PS3 HD upgrade! Western Digital 320gb 5400 RPM $54 Update**Hitachi 320GB - < $42**

This is the deal I got in on a few days ago.. actually better now with a $5 off coupon:

http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=FZ2320BH

looks like the coupon code (SUNSHINE5) also gives you a free 2gb flash drive. good deal IMO.

$57.99 - $5.00 coupon = $52.99 with free shipping. I was going to get the Dell Western Digital deal but it was OOS when I checked, so this was the second best I could find. Newegg didn't have anything cheaper if I recall - something like a Toshiba 320gb for $59.99.

:whistle2:( Wish I had the money for this. The 320gb I have in there acts funny on startup (Correct Hard Drive Not Found) once in a while and I have to power cycle the system to get it going and I'd love to rip it out and use it as a straight backup for a new one.

Deals on stuff i ACTUALLY NEED happen after i buy something I didn't need or buy the same things for more money (and to late to return )

Dell SB has Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB 5400RPM 2.5" Laptop Serial ATA Hard Drive (OEM) for $80 - 10% off coupon FCZZ90DNZ2BX1N = $72 with free shipping. Next best on Google Products is $93 including shipping.

Copied from SlickDeals. The above is a lot better of a deal. I bought mine 2 days ago on Newegg for $95... I kinda wanna smash something into the ground.

I had picked one up a while ago. The Once I got it reformatted and setup to the right format I realized that I would have to redownload all the demos and stuff and with the slow downloads I was too disgusted and put the original on back in. It would have been really nce if you could clone the original.

Although recently the downloading seem to get better. So I might retry it.

how hard is it, to replace the PS3 hard drive?
also, how do you transfer the data?

thanks in advance for any advice

Um...you can. There is a backup feature on the PS3. Backup the current HDD to an external and then put the new HDD in and restore the backup...

It's very simple. There's a panel on the side of the PS3 that you unscrew. If you still have the instruction manual around, it's actually detailed in step-by-step instructions, or I'm sure they're floating around in PDF format somewhere (Edit: Straight from Sony)

As for data transfer, it seems somewhat roundabout I suppose, but I used the backup data option by plugging one of my external hard drives into the PS3, and then restored said data when I installed my new hard drive. Here is a link about PS3 backup and restoring. And here is a handy walkthrough by CNet, complete with data copying and HD installation.

That is what I hate about upgrading. You will need some high capacity memory or HD and a new HD to install. After that, you end up with a drive you don't really need and could've used to back up the stuff in the first place lol. I upgraded after a couple of weeks having the ps3 and I didn't really have anything to back up. Now I can use the 60GB I have leftover to help my friends upgrade (if they ever do).

Here is the basic step-by-step procedure.

1. Plug in external HDD formated in FAT32 equal or bigger than your used HDD space.

2. Goto System Settings->Backup Utility, then backup onto said drive.

3. Turn off/unplug PS3, pop off HDD bay cover, unscrew plug screw, slide HDD back then out. Swap HDDs.

4. Put new drive in PS3, turn everything back on, let the new drive be formatted automatically and plug in external drive.

5. Goto System Settings->Backup Utility, RESTORE backup off external.

6. Win.

EDIT: In place of an external drive, you could do what Saix_XIII says below, but I personally like having my original HDD as it was when I took it out of my PS3 in case something fucks up with the drive or the backup.

Not true really. I made a backup with no prior external HDD. It took some more work, but it was not a problem.

1. Get an external 2.5" SATA to USB enclosure
2. Put the NEW drive (that's going into the PS3) into the enclosure
3. Back up your current PS3 HDD to the external
4. Copy the backup to your PC
5. Swap the PS3 drive with the external (new) drive (so now the PS3 drive is the external and the external is the PS3 drive).
6. Place backup on to the new external drive (old PS3 drive)
7. Restore backup to new PS3 drive

I now have a 80GB external and a 250GB PS3 drive.

I just switched my ps3 HDD with my macbook 120gb. Not bad for free seeing I haven't used my old macbook in over a year.

I'd say just take your laptop HDD and upgrade that to 320gb. Do you really need that much room on a ps3, maybe on your laptop but not your PS3, be reasonable.

What's funny is that I have a ton of HDD space on my PC that I'll never use, but I can see my 320 filling up in my PS3. You'll lose so much for system purposes, then if you download a lot from the store (full games and demos).. install any of the games that have it as an option, copy 20gb of music to the hdd, ect.. it adds up. I think I'll max out sometime next year and I'll have to actually delete demos I never play or game data from discs I don't own anymore. But it's nice to not worry about it for years at a time.

Back in the PS2 era, Western Digital brand 3.5 drives were an odd size that required modifying your system to fit them in. Are the Western Digital brand 2.5 drives a standard size that will fit in a PS3 without issue?

Great idea, I knew there was some better way to do it.

They work flawlessly.

The PS3 has a SATA-150 controller, check if your drive has jumpers configured for SATA-300. Most drives automatically bump down to SATA I if the controller doesn't support SATA II but if you can force the setting that might clear up that issue.

Are these retail or OEM?

Also if you delete all the game data and downloads(All the stuff thats easily recovered) you can backup your ps3 on a 2gb thumb drive....
