wow, checked the in store avalibility thing and every store within 200 miles of me has them in stock, with most stores listed at 4+.

yeah. i posted msrp price for ps3. i hope someone post some deal of ps3 that is lower than the msrp. i am hopping to get on soon. but the 600.00 price point scare me away.

I bought a 60gb at Target last night, played it until 1am, then returned it this morning after having a major attack of buyer's remorse.

The CONS (you've seen these all before):
1. Backward compatibility sucked big time. I had heard as much but had to see it for myself. Okami looked terrible on my HDTV.
2. No rumble. I didn't realize how much I like rumble until it was no longer there. Playing the GT HD demo felt weird without it.
3. Expen$ive as hell.
4. No support yet for DDR, etc. controllers. Even once support comes, see gripe #1.

The PROS:
1. GT HD demo was astounding. I was floored.
2. Free online.
3. I actually liked the UI better than the 360's. I think I am in the minority on this.

Those PROs don't rate $600, and I don't care about Blue-Ray, so back to the store it went. Fortunately, Target didn't hassle me about the open box.

I bought myself GH2 as a consolation prize. Can't wait to get home from work and rock out!

My local target just had 4 60 gig in stock. The've had some in stock each time I've been in there the past 3 weeks. Guess no one's buying now.

Strangely, in my area none of the major stores have them in stock. I went to several Circuit Citys and Best BUys and none had them. Went to an EB Games last night and got the last one they had because I had some extra money to waste. We'll see in a few months if it was worth it. I already have the 360, but for some reason the Wii just hasn't convinced me. The only game I want to play on the system is Zelda, and I have it for cube.

That might be true, but I know for a fact that many places are getting them in very regularly. My local Best Buy had only 1 system a few days ago and I went yesterday and they and 6 or 8. Similar situation with Target. I think the speed with which the systems are coming in (compared with how rare they were just after launch, in particular) is giving people the impression that the same units are just sitting there.

what i find weird is that every store in 200 miles if me has 60gigs in stock, most +4, but only like 8 out of 200 have 20gig, and none of them are listed as getting more in stock. is that their nice way of making us spend $100 extra? honesly, everything i need is in the 20 gig version, why force me to spend $100 on extra stuff i don't need?

everyone else please compare and see if thats the case in your area.

There have been many rumors that Sony is aiming to phase out the $499 version... who knows if it might actually come true.

Well, I think it's common knowledge that Sony is producing a lot more of the 60GB version. They lose less money on that model. But yeah, the 20GB model is the better buy as long as you don't absolutely need wireless. This is the first I've heard of a rumor that they might discontinue the 20GB version.

i hope not. if thats so, then theres no way i'm going to get one for the next year or so when the prices drop considerably, if ever. to be honest, i'm more interested in the HD movies than most of the games they're putting out. sure i'd like to play motorstorm and MGS4, but when i can get practically everything else on the system on my 360 with a controller i like more and the superior xbox live online experience, why bother?

wait the BC is terrible because Okami didnt look good on your HDTV? Did it look any better on the HDTV with a PS2? because i would image it would still be stretched out.

The PS3 has some kind of glitch/error where PS2 games look worse running on the PS3 than they do on the PS2; if you google it, you might be able to find some shots comparing the two. I can personally see the difference on my systems quite easily... Supposedly, it's possible for it to be fixed with a firmware update, though as of right now, Sony has refused to even acknowledge the problem. If you check on any PS3 forums (IGN, Gamespot, official Sony ones), you'll see that people have been gripping about the problem since the system released.... along the DVD and Blu-Ray upscaling/downscaling problems.

Every store I go into has at least a half dozen. Local best buy had 60 on the floor last week and still 20 or so this week.

is this only with PS2 games or is it with PS1 games as well?

as for as the upscaling and downscaling, is that the HDMI security and compatability issue with it not going above 540p? cause that's a bigger issue than just the PS3 i think (and kind of over my head, almost makes me just want to use component cables from the sound of it).

It's with PS1 and PS2 games (although not ones that support progressive scan). However, I just played Okami on my PS3 and I really don't think it's bad at all. You get some jaggies, but that happens on a PS2 when you play on an HDTV with component cables.

could this issue (much like the upscaling one) perhaps only be present in HDMI usage, and if component is use the glitch is not present?

plus component can outpout at 720p and 1080i cant it? that aint no 1080p but i'd settle for that until they fix the glitch.

I play it in 4:3 (normal) ratio, I don't stretch it.

On the PS2, Okami looks great on my HDTV. I'm using component cables.

On the PS3, it looks like crap, even in 4:3 and even when I set the PS3 to only output 480i. This is using component cables also.

I see a HUGE difference between Okami on the PS2 via component cables and Okami on the PS3 using the same component cables.

I don't even consider myself that picky about this kind of stuff, either.
Okami looks fine on my :ps3: .. are you playing in Progressive Scan?
It looks bad regardless of the output. If I do progressive, it looks bad. If I do 480i (to match the native output of the game since it doesn't support progressive), it still looks bad.

Bear in mind, it looks great on my TV with the PS2 using the exact same component cables.

Also, it wasn't just Okami. I was using it as an example.
What is the difference you see, exactly?
Way more jaggies and an overall fuzziness that wasn't present before. Text is harder to read.

I decided last week that I would bite the bullet and get a ps3. I went to every major retailer in my area (Target, Best Buy, Circuit City) and all were out of stock. On Friday, went to an EB Games down the street and I asked the clerk if they had any and he said they did, so I bought it. Probably didn't need it since I just got a 360, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I really do not think the PS3 will fail. It maybe starting off slow, but things should pick up. If not, I guess I wasted my money. Unlike most people, the system that doesn't interest me is the Wii. The only game I want for it is Zelda, and I already have it for GC. The only game in the future I'd like to play is Mario Galaxy

It could be a difference between our TVs, or in how we perceive things, but I found Okami to be quite good. I could detect a little of the jagginess in places, but not so much that I would rather play it on a PS2. The issue with backwards compatibility is certainly real and I hope Sony can do something about it, but so far it hasn't kept me from playing PS2 games.
isn't PS3 availability pretty high nowadays?
Yes, the title should be changed to PS3 in stock everywhere you go.

What amazes me is the places selling out of these. I mean I HOPE the people buying are doing so as Blu-Ray buyers otherwise as gamers they're a disgrace since they're following the PS3 like a puppy with the shitty games showing mostly plus the fact they're overpriced as are all 360 games when they debut.
I'm sorry but buying a PS3 at this stage as a gamer says "I'll take any shit you dish out at me Sony! I love you Ken Kutaragi!!!!!!!!!!". I'm sorry i but that's the way I feel.
Also this potentially validates there's an idiot audience out there that will buy anything with the Playstation name on it or rather that this Christmas didn't dwindle them. I wonder how many mindless Sony fans are out there, just waiting to save up enough money for a $500 or $600 system.

Don't be an ass. People are buying the PS3 for the same reason people buy ANY system just after launch -- for its future potential.

Icruise part of the reason I have such a problem is the arrogance Sony has with their Playstation brand thinking they can configure it any such way and people will buy it. Hearing these tales of it still selling out at this price validates it or a lot of people wanting Blu-Ray are looking for the cheapest player out there.

How were you able to return it? People are allowed to return opened systems just because they didn't like them?

I can't deny that there was some arrogance on the part of Sony (some of those Kutaragi quotes in particular are stupid as hell), but I have a problem with the idea that they are charging way more than the PS3 is worth, or that the PS3 is overpriced compared to the Xbox 360. In fact, I wrote a blog entry on the subject not long ago. This idea that PS3 buyers are morons who will buy anything with the Playstation name on it is particularly insulting.

I don't know what the deal is, but every time a new console comes out, there's a concerted effort by a few (or more than a few, depending on the console) to justify their purchase of rival console(s). Truly it serves no good purpose to argue over it... if it's not one's cup of tea, we can appreciate that. But hyperbole, misrepresentation, and outright falsehoods only serve to reinforce an opposite opinion. Thus proving the other person's point for them.... :)

I own both consoles (and soon to be a third when the Wii colors come out...) and I don't think either purchase was regrettable. Why? Because I bought them for the games to play... not to have the "best" or the "most powerful"... I don't believe the marketing departments of either Microsoft or Sony. But if they can make good games for their systems, they can tell me each one makes toast for all I care. :)

And besides... everyone knows the adage: "Arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics... You may win, but you're still a retard..."
How were you able to return it? People are allowed to return opened systems just because they didn't like them?
I think it depends on the stores return policy. I bought a 20 GB the day after christmas at Circuit City. I wanted the 60 GB but they were out. When I purchased it they said you have thirty days to return it or upgrade to the 60 GB PS3. I thought to myself wow thats pretty dam cool. Well two days ago I took it back to CC and got a full refund because it was within the thirty day time frame. Initially I was going to upgrade to the 60 GB but after having it for almost a month I realized that there just aren't enough unique titles on the PS3 that warrants keeping it for now and that playing my 360 will more than due for the time being. I do like the PS3 but right now there just isn't enough for me on the system that differentiates it from the 360. I'm sure I'll get one down the road though because I'm a junkie.

Sony is the king of hardware!
Shoddy hardware!:applause:
Just a warning, don't rent dvds or games and play them on your PS3 unless you want to greatly increase the chances of a broken system.

i was wondering if most of the people that had issues were even running at the max resolution with ps2 games, i'm assuming there's no point in not doing it if you're able to do so.
