PS3 Linux. Holy crap.

Chuplayer

CAGiversary!
I'm a Linux n00b. Help me any way you can. About the only requirement is that it must be a Linux distro that's burnable to CD, not DVD. I don't have a DVD burner. Oh, and I can only do 480i. I can do both fullscreen and widescreen 480i.

I already installed xubuntu 7.10 on my PS3, but nothing of interest works. I can't even use my wired internet connection. It can't find the PS3's ethernet card. The included video player closes as soon as I open it. I think since I'm running on 480i, I'm missing some options in the bottoms of windows. If there's some way to shrink everything down, that would be cool.

The thing even managed to divide by zero and crash at some point. WTF?

I'm currently downloading xubuntu 8.10 for PS3. Somebody said that it's leaps and bounds better than 7.10. I hope so.

where did you get the download from?

There was place where I used to go so that I could get all my Linux help, because I was wanting to put linux on my system and there was a lot of questions answered on this site. Its been so long that I can't remember the site. But it was so good in helping to find the right drivers for whatever version of linux that you had installed on the system. That's really what the problem is, you need drivers so that in xubuntu you can get internet. However, that problem should have been the first thing that they fixed in 8.10.

The last one, http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/ports/releases/8.10/release/ The first two, doesn't matter.

It looks like the 8.10 installer itself recognized both the wired and wireless networking devices in the PS3, so the OS better recognize them, too. This one is still installing. It's on what I hear is the usual 6% hang in installation that does work through if you give it time.

Okay, 8.10 is already working out better for me. Things act less broken overall. I still think the worst setback, though, is going to be 480i. If anybody can help me with that or anything else, please do so!

Ubuntu is supposed to be at 720p.... unless of course your TV goes only 1080i, then that could be the issue.

480i. That's it. I can do widescreen 480i, and I would if I knew how, but right now I don't.
you could check out http://psubuntu.com/

I got it working fine using gentoo. I'm a pretty big linux person, so let me know if you have any other general linux questions.
General linux? Uh, there's installing stuff. I read somewhere that it's best to get the source code for whatever you want and let it compile on the PS3 so it's built for the PS3 and therefore runs better. I have no idea what sort of command line terminal stuff you should do for that.

More specific to the PS3 I think, the black bars all around the usable work area when running linux. I don't want to just "blow up" my image. I want to use that space.

It looks like the PS3 linux is going to be limited no matter what I do, and 480i isn't helping things any, so I'm not expecting to do very much with it. Getting accustomed to it and learning a little bit about it is my main objective now.

you can install it on an SD tv but you will not get the GUI
so its takes a little more time because everything is done through command prompt type setup

^^^that was my experience with it when the first version of linux was released on ps3 not sure it you still have to do that ^^^^

You get the GUI with xubuntu. 8.10 has a weird glitch with Thunar, the file manager, so you need to use PCMan.

The experience will SUCK in 480i. Unless you're only watching videos or something. No easy way around that.

What version? How long did it take to compile?

Re: Jest, which version? uhm not sure what version of gentoo I'm running. it took a long time to compile stuff. I used this tutorial, which let me start from a later stage. http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/cell/wiki/InstallGentooOnPS3

Re: Chuplayer, if you want to compile everything for the PS3, then you shouldn't be using ubuntu. the big advantage of a distro like ubuntu is that most of the packages are precompiled. You can look at the command line tools like apt-get or aptitude for installing stuff. If you wan tto have a basic gui, look at synaptic.

Very little of that makes sense to me, but it's a start!

well, it's an app that helps you install new things. open up a terminal and type in the command "synaptic" without the quotes.

Install yellow dog linux 6.

It has a build specifically for the PS3 cell.

The wirelles internet, bluetooth, everything works right out of the box. So it's very little hassle.

I am downloading YDL 6.0 right now. It is going to take about 6 more hours though (I have a terrible connection). Hopefully I can get it set up and running..

Oh and I also have a question. I am trying to prepare my PS3 by formatting the HDD but I'm not sure how to allocate it. I know you can only do 10 GB to one OS and the rest of the space has to go to the other (I have a 160 GB HDD). If I only give the PS3 OS the 10 GB , does that mean I can only have that much space to store saves, demos , etc ? Any help with partitioning would be greatly apprecaited.

The partitioning options suck--they seem like they were only considering the 20GB launch model. I wish they would let you specify the partition size, or at least do a 50/50 split.

10GB is plenty for Linux--I think a reasonable install of YDL is about 1GB (maybe a little more). If you're planning to keep using the PS3 as a game/media machine, it's pretty much the only way to go.

BTW, YDL 6.1 is out now, that would probably be a better thing to install than 6.0, but you could always do a yum upgrade if you've already burned the DVD.

My situation is this. I have encoded a ton of my DVDs to Mp4s. Unfortunately the PS3 won't read them if I just put them on a flash drive or something (some of the settings must be wrong). I wanted to put them in Linux and watch them that way. I also want to run emulators through Linux. I am thinking this will take up more than 10 GB but if the PS3 OS only has 10 GB won't that limit what the PS3 can do as well?

Do you still have an mp4 on a flash drive? If so, try putting your flash drive in your PS3 right now, go to video/movies/whatever, highlight the flash drive, and press triangle. If you see an option called "view all files" select it. You might be able to access your mp4s that way.

Anyway, I've put PS3 Linux on hold for now. In addition to other things going on, it's really a bad idea to do this on an SDTV.

like people have said above if you want to keep using the ps3 as a game machine you probably want to give linux the 10 gb.

Ok thanks guys. I thought of a solution that may work for me as well. If I only give Linux 10 GB, would the PS3 recognize my 500 GB Ibook? If so I could just load up my videos from that.

Well I got YDL 6.1 installed and it seems to be working ok. I am actually typing this message from it. Unfortunately it isn't the fastest OS in the world (probably limited by the PS3) and I can't get any flash players to work. I downloaded some codecs but when I load up my MP4's in VLC, it usually starts to slow down and eventually I have to just reboot. I know the PS3 isn't meant to be used as a computer anyway but this is pretty neat to mess around with...
