Resistance: Fall of Man - IGN - 9.1
Closing Comments
But let's be honest, Resistance doesn't have to be perfect to be fun, and fun is exactly what it is. From start to finish, Fall of Man is one hell of an outstanding roller coaster ride that every last PS3 owner needs for day one. Epic boss battles (the final few are crazy!), ever-changing scenery, addictive weaponry, and a unique thematic are just a few of the reasons Resistance stands out. But above all else, it's the multiplayer elements that truly ascend this one to the next level. It's a must have for sure.

Resistance: Fall of Man - Gamespot - 8.6
Resistance is an exciting action game that successfully combines many of the best qualities from other great first-person shooters with its own spectacular visuals and a few novel twists.
The Good: Rock-solid design borrows the best aspects from the best first-person shooters; outstanding presentation, featuring great weapons and believable environments; replayable campaign pits you against an aggressive, fairly intelligent foe; fully featured multiplayer mode offers good variety and supports up to 40 players.
The Bad: Derivative visual style and gameplay is well crafted but mostly unoriginal; the campaign's story and characters aren't well developed; two-player cooperative mode isn't available online.

Resistance: Fall of Man - 8.5 - 1UP
For now, Resistance falls a little short of being the hoped-for "Halo-killer," but with a package that would be considered complete by any standards, it delivers a launch classic, and it lives up to its billing as the PS3's killer app.

Ridge Racer 7 - IGN - 8.2
Closing Comments
While not a revolution, Ridge Racer 7 takes the long-running series forward. It keeps the larger-than-life race dynamic that fans have come to love and adds a rewarding customization option. An even bigger enhancement deals strictly with online functionality. Would-be drivers will feel like members of a global race community, complete with constantly updating race statistics and personal achievements. A nice selection of tracks, tunes and rides round out this very solid package.

Call of Duty 3 - Gamespot - 8.2
Though it plays like many other WWII-based first-person shooters, Call of Duty 3 is a great game with top-notch production values.
The Good: Gorgeous visuals; amazing sound; 24-player online play; feels just like you're a small part of a huge war.
The Bad: Single-player campaign doesn't play much differently than Call of Duty 2; story isn't particularly engaging; inconsistent frame rate.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 - IGN - 7.0
Closing Comments
Tony Hawk's Project 8 is an interesting game in that while it introduces a number of new and fun concepts, like Nail a Trick and Spot Challenges, much of it feels very rehashed. In fact, some areas of the game are even taken from past games in the series, making the package feel somewhat lazy. That's not to say that Tony doesn't have any stamina left in his legs, as the game is still plenty fun most of the time, but we've seen it all before. It's certainly disappointing that the PlayStation 3 is so far behind the Xbox 360 game. Framerate issues are apparent at every other turn, and the lack of online play really hurts. Project 8 is a worthy game to pick up, just preferably not on this system.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 - Gamespot - 7.3
Project 8 makes a lot of changes that will please fans of the series, but some technical issues and missing features hurt the experience.
The Good: Redesigned career mode gives you multiple levels of challenge; nail the trick mode is a cool-looking addition that has a positive impact on the gameplay.
The Bad: Frame rate is frequently unstable; no online support; skater creation options aren't as in-depth as they have been in previous installments.

Genji: Days of the Blade - 1UP - 6.0
Ultimately, Genji isn't a bad game at all. Sony delivers a completely acceptable action-adventure game that will appeal to a lot of people -- the established Onimusha formula (itself a second cousin to Resident Evil) makes for a good low-impact launch showcase. Still, it's a shame that Sony missed a few key opportunities with this title. The multicharacter concept could have allowed for co-op (or even online) play for up to four players, as a mundane brawler like this transforms into something far more compelling when you're busting heads alongside pals. Similarly, the developers failed to properly capitalize on the Sixaxis controller's unique functionality: You can dodge by quickly jerking the controller to the side, but the same move is more effectively activated by merely moving the right analog stick. This lack of ambition keeps Genji from achieving any enduring success...it'll suffice for launch-time thrills, but likely won't linger long in your mind.

Genji: Days of the Blade - Gamespot - 6.4
While this action adventure game flexes a bit of the PlayStation 3's graphical muscle with its mythical Japanese scenery, its rather shallow, derivative gameplay makes it difficult to recommend.
The Good: Great graphics and sound show off some of what the PlayStation 3 can do; four considerably different playable characters plus multiple unique weapons; some exciting boss battles and other impressive set pieces.
The Bad: Level design is often dull, and sometimes frustrating and confusing; repetitive hack-and-slash combat rarely demands much skill or finesse; some noticeable cut corners throughout the story make the game feel rushed.

Genji: Days of the Blade - IGN - 6.0
Closing Comments
While gorgeous, Days of the Blade hardly lets gamers “play beyond”, as it were. The additional characters and weapons certainly help, as does the flexible combat system. The game also offers amazing vistas and epic boss fights. Regardless of how someone dresses a corpse, though, it’s still a corpse. And that’s the main problem here. Beneath the gleaming surface lies an old heart that’s just about had it. Days of the Blade gets half the formula right. Sadly, it’s the wrong half. In the end, fans of the original should take a look, but anyone looking for a true next-generation action title will need to wait.

NBA '07 - IGN - 7.8
Closing Comments
NBA 07 could've remained a simple port of the current gen version, but instead, it chose to improve on a number of game features. Game AI is stronger, the shooting mechanic is tighter, and the NBA Replay feature is one of the best modes included in a sports game in some time. Unfortunately, the game is held back from greatness with some SIXAXIS control issues, bugs and a lack of unlockable content and modes. Sony's first party basketball title made a huge leap forward in making the jump to the PS3, which bodes well for future games in the series.

NHL 2K7 - IGN - 8.6
Closing Comments
NHL 2K7 on the PlayStation 3 is a great hockey game through and through. Its feeling of motion and controls are top-notch, and its franchise mode is the one to beat. The SIXAXIS control features are fantastic, though the visuals and menus should be touched up a bit to make for a complete next-gen experience. If you're into hockey, don't pass this up.

Seems they just complained about the same things they complained about in the first game. It is the second game in a series, of course it is going to be similar.

What's wrong with that, if the game in your six hundred dollar system still has the same flaws as the previous game, which $10 at Best Buy?

I figured real time weapons changing would warrant no lower than a 6.5, and being an IGN review, no lower than a 7.

I hope you see what I did there.

i'd still hit it

I thought the first was solid. If this is more of the same, I'm happy with that. I wouldn't pick it up for more than $10 though.

Poor Genji. You're apparently a historically accurate piece of shit. A 6 from IGN is like a 4 from everywhere else.

I don't know if I trust the reviewer. I mean, have you seen all of the next-gen features that they packed into this badboy, like real-time weapon change?

This is not a knock on the PS3 but:

I really can't imagine what games look appealing at launch. I've watched the videos...its all kind of meh.

I think it depends if you have an X360. I won't be getting a PS3 at launch, but then I don't have a X360, either. So games like NBA 2K7, Oblivion, Resistance, Motorstorm, etc. all look kinf od fun to me. How many will actually turn out to be so? I'm not sure, but it's certainly a decent enough looking launch in that respect. Now, you are correct if you own an X360, I can't imagine such a person caring about the PS3 launch at the moment. Six months down the road? More likely.
IGN is the Fox News of gaming.
Well, except I trust them on this one.

And I liked the first game, for $10.
A 6?

While these scores suck... lets be honest, Resistance and CoD3 are probably the two games that'll carry the launch.

And the only PS3-exclusive launch title that looks worth anything is Resistance, but that's hardly worth shelling out $600+ for. I'll definitely get a PS3 eventually, but I'm really starting to wonder if there's any point in getting one at launch, especially since they'll be so hard to get.

Very expected. Nothing out of the ordinary, and nothing from Genji jumped out as a change or improvement from the original.

Hopefully some of the other games get strong reviews. I'm anticipating the Full Auto 2 review to be a strong leap and bound above the original's (one could certainly EXPECT).

wha...WAIT WAIT WAIT

THE PS3 DOESN'T LOOK GOOD TO YOU?!!

NO WAI

You can add a 9/10 for R:FoM from OPM:

This is the game Sony's been talking about, the flagship first-party title for the launch of the PS3. This is the game that's intended to usher in the "HD Era," the marquee title for the new system. This is the game everyone's looking at to set the tone for the PS3. Of course, it's not at all fair to lay this heavy a trip on a single game--but fair or not, Resistance is the first-party game Sony's pushing the hardest for launch, and that means it has a great deal to live up to. Now the question is: Can it bear the weight of all these heavy expectations?

The answer is a reasonably solid "yes." But before I go into detail, let me tell you what Resistance isn't. It's not the greatest first-person shooter ever devised, nor is it a revolutionary leap forward in technology. Its graphics won't make your brain explode, nor will they make you think you're living in the fourth dimension.

What Resistance is, though, is a really excellent, story-driven FPS. It's a marked step forward in the genre, bringing together elements from some of the best shooters on the market, infusing them with Insomniac's insane ability to craft unconventional weapons, and wrapping them up in a beautifully presented package.
...

The bottom line is that Resistance is a truly excellent FPS, rich in variety, atmosphere, and sheer entertainment. With a launch game this good, I can only imagine what untapped power lurks in the PS3's innards.

Verdict: A supremely competent shooter that excels at top-level design. A few minor flaws hurt the overall score (no online co-op, lack of chimera variety, etc), but not much.

Score: 9|10

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they probably didn't even try to figure out the Kamui attacks. I thought the first game was kinda "meh" until I figured those out. Increased the fun by a factor of 10x! I'm still going to get it at launch.

In my opinion, it's the Japanese-made games like this one and the Final Fantasy series that really make Playstation a more appealing brand name.

Your stupidity knows no bounds.

Resistance looks really good just by looking at the screenies. However, I don't think I can drop $600+ quite yet, for one game no less.

I said it before,

Your the Kevin Federline of CAG.

Except you didn't nail Britany or get any money out of her. Your just that dumb and white trashy.

Good to hear Resistance seems to be solid...now if I can just find someone on campus who will have a ps3 (can't afford one right now)

Sounded like they were going to give Resistance a good score from reading their preview that is posted in another thread.

I'm definatley getting it when I get my PS3.

And for people who doubt the multiplayer:
we were consistently able to enjoy 30-40 player games with no noticeable lag whatsoever (Insomniac did a fantastic job of hiding what little latency there appears to be).
I know they say there was barely any lag, but wouldn't that change once the systems are acutally in peoples houses? I could be wrong, but was just wondering.

while obviously there is the possiblity for lag when there are other sources, I think that this shows that the lag problem isn't from the game itself (i.e. Call of Duty 2 on 360). This is all a developer can do. I think that since it is required to have broadband to play, it shouldn't be too bad.
Wait, 8.5 is a killer app?
That's what I thought, it be different if they called it a good game...but a killer app?
Wait, 8.5 is a killer app?
Maybe in this next generation "killer app" is not the top. Maybe we'll have "mass-murdering apps" or "serial-killer apps" and what we all previously had called "maming apps" will now assume the "killer app" title?

Maybe there will be a scale. Resistance might be a killer app while Metal Gear -Solid 4 will be a Charles Manson-app. Devil May Cry 4 will be a Ted Bundy-app and don't forget the unforgettable Pol Pot-app Virtua Fighter 5.

Resistance seems to be a very good launch title. I'm sure people will love it to death but we'll look back five years from now and go, meh.
