I'm looking at upgrading my ps3 hd to a Western Digital 320 or 500gb drive. Everything that I've read talks about the need to format a the drive as a Fat32. I'm not sure if the back-up drive needs to be formatted this way as well, but I'm a Mac user and I was wondering if anyone has done an upgrade with a Mac and how the drive formatting worked.

Can the back-up be done with any usb drive off the shelf or does that need to be formatted as well?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Mac OS can read, write, and format any disk to FAT32 via Disk Utility.

What I would do instead is take out your PS3's drive and put that one in the external enclosure, put the new drive in, let the system format it, then copy your data from the old drive to the new.
