI.
Is it necessary to do a "break-in" since this is a new generation plasma?

Thanks again!
IMO, breaking in is a waste. You shave time off the TV's life by using a "break-in" disc, as it basically burns up some of the stuff (phosphorus, perhaps) to get the colors looking better. While many argue that it's worth it, I'd rather break it in with normal use, as the picture should still look good when it leaves the box.

Is there a list anywhere of games that support custom soundtracks? Google doesn't know.

Also, can the custom soundtrack music be streamed if you use something like TVersity? Like, if I can stream music when not playing a game, can I then stream music on games that support custom soundtracks?

Noticed last night playing R & C that the vertical motion control of my DS3 was not working. Had to switch to my original SIXAXIS. Anyone else have this problem?

I'll have to try another game tonight, as it could be other weirdness; R & C locked up on me twice, and the second time it corrupted my save game... my only one. I was on the 15th area (of 18)!!! Copied my sons save game, and I'll give that a try.

It's definitely a lot less sensitive. My friend and I have confirmed this in multiple games.

Yeah, just confirmed. The vertical aspect of the motion controls definitely don't work on my DS3, at least for R&C. I'll re download the rub-a-dub demo again, to test that.

But even worse, I still can't back out of certain menus in R &C without the game freezing. This time I was using a different save game, and I deleted the install, and let it reinstall. I'll try the insomniac forums, to see if anyone else had that issue maybe.

A lot of the games you listed aren't 1080p. Here's a list of a number of PS3 games and their resolutions:

Just a thought, if you're having six axis issues make sure the controller is assigned to slot 1.
I've had a few times where my controller was assigned slot 2 or 3 due to the wireless guitars
being in 1/2 and the six axis mode wouldn't work until I reassigned it to 1. Rub A Dub was
one of these games. It allows the analog sticks to override the motion sensor if assigned
higher up.

Well, I found a new 60 GB PS3 yesterday and bought it. Now, can I use my PS2 Codebreaker on the PS3? I'd assume that you can't, but no harm in asking, right?

Wow and I thought the the US PSN store was short on demos. The JPN store only had 16 demos that showed up for PS3 under the section with PV, and all of them games that are already out in the US as well. Am I missing something or are there more to find ?

From what I've seen the US gets more demos then any other region. And as for the Japanese store, they sometimes get ones before we do, if they are playable or not without knowing any Japanese is a entirely different story.

There is more in the japanese store, but it requires exploring and trial and error. I've downloaded some odd things on it, sometimes a simple expansion for some game I don't own and sometimes a weird application or two.

I think the real advantage to making a japanese user account is to take advanatge of theirrgames that are for sale in the store. They get a lot more then we do. And before you ask, it wont accept a credit card that is not from japan but if you really want something you can find japanese playstation cards to use on it from various importers.

Most the animated stuff looks really good. I personally found Surfs Up to have a lot of grain, but that may be just my opinion.

Chicken Little looks really good, as well as a lot of other animated movies.

300, Batman Begins, Casino Royale, and Cloverfield are my personal recommendations. 300 is on the grainy side but the director purposely added the grain effect, film still looks and sounds spectacular, oh yeah and it's a good flick, lol.

It's designed to look like a documentary; I think the grain is intentional.

There aren't many full 1080p games on Blu-ray (though there are many on PSN that are) because many developers simply haven't grasped how to develop properly for the Cell processor. For example, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is in 1080p but has a horrible framerate.

Hey thanks for all the suggestions guys! Anyone want to suggest a good HDMI cable at Monoprice? Also for those that have 1080P, what game do you think looks the best? I can't wait to get this set delivered....gonna be a big upgrade from the SDTV I have my PS3 hooked up to now!

I fucking love my PS3, just thought everyone should know.

Every time I get home I just turn on my PS3 and have it on at all times. I have a 250gb HDD with 60gb of it filled and have everything organized in different folders and have around 25 games and demo's and 30 videos ect. It's so friggen nice never worrying about filling up the HDD and just DLing whatever the heck I want.

And I love how fast and fluid the whole layout is. I got my PS3 at launch and I grow more in love with it every day. It also dl's things for me lightning fast. Took me around 1-2 hours to DL force unleashed on my 360 and around 25mins on my PS3.

And now that it supports Hulu (via that computer program) it is my favorite console ever. I'm so happy I can watch the entire Arrested Development series on my big screen free of charge!

Oh and Pixel Junk games are a friggen blast. Monsters is one of my favorite games of all time.
/end PS3 love fest

Hi, my ps3 just stopped working. The playstation 3 turns on and off but nothing but a black screen comes on the TV. the wires and everything are in there and haven't been unplugged for months. It just stopped working. The power works though, and the PS3 has a green light.

try toggling your hdmi cables a bit. My hdmi cable is some what falsely loose so, whenever It's not plug in securely I get that problem you're having.

Well we have the opposite experience in that regard. I dl stuff lightning fast with my 360. It never takes me more than 5 minutes to dl a demo. With my PS3 however, I'm lucky if I get it in 10 minutes and then there's the horrible, horrible install times. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes just for the friggin thing to install. And sometimes after that, a stupid license agreement. The act of me dling and installing should be my fucking consent! :bomb:

BTW, if you're not exaggerating about the 360 demo dl times, that's a clear sign of a connection problem with your router. When you go to test settings in the 360s system settings, what NAT type does it say you have? Strict, moderate, or open? I'm guessing strict.

Wait, what?

Edit: Is this what you're referring to? Sucks that it's only free for 60 days, but the sign-up seems simple enough that you'd just use fake names and alternate emails to get around it.

Ladies and Gentlemen.....

My PS3 just died.... again. I have the 60 gig PS3 and this is my second one that had the system that turned on and than in about 10 min or so it shuts off with a blinking red light. Now when I turn it on it just never shows a picture and just blinks red lights.

I'm assuming this means its shot?
