So yea a friend of mine is having a problem with his PS3. It's the first model 80GB I think...? Anyway he says it's freezing every time he sits down to play a game. Sometimes it's 20 minutes sometimes 40 but he can't play anymore without the whole system freezing up and he has to turn it off.

I'm not very savy and up to the minute with the PS3. I'm on my 5th 360 since launch  and it's my main system but I have a PS3 and a Wii as well... I googled PS3 freezing up and got a metric asston of hits about freezing problems. I followed a few suggestions there and had him update to the current firmware and check to make sure he didn't have and dirty vents or something blocking airflow because it's on a open tv stand and improper ventilation is not an issue.

Is this a widespread issue on the PS3? I noticed several people in the MW2 thread talking about game freezes. His are in all the games he's trying and not just one. Unlike me he babies his system as well. Always fully powers it down from the back when not being used and he doesn't even watch dvds/blurays in it because he doesnt want to wear out the laser or something. :D He has seperate players for that...

Thanks for any help/advice you can give us. I started to have him wrap it in a towel and see what happens... Always worked for my 360. :)

I had similar problems too. This was when I was playing uncharted 1 after my used PS3 40GB (from a bad person on Half.com) was returned because of faulty blu ray drive (it kept clicking loudly when a disc was put in). I saw with my controller it froze when playing the game and I would have to reset my PS3. I never knew if it was a hardware or software problem but currently it does not happen but it still makes me very confused. This happened when my controller could not sync when playing the game. It could have possibly been a software (firmware) problem but I cannot really tell you the main reason. Your friend is very particular about systems so I guess it might be more hardware related. I would say you might want to get the harddrive formated but I would see the link from NamPaehc first to see if that solves his problem.

He hadn't said anything for a couple days so I assumed it was ok... He fully updated his firmware and it froze. He did the factory firmware restore and it froze and he said he did a full reinstall and it still froze. Now he said he gets nothing but black screen but he can hear the system starting up through his tv speakers.

I told him to give up and call the 1800 number and see about getting it fixed. I called the 800 345 sony number just to make sure that was the number he needed and they even have a whole # option just for freezing so I guess it is a widespread problem.

I had the same problem. Only thing I could do to fix it was return it to sony. Only took 3 trips before they finally replaced it...

I have the same problem (freezing) and it is very annoying. Does the technique that Nam posted work? And does it delete anything from your HDD?

Not sure if it works... But no it doesn't delete anything. Though I think sometimes it might reset your background settings if you have a custom picture there.
