You mean as a media server? TVersity seems to be the best.

Personally, I have to directly transfer HD videos over to the ps3 in the proper format to get smooth playback, any other file (music and SD vids) though can be streamed fine.

Personally I use Windows Media Player 11. But some people have trouble getting that to work, so TVersity is a good alternative.

How do you go about directly transfering stuff to the PS3, and what format does it need to be in?
 
PS3mediaserver will stream most formats, only transcoding as needed (but this is done automatically, and only if needed). I do not have to worry about formats at all. If you can watch HD content on your PC, you will not have to worry about smooth playback using PS3MediaServer. I have two external 1 TB hard drives connected to my PC, both streaming content through to my PS3. It would be a nightmare if I had to transfer 8 GB movie files over to the PS3 every time I wanted to watch something.
 
Got it downloaded. It's way better than TVersity. Thanks for the recommendation. Now time to scope out some deals on a new HDD for my computer.

What if my PC isn't able to play HD stuff? It's kind of on the older side, probably from about 05, and I'd say just barely misses the cutoff for HD (no PCI-e port but i'd say average specs). Think I'll run into issues?

Also, do you know how to add thumbnails for folders you create? I like to have my stuff like this organized with cover art and everything attatched to the folder name.

Down load something that is HD, a television show that is rather small (around 1.2 GB) and try streaming it over to your PS3. Why guess when you can just try it out.

My folder structure is rather simple: My Videos, My Music, and My Photos. You do have to tell PS3MediaServer where to look.

All my music has cover art which Media Monkey uses - but since I stream most everything, I do not worry about cover art. If I am streaming music, or listening to Internet Radio I almost always turn off my plasma (to save electricity!). Long way of saying that I have no idea how to make thumbnails of anything. :)
 
If your computer is not powerful enough to transcode HD content on the fly, check out mkv2vob. Most HD content you find will be in the MKV format, which the PS3 doesn't natively support, but this program converts them so that they are playable. Not having to transcode the video while it is streaming (I imagine) would be less taxing on your PC so it should work even if you're using an older computer.

Well the way I add thumbnails to my music folders is to find the cover art (Amazon, Wikipedia, etc) and then save the image as folder.jpg, then I right click the image and check the box to hide it from view.

Now, one last question. Is anyone familiar with both PS3 streaming and Xbox Media Center? I used to use XBMC and transfer all my media files to the hard drive, but with my PS3 I can now do HD and not have to worry about storage space for my stuff. Now that I have this all set up, is there really any reason to keep my OG xbox around?

Unless I'm missing something, I might just think about getting rid of the xbox.

I just ask because it seems strange to me that people would stream video from their PC to their PS3. Any discs, I would just play on PS3 itself (obviously). I don't have anything I'd stream so not sure what you guys are streaming.
 
Digital movies you bought on Itunes or pirated videos are all I can think of. I'm assuming it would be easier to just use the PS3 web browser for sites like Hulu.
 
Okay, since this thread is 1/1 on helping me with my issues, I'm really hoping to make it 2/2 since this problem has been bugging me for the longest time.

Can someone help me get the optimal router settings for the PS3? I'm using a WGR614v7 Netgear router which the cable company gave us for free. It's kind of a POS, as I have trouble even getting my computer and my dads computer to work at the same time with it. But thats another issue for another day.

The PS3 is like literally 10 fucking feet from the router, and I get pretty much the worst lag imaginable in just about every online game. Killzone 2? Let's just say I have to shoot people in the head and hide for 3 seconds or else we end up killing each other. In the latest CAG multiplayer nights (GTA4 and COD WAW), the lag has just been intollerable.

What do I need to do? Will Port Forwarding solve my issues? I think I've looked into that before but I had no idea how to do it with my router. I could always do a straight wired connection, but once my room gets settled in upstairs the PS3 won't be so close to the router, so I'm looking to solve this issue before it seemingly gets worse. Thanks guys!

Just find your router and the program(s) you're trying to do it for and follow the steps.

I HAVE done the port forwarding for my PS3, but I still hear about my lag all the damn time on CAG GTA night.

For the record, I have a WRT54G router from Linksys.

Then again, I also have the lowest speed DSL connection available and I'm on a wireless signal.

Actually, my router is downstairs and I have a cordless phone in the same room as it, though I changed the channel on the router to a much higher one recently.

Of course, the router is also a used one which I got in trade for a $12 HD-DVD drive from Kmart when they were clearing them out.

Get rid of that router, get your internet connect next to the PS3 rather then the PC, get a D-link 655 router and plug your internetz into that.

Then plug the PS3 to the router wired so you get the full GIGABIT wired connection. Then install a Wireless-N card on your pc to connect with the 655. With this setup, you can stream anything possible to the ps3 without any issue at all. Ive sent 40MB blu-ray .ts files over wireless like this and it plays flawlessly with lossless audio. And of course do all the port forwarding stuff also.
 
When I try to log into the router I get

MILLER-1D32C2F1 (192.168.1.5) is managing this device

wtf? when I stream to my PS3 thats the name of my computer... not sure what IP address that is though? *sigh*

blitz - that seems like it would get costly quick.. the new router is probably a great idea but the wireless card(s) seem like they'd get expensive. I need one for my computer and one for my dads, so I'm not sure if thats really a cost effective alternative.

Also, howcome the ports for both that and the Playstation Network portforward link have mostly the same ports?

:edit: okay, it appears as if most of the games are the same? wtf? Socom Confrontation and CODWAW are the same exact thing. The Playstation network ports are the same but instead of 3478 - 3478 and 3479 - 3479 as seen above, the PSN port condenses it to 3478 - 3479. Other than that it's the same.

This is part of the reason I've never messed with this portforwarding stuff, it confuses the hell out of me.

Just do the Sony ones and you will be fine. Hell if you can stay connected and not lag around in Socom then you should be good to go for all games
 
I have that exact same router (well, it's an earlier version) and it works perfectly for anything I connect to it, as it's kind of a plug and play router for me. I'm not sure why it would be giving you trouble though.
 
Weird. I have the latest firmware and everything so I really wish I knew what was up. I'm going to check with all my games and what not with a port checker tool, so hopefully I'll get this problem solved ASAP.
 
Yeah, that's FANTASTIC (possible) news!

That's going to be huge for me. I would have standardized on the Playstation 3 had they not removed backwards compatibility, just as I standardized on the Playstation 2, not because it was the best (usually the worst version of a game) but because I needed it anyway to play my Playstation 1 games.

When they removed that, they removed any reason I had to standardize on it, but if they put it back for ALL systems they ever make, and it works pretty well, then I may well end up standardizing on PS3 after all.

I am hoping this is for all models and will support disc based games. not just downloads like the pspgo.

fuck that. Sony had better provide the software BC on the store, even if it's something like a $5 download or something, rather than have it for ONLY the downloadable PS2 titles.

I refuse to pay a second time to play games I already fuckin' own.
 
Yeah. They don't do that with PS1 stuff, so hopefully they won't with PS2 either. I mean they emulate the PS1 regardless of whether you own or rent, so hopefully it'll work the same.

(And AFAIK the PS1 emulation is supposed to be spot on, so hopefully...)
 
As far as I know you can transfer them between PS3s, PS2s, PS1s, and even PSPs (if the game exists for rent on the PSN).
 
Just a quick question:

Deleting "Game Data" has nothing to do with game saves, right? I only ask because I no longer own a few games, but some of their game data is still hogging up a ton of space on my HD (MGS4 I'm looking at you). As long as I don't delete my saves I should be good to go, right?
 
If I change my email that's linked to my PSN account all the trophies, online stats, etc remain the same right? Do the online stats stay the same for games that use their own stat tracking (like EA servers)? Would everything still be the same even if I shut down the previous email I was using?
 
I changed emails and it worked fine. For the EA servers I just changed the email for my master account and everything stayed the same.
 
HOW bad is flipping off the PS3 via the back switch as far as damaging anything goes? I just wonder since I was goofing around in GTA IV and messaging with a friend on PSN at the same time earlier and when I went to open their latest message all that came up was the lines above and below the message and nothing else. I waited for a good couple of minutes to see if it would resolve itself.

Thing is, I was able to quit out of GTA4, which I also thought would resolve the issue, but then the screen went COMPLETELY BLACK. Every time I tried to do a hard reset to bring about the 3 beep shutdown, pressing the reset button gave me the three beeps without shutting the PS3 down.

Is this a sign that my PS3 may be headed for the YLOD? If so, I hope to shit this happens before mid August, since I'm still covered under the 90 day warranty from the last time I sent it in.
 
My guess is that it would be okay in that situation as long as the HDD was not being accessed, and if the game froze I would think the HDD is not being accessed but I'm not sure. Anyone?

I certainly hope it was ok, since I'd hate to have to send it back to Sony again, though while it's under warranty it wouldn't be SO bad. But there's no way I'm going to pay $150 for repairs.
 
I have a 40gb, which was having some slow reading issues with games. I sent it in right @ the end of my one year factory warranty. I still have about a month on my service warranty.
 
I've had that happen to my PS3 on occassion as well. Anytime it freezes itself up, I just use the switch in the back. It happens about once or twice a month, but I haven't had any other issues with this PS3 besides that... so I doubt you're headed for the YLOD. Hope that helps calm your fears a bit.

Thanks. It most certainly does, since I don't have the $$$ to either pay for repairs if it's out of warranty or replace it with a different unit entirely.

I'm just glad that the system has been leaps and bounds more reliable than the 360, which I was initially considering since there's only really ONE game I want to play on the PS3 coming up in the future(God Of War 3). The rest of the games I had wanted for the PS3 almost all ended up on 360 too and sadly one of them(Frontlines: Fuel Of War) was scheduled for a PS3 release but it was cancelled.

If I have multiple psn accounts, how do you auto-login with one of those accounts? I don't want it to keep asking me which user to login as everytime I start the console.

I've got to agree with you on the reliability of the PS3. Personally, I would have rathered the X360 as a gaming system (due to the wider selection of games), but given the systems reliability issues, I figured I'd save myself the money and heartache in the long run and go with the PS3. I just wish they'd start releasing more games on a more frequent basis. Other than that, I'm very happy with my PS3.
