PS3 FAQ's: PSN, Gaming, Hardware, Accessories, Gen. Discussions...etc.

This may sound like a dumb question to me, but its one I feel is worth asking.

I bought a PS3 last december and I'm wondering now whether its healthier for the machine to be powered on, but not on (aka red light on in the front) or have the power switched off completely via the back switch once the PS3 is turnned off via the XMB.

The ps2 had this "design choice" as well (switch in the back, reset and disc open in the front) and I wasn't a huge fan because it required me to reach back.

I normally keep the entire power on the unit off because I hate that little red light showing up when its not even on, but if its healthier for the machine to remain in that mode than powered completely off I might have to change my habits.

If you're using it often enough, it's actually not all that good for it to be turned off via the power switch in the back. Unless you're not playing it for a week or more at a time, putting it in standby (red light mode) is best if you worried about that sort of thing.

From what I read from Sony I believe it said not to power the PS3 off ever in the back until it is completely powered off in the front. I keep it off in the back when I am not using it, and personally I believe that's what should be done. I don't see a reason to keep it in standby power in the back.

Any reason some games that say they support 1080i and 1080p only display in 720p for me?

The game I am talking about is Prince of Persia. On the box it says it displays 720p, 1080i, and 1080p and I get 720p output. I tried other games real quick to make sure they were displaying in 1080p and they did (MGS and MK vs DC).

Try disabling 720p output in the Display settings of the XMB...

Since we're talking about resolutions here, if the highest my tv puts out is 720p and I'm using an hdmi cable - should I only check the 720p box and leave the 1080i and 1080p boxes unchecked?

What is the best way to handle your profile/trophies/game saves if you are going to be playing on multiple PS3s? I'm assuming you can just have your save games on a flash drive to take them from system to system, but what about your profile/trophies? Just make sure you sync them before you shut down the PS3 then log onto the other PS3 and they should carry over with your profile or ?

Yes, uncheck the other two. You want it outputing in your native resolution, not having the PS3 have to do a different resolution, interlace the output, and then have your TV reverse the process. If nothing else, it'll look better on the menu screens even is most games would default to 720p.

Syncing should be all you need to do before switching.

Does anyone know how to get items (text of websites) out of your PS3 Search History/Dictionary without removing the entire Dictionary (which I see is allowable in Settings)? Edit: Or does that option not remove the dictionary??

I have one of the 160gb models that I just got about three weeks ago and I was wondering why in the world the earlier versions of the PS3 were backwards compatible with PS2 games, but not the newer models.

The first PS3 models basically had PS2s (the CPU and Graphics Chip) in them. The later models had half the PS2 removed (I'm pretty sure the CPU was removed but they kept the Graphics Chip) to save costs. Those were still backwards compatible because they emulated the CPU. The newest models have had all the PS2 parts removed to save more money. They aren't backwards compatible because they haven't developed (or at least they haven't finished/released, as there are "videos showing a developmental firmware running a PS2 game on a non-Hardware BC PS3") a CPU and Graphics Chip emulator.

Someone has been looking at pr0n and doesn't want anyone else in the house to know.

Sorry...I know this post does not help, but I thought your situation was funny.

Is there a good way to organize media that's within the PS3 HD?

For example, I had a few seasons of Futurama and King of the Hill on an external HD that was hooked up to my PS3. When I look at the files that way, I can see them organized just as I have them organized on my external HD (they were organized by season, within each show's own folder).

But when I copied both to my PS3 HD, they all show up together. The default organization options are pretty much worthless.

Is there any way to make my own folders for media on the PS3 under the videos (or any) section?
Use the albums (under the video's information), then press square until it sorts them by album.
Hm.. no dice. It sorts all of them by date...and for some reason it puts the date as the album. I checked the actual files on my computer and they don't have an album listed. I guess I have to manually edit these files.

I don't get they don't just keep the same fucking folders... if it shows up that way in an external HD, why not do the same when it gets copied to the PS3's HD.:whistle2:?
Because the PS3 doesn't have a folder system. You have to set up albums manually to organize things more neatly.
Yeah, I figured.

But I found a work around... I just got a file renaming software and added "Futurama" to each episode, then the season, and then the episode #. This way, 4 of the 5 seasons are all organized well under the "F" (when organized alphabetically). Only one season is giving me problem so I have to organize that one manually. Not as neat but it works well enough.

Not very convenient but it's nice to a have system that has HT capacities for when there's nothing good on TV.:D
Settings > System Settings > System Information

It would be nice to have easier access to that info.
It also tells you when you download anything off PSN.

This probably doesn't deserve a new thread, so I'll ask it here.

Can anyone suggest good headphones for use with the ps3?

These are my preferences:

Wireless: Would be a plus
Stereo vs 5.1: I'd ideally choose 5.1, but if anyone can give me impressions on 5.1 vs stereo headphones, and whether or not 5.1 is worth it, that would be great. Most of the games I play are fighters, so I'm not sure how 5.1 would apply
Microphone: Also would be a plus
Sound quality: Decent to excellent would be preffered. Hopefully no background noise which is common in RF wireless headphones.
Price: sub-$100

If anyone can share any experience in this field, specifically of the Turtle Beach brand, that would be appreciated.

Lol! I got a BIG tv when i got my PS3, and one of my friends and I were having a conversation about hi-res porn, and he said he wanted to see how rough the ladies looked under magnification like that.

So we searched, and i forgot all about it- until a few months later when I pulled the browser up to look something up for my in-laws. Nice..

anyone know if there is a way to link 2 different psn id's to one user id for the ps3? I wanted it so i could be able to go onto different psn IDs without having to switch to another user on my ps3 since the game saves are also linked to user IDs. Yeah might seem pointless, but it would be convenient for me...
So were you able to fix the problem? ;)
No- i think i just casually mentioned that the dictionary was compiled of normal words and popular web searches (like google). No biggy.. (sorry for not having a useful response here)

There's gotta be some way to get searches out of the dictionary. I mean they do give the option for deleting the entire dictionary, which I would do, but I don't know if you can get it back or not.

The Delete Predictive Text Dictionary option only deletes the stuff that you added (or the system added for you). In other words, it reverts it back to the dictionary that came with the system when you pulled it out of the box.

I'm a relatively new owner of a PS3 and I was wondering if there is an easy way to find out how much space you have left on your hard drive.

From the XMB you Settings>System Settings>System Information

Is there an easy way to find out everything that's taking up room? I just got my system (160gb) and it says I have 115/149 remaining. Adding up everything it looks like I've only used about 10 with demos and installs so I'm a little confused.

Alright I've been having a series of inconsistent issues with my PS3 lately. It seemingly started with when I first installed Socom Confrontation soon after Christmas. I remember coming on this board constantly complaining about the bugginess and extreme unreliability of the game from teh fact that I could ALMOST never get a match to work, I would always get kicked out or something and I only ever got to see two or three of the game's several different maps. I later found out that the install data I had on my harddrive was corrupted, and that was causing the problem, not the game's server issues. So I re-installed and it's worked perfectly fine since.

I later tried to gameshare with somebody for ratchet and clank quest for booty. I downloaded the game then installed it, but when I tried to play it it came up with an error, and so I tried downloading it again, and from that point on whenever I tried to download it it would stop at an exact number at 98% the exact same way every time, no matter how many times I re-downloaded it, exactly the same. So I gave up.

A while after that, I downloaded Noby Noby Boy for my own account, and when I tried to start it up, the game would be loading at the introductory screen and then the PS3 would tell me to re-install the game because the data is corrupt. I did so, and the same problem occurred. I then restarted the PS3 and tried again, and it has worked perfectly since then.

Soon after, I gameshared with somebody for Flower. It had seemingly the exact same error as Noby Noby Boy but it wouldn't tell me my data was corrupt it would just freeze while loading at a black screen right before the first level loads. I restarted and re-installed. It worked...or so I thought. The first time I played the game, I didn't know what I was doing...I could see the grass, the hills, but I was apparently controlling a little speck that was extremely difficult to see, and I was seemingly trying to collect other specks that were also impossible to see in the grass...since I never played the game before I didn't know that this was not what the game was supposed to look like. I booted it up again later on and suddenly discovered the specks were supposed to be petals, since it was now working as it was supposed to. So I enjoyed being able to finally know what I was doing, but then the next level loaded and what the hell happened...suddenly the petals look like ruffles potato chips and look all scratchy and poorly rendered. I knew something was wrong with the save file. I completed the game this way, then deleted the game.

But the reason I'm finally trying to get some answers on this is because I picked up Killzone 2 yesterday, and now it keeps freezing at the exact same spot every time I try to progress in the game from my save...it happens right after you get in the buggy on the bridge, in the middle of a cut-scene, the game just stops moving, repeats the same sound effect, and sits that way forever and I have to shut off my system.

The disc has no scratches and has not been used for very long...I've thought about deleting my save files and game data and creating new ones but I wanna know if that will actually fix anything first...I wanna know if it could actually be something wrong with my system.

don't respond if it was tl;dr...

I didn't read every word, but my first thought is the hard drive might be failing.

So what's my solution? Does this mean buy a new harddrive or get the whole system repaired?

Well, you could try reformatting.
If that doesn't work and it's still under warranty, go that route, especially if you don't need a bigger drive.
Otherwise you could try another hard drive.

I didn't know there was an option to reformat the hard drive, and it's alright to use my ipod to backup my saves and stuff right?

Should be... I think I've heard of people using their iPod to make a backup.
