PS3 Game Case Size Comparisons

IGN got their PS3's in earlier today and they've been doing a bunch of tests (trying the Sixaxis on the PC, plugging in various USB devices, and other sorts of things) and I found this game case comparison between PSP, PS2, and PS3 cases interesting. I didn't think the cases would be that much different from the PS2 cases, but they're much smaller. It should be a nightmare for the anal collector CAGs. :lol:

I said it in the other thread and I'll say it again - I really don't think that clear/white strip at the top was necessary or adds ANY cosmetic value. It looks awful...
 
Well the clear/white will be blue for the Blu Movies which helps it stand out. I guess these are white as either being early releases or because they don't want them blue so people will know they are games.

Clear's much better than any other color that they could've chosen. It lets the cover be the focus and not that extra plastic above the cover.
 
a few points.

1. clear is stupid.

2. smaller is stupid.

DVD is the most popular format ever and now instead of using our same dvd storage cases we cant. The ps3 cases are smaller and wont fit correctly along side of our dvd collections that we have.

IMO this is just plain stupid on sonys part. YES we get it. BLURAY is different and "better" then DVD. They dont need to have a smaller case then a dvd case.
I dont like it at all.

Also the clear is just plain stupid. its unattractive,unappealing, and unimaginative. A blueish solid color would look much better or just let the cover of the game extend fully to the top since they are using the side to showcase the ps3 logo. And i agree it does look cheap. even if its 100% the same plastic as a dvd case. it just looks cheap with clear color.

I can only hope that this is not the final case design. And instead its just promo cases.

They are same size as the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD cases, so I think they are final.

It just looks like they were too stupid/lazy/uncreative to come up with a design for the last quarter inch. Those things look horrid. :cry:

The white strip at the top is absolutely necessary. I'm going to store all kinds of fun stuff in there. Broken pencils, peas, some paper clips. Extra blood for when the Great Reactioning occurs in 2021, etc.

I'm glad to know that everyone will be staring at the cases instead of playing the games.
 
They look really bad. Clear cases are bleh (Same with the Wii's White), but they are SMALLER then PSP cases! Damn!

To me, small means cheap. PS3 games are $60. They should have stuck with Blu-Rays Blue themed cases and just made them larger to show off the spine (Both Blu-Ray and HD use slimline cases)

By making them close to the same size as the failing PSP?
How about by making them too close to the PSP game case so people get confused when buying?
What about the fact that they all look like the Spiderman Font?

No, smaller. Blu-Ray and HD cases are the same size (the design is a bit different though) and PSP cases are a bit smaller then those. Aside from the clear aspect these will not blend in very well for those who wish to start a BR collection.

people think smaller = new (ipod nano, ds lite) With the samller case, people can tell right away it is the newest thing, with X360 it has the same old dvd case.
 
I like the packaging because it's different. Playstation 1 was CD cases, 2 was DVD cases, and now this is different again.

The 360 packaging is pretty dull, and I was hoping SOMEONE would do something different this generation. I think it really makes the games stand out, and kind of screams "this is different, this is better" compared with Wii and (especially) 360 games.

I'm too tired to make the "women prefer things bigger always" joke in a relatively unique or clever way, and I also don't want to pull out the joke that "haw haw the PS3 is so fucking big it must be like 1970s chic," but I guess I still fucking have to.

It's smaller than the 360 though. The main unit is slightly larger, but no external PSU.

Yea I think the first one is a joke and/or based on previous estimates or something.

Also, I'd rather the PSU be external. If it goes dead or something down the line, it's an easy replacement.

I like the fact that you are the one who started this topic about the PS3 game cases and when people start discussing them you are all: "LOLZ! I buy the gamez to play, not look at the case!!"

If you could care less about the cases than why start the topic?

The only 'positive' thing about smaller cases is that retail stores can stock more since they are smaller. Right now, thats a bad thing. With not a lot of variety between the games, these will be spread out showcasing all the crap launch games.

Don't even try to go there with small = new. You're obviously not going to be carrying you're PS3 around in you're pocket, so small cases for the games make no difference.

The PS3 case still makes me think that there was a three-way between the PSP Case, Blu-Ray, and Spider-Man.

Well, thats the system itself. George Foreman was contacted by Sony to give some of his "DNA" to make the PS3. I am just wondering how many steaks I can put on the thing.

I don't like the look at all. The clear plastic really does look cheap and I think a monotone plastic would've been better. But hey, if it serves the purpose then who cares what it looks like?

HD and BR cases are nearly identical (save for the color and some cosmetic differences)

Unless stores started stacking games vertically, there's not going to be any more room created by the shorter cases. They're pretty much the same width and thickness as the regular DVD cases.

So a 13" black and white TV is "newer" than a 60" plasma HDTV?
